(This is not satire – believe it or not)
Could David Cameron’s problems with his rebellious backbenchers be related to the fact that the Tory party is disproportionally made up of toffs?
Research has shown that people from an upper-class background are more likely to cheat, betray their country or friends and defect from a political party.
A series of studies by scholars from UC Berkeley into the relationship between socio-economic class and prosocial and antisocial emotions and behaviours, reveals that upper-class people are more likely to behave unethically:
Upper class people more likely to cheat: study
And an historical study by political historian Dr Alun Wyburn-Powell into more than a hundred defections in and out of the Liberal and Liberal Democratic Parties over the course of a century showed clearly that on average defectors were more likely to be from privileged and wealthier backgrounds than loyalists:
This evidence of upper-class disloyalty to parties and causes is also supported by the revelation that the upper classes were more likely than average citizens to be prepared to betray their country in the run up to the Second World War.
A list of suspected UK traitors to be interned drawn up by the UK government in 1941 included numerous members of the aristocracy, including the Duke of Bedford, Adml Sir Barry Domville, Sir Oswald Mosley (of course) as well as close friends of the Marquess of Salisbury, Lord Rothermere (owner of the Daily Mail) and members of the royal family particularly the Duke and Duchess of Windsor:
Nobles and admirals on war ‘Suspect List’
On the basis that upper-class people seem to be a bunch of cheating, disloyal, self-interested traitors who would betray their friends, principles and country at the drop of a hat – seems to me the Tory Party would do well to reconsider its traditional reliance on support from upper-classes and the wealthy.
Don’t you?

My experience suggests that wealthy people ( particularly with inherited wealth) have very little loyalty outside of their own immediate circle, or family (often one and the same).
That is not to suggest the opposite, that all poor people are scrupulously honest, but the demographic is pretty vague at best. However, there would be an obvious trend for the toffs to favour ‘breeding’ writ large on a CV rather than meritocratic talent. How else did caMoron secure himself a nice little earner, a post for which he has absolutely no qualifications?
Well he is a liar and a cheat, and totally bereft of feeling towards mankind (that demographic does not include his own self, so he is certainly qualified for leading the Toff Party), but he has demonstrably no skill at running a country.
But he is wealthy, has ‘ties’ and is a malleable pawn for the use of the banksters. What’s not to loathe?

This government has tried it’s hardest to divide and conquer the working class and new labour didn’t do a bad job either, but thankfully the working class are made of sterner stuff than that, we may disagree with one another but hopefully draw the line at the amount of backstabbing that goes on the upper echelons of society.

As a working class man I’d like to agree with the findings of this research, and I’d be happy to if it wasn’t poppycock based on a false premise.
Dr Alun Wyburn-Powell has apparently studied parliamentarians, but to become an MP, then and now, a candidate would need to be from amongst the upper echelons anyway.
Even trade union sponsored MP’s have been drawn from office workers rather than shop floor workers if they ever worked at all, and the potential traitors would naturally be drawn from a list of those who would be in a position of power and influence. The average cannon fodder private or NCO would be forced to keep quiet and get on with it regardless of what they felt about the war.
It just goes to show how easy it is for ‘research’ to stereotype groups of people, as IDS is now doing with his skivers vs strivers rhetoric.
Treat all such research findings and statistics with the utmost suspicion whoever they are aimed at……..

My Labour MP I was told by a reliable source, was chosen because nobody else wanted the job and as far as I’m concerned is as common as muck and the cheek of the devil, never answers e mails and insults people when they visit his surgeries. He may have a degree in history but as far as I can see is from the upper echelons of the gutter.

Many thanks for your comments. You say that you would like to agree with the research findings and I can reassure you that you can. Your point about MPs being posher than average among the population is entirely correct. However, the research was only conducted among MPs and it was the posher MPs who were more likely to defect than the less posh MPs.

Much as I agree that the upper classes are the least trustworthy (because having too much erodes an understanding of value) I don’t think this study is very reliable. The suspect list in the Second World War was bound to include more rich and famous people, because these people existed in the public conscience. Oswald Mosley was a known problem; Bob the Blackshirt was probably more covert! Also, the biggest act of treachery in the first half of the 20th century was probably committed by the supporters of Ramsay MacDonald who came from all classes.
What is more true is that almost everyone acts in their own self interest. The interests of the upper class are more likely to be exclusive and detrimental to the vast majority, which is why this class is so utterly useless to society.
