Natural England and Natural Resources Wales have mysteriously given the go-ahead for protected species such as robins, starlings, blackbirds and bullfinches to be shot:
Licences granted to kill multiple Red-listed species
I say mysteriously, because the reasons given are very strange.
When asked why these licences have been granted, Natural England simply claim the birds are a “threat to public health and air safety” and the slaughter is to “prevent serious damage to livestock”.
It’s somewhat hard to imagine how starlings and robins could ever be a danger to the public or herds of cows.
Of course, the fact that these protected nesting birds are one of the biggest problems facing property developers (*see information below) when they attempt to develop brownfield sites for residential housing is nothing at all to do with the decision.
As, I’m sure, is the fact that the Chair of Natural England, Andrew Sells, also happens to be one of the founders of Linden Homes, a property development business specialising in the development of brownfield sites for residential housing.
Tory government ministers chose Andrew Sells – a venture capitalist with no experience of ecological or environmental matters – as the Chair of Natural England a few years ago.
A surprise decision which I’m sure was not at all influenced by the fact that Andrew Sells is a major Tory party donor and the fact that property developers in general are some of the Tories’ biggest donors.
No conflicts of interest at all then.
.
*All wild birds, their nests and young are protected throughout England and Wales by the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 (as amended). It is illegal to kill, injure or take any wild bird, or damage or destroy the nest or eggs of breeding birds.
If nests, whether completed or in the process of being built, are found on site, any works with the potential to damage or destroy the nest, eggs or young birds, must stop until the birds have completed breeding.
Birds may nest on machinery or scaffolding and other temporary site structures. If this happens the equipment cannot be used until the birds have finished nesting and such areas may need to be sealed off to prevent disturbance.
Breaking the law can lead to fines of up to £5000 per offence and potential prison sentences of up to six months. Vehicles implicated in an offence can be compounded and both the company, and/or the individual(s) concerned, can be held liable.
The undeclared war being waged on Britain’s wildlife by wealthy landowners
Here’s the real reason the Tories are allowing the destruction of robin eggs and nests
Elite and tabloid press – fresh from attacking Britain’s wild birds – now turning on bats

Was shocked to see this article, and asked RSPB Hi Anouchka, thank you for getting in touch. I can confirm we are aware of this matter & are trying to find out further detail. The RSPB is currently in the process of working with Natural Resources Wales on the licensing process to make sure it is fit for purpose.
Without knowing the reasons for each license, it is impossible to comment on individual cases, but some of the species that have been listed raise questions. As a rule, most licenses should only be issued when legal (including non-lethal) methods of resolving the problem are ineffective or impracticable.
If you would like further information as to the issuing of licences by Natural England, I would advise getting in touch with them directly as we cannot comment on the policy and operations of any external organisation

I can assure you that small scale and private developers have no such concession, nor would they want one, even though their impact on species would be far less unlike impact on their cashflow.

I can add some clarity here as my brother knowd someone who works for Natural England and asked him to check what the hell is going on. Nearly all of these cases are to do with last resorts. A lot of the birds, such as Robins, have got themselves into food preparation areas and have avoided trapping and other methods of removing them. As a matter of necessity they have to be removed one way or another and shooting is the last resort. As far as the larger things, like Curlews, are concerned these mostly come about because they have taken up residence near airports and refuse to be scared away. As they pose a danger to aircraft they have to be removed and again shooting is a last resort. There are a couple of species, such as the Bullfinch, that cause damage to crops and so again as a last resort licences are granted to shoot them. Personally I and my brother have a particular problem with people shooting Bullfinches as they are not particularly common around here and they are always a joy to see.
This is not open season on our birds. These licences are granted when all other solutions have failed and the numbers are very low (single figures in most cases and just one in some cases). I hope that helps 🙂

For goodness sake. We are already in the sixth mass extinction. We are losing 200 species a day of birds, animals, insects, flowers and trees. We are in the midst of a global climate crisis. You don’t need to be Einstein to work our where we’re heading. This is utter madness and the idiots responsible for this need to be shot – not the birds.

Indeed Susan. Heaven help us and our animal and insect friends when 5G is introduced. Apart from damaging health it requires the culling of hundreds of thousands of trees.

This is totally disgusting that the Tories have given permission for property developers to have a license to kill protected species of Robins Starling blackbirds and Bullfinches. These birds are all a protected species by law and anyone who kills these birds and Destroys Nests should be prosecuted And find I think it’s ridiculous to say that these birds are a danger to the public and wildlife if this were true we would have heard about this over the years people would have complained about such things happening We need to look after and protect our wild life they have every right to live the same as any other wild life if this gets permitted this would be the end to Thousands of our beautiful wild life We must stop this evil thing from ever happening this would hangar Thousands of people

The current government are criminal low life on every imaginable front. They have zero respect for the people, the culture, nature. I regard them as enemies, as I do the Labour Party, incidentally. We need patriotic and nationalistic governments across Europe. One day the UK will become a Phoenix reborn.

What the hell is this? How can any government allow this unbelievable slaughter? Perhaps property developers should answer what is at the root of this. They, property developers, are amongst the most destructive, greedy creatures in society and perhaps need more legislation again them?

Why are these people out to destroy nature, especially to robins and other nesting birds who bring delight to every garden. These birds are no harm to anyone or property,. God made these little creatures for a purpose, not to be destroyed by people who wish to exterminate nature because it spoils the look of housing estates. Like human’s, birds foxes, squirrels, and other wildlife are here for a reason not to be destroyed or exterminated for the sake of spoiling a site.
