The Ukraine crisis illustrates the folly of Cameron’s mad dash to hive off essential UK infrastructure to Russia and China
In 2011, the Prime Minister David Cameron – accompanied by British Petroleum’s chief executive Bob Dudley – met Russia’s then Prime Minister Putin to agree a contract which would allow Russia’s Gazprom to supply 20 per cent of Britain’s gas.
This resulted in an agreement to allow the Russians to become the UK’s second-biggest supplier of gas after British Gas:

This was part of a policy by the Lib Dem/Tory coalition government to hand over large parts of the UK infrastructure to foreign investors such as Russia and China.
I’ve already flagged how dangerous this policy might be. China is a brutal dictatorship, Russia is barely democratic run by corrupt mafia interests and neither have the best interests of UK citizens at heart:
Never mind the EU – how about a referendum on loss of UK sovereignty to China?
Cameron, Clegg and their ilk of course don’t care about that. All they care about is making as much profit as possible for their corporate friends.
The present unfolding crisis in Ukraine shows just what a folly the government’s policy has been.
Putin can do what he likes now. All he has to do is to threaten to turn off the tap.

Mr Pride is precisely right about the dangers of handing the British gas supply over to Russia and China. Putin’s government is violently autocratic: any journalist or political figure that does not toe the line is beaten up, to the point of journos having been thrown down stairwells. As for cutting off oil and gas supplies to those countries that don’t kowtow to Russian interests, this is a very real possibility. Putin did it to Estonia or one of the Baltic countries when they started standing up for their independence against Moscow. Yet maintaining the security of British energy resources hasn’t been a priority of the Tory party since Thatcher. It was Maggie, remember, who closed the pits down on the grounds that it was cheaper to import coal from Poland and Latin America. And at sometime in the future, we will have time to regret this policy, and those of Cameron and Bob Dudley.

Well the right wing in this country seem to think Russia is on the left, I think we owe Russia a great deal of gratitude for their support in the two world wars, many more of them went to their deaths than us.

As for Russians fighting & dying in WW2, There were Cossacks fighting for Germany from what is now Ukraine. The Russians & Nazis actually started the war on the same side, from different ideologies. What won the war for Russia was throwing every thing and everyone at the Nazis. Too cruel ideologies clashing on one side after the collapse of the old world feudal monarchy. On the other side another feudal monarchy & empire was getting all shook up. Out of all this killing and destruction grew entities like the Labour party. Karl Marx is buried in London for a reason. Britain leads the world in socialism scholars. Its not Communism, its Socialism. Nothing to do with Russia or China or North Korea. The NHS and many forward thinking ideas that grew in Britain after two global conflicts have shone light into many dark corners of the globe, yet still the sociopaths & meglomaniacs in the press attack socialism. Why is Russia used as a parallel with socialism & communism on Facebook or Twitter? Surely some basic understanding of History exists beyond propaganda?
