Liberal Democrat MPs who are out of work, education or training for six months after being turfed out of office in May will have to do unpaid community work or face losing their benefits, the Prime Minister David Cameron said in a speech today.
Mr Cameron said unemployed former Lib Dem members of parliament would be required to do daily work experience – alongside job searching – from day one of their claim after becoming unemployed as a result of the election.
Labour, however, attacked the proposals saying the Tories would do nothing to help desperate Lib Dems such as Nick Clegg and Danny Alexander – who are facing a bleak future without work – get “real jobs”.
The opposition for its part has pledged a compulsory jobs guarantee to help out unemployed Lib Dems, paid for by a tax on bankers’ bonuses.
However, to receive it, Lib Dems would be required to carry out 30 hours a week of mandatory community work from the first day of claiming benefits, which could involve making meals for older people or working for local charities, alongside 10 hours of job hunting.
Mr Cameron hit back, saying his proposed welfare shake-up would make sure Lib Dems “don’t get sucked into a life on welfare“, the Tory leader said.
The controversy comes just days after the Met’ Office warned that the record-breaking hot air from Lib Dems was set to continue for the foreseeable future.

Like what Cameron suggested the unemployed could help prepare meals for the elderly. Er that’s done by a big private company called Appetito who run wiltshire farm foods. And they are German
Maybe he is supporting work for nothing again which is a favourite hobby of IDS and the Tories

As a Professional community worker I do take great umbrage at the complete disregard for my profession – also VERY concerned at the issues around Criminal checks for these DWP prisoners??

Actually, it wouldn’t be a bad idea of members of all political parties had to do this before setting out on their careers in parliament. David Cameron in particular could do with a good, solid dose of appearing at the Jobcentre to be humiliated and then flung out in despair. This is the man, remember, who despite all his rhetoric about looking for work, has never actually needed to do so himself. He was head-hunted by palace, for heaven’s sake. For Cameron and establishment types like him, doors open that are very firmly shut to everyone else further down the social ladder. He should do it too.
Rather than turn up at the Jobcentre under his real identity, however, he should be forced to assume another, with his expensive education and impressive CV replaced by one more suited to someone from an ordinary background. Then he should be forced to go through the same rigmarole and hoops everyone else has to for their meagre pittance. After that, he can go on about ‘character building’ and how people actively need to find employment.

The so-called Lib Dems are a watered-down disgrace and an insult to British politics.
Having a Lib Dem for supper would be the equivalent of drinking watered-down lager when you could have seven shots of ouzo.
