(not satire)
Go back in time a bit.
A coalition government of conservatives and liberals – backed by the Rupert Murdoch press – wins the general election.
The coalition starts to implement policies which hit the poorest the hardest – fees for healthcare including GP visits, attacks on welfare for the sick and disabled, cuts to funding for further education, as well as countless other attacks on the low paid.
The new government also starts to attack green policies put into place by the previous government and gives large tax cuts to large corporations – policies which favour big business again at the expense of the poorest.
Sound familiar? Of course, except that this election didn’t take place in the UK in 2010 but in Australia in 2013.
There are so many similarities between the two coalition governments in the UK and Australia its frightening.
Both governments use the same PR advisers – Crosby Textor – which has advised both governments to try to win public backing for their policies with campaigns designed to demonise immigrants and blame newcomers for the ills brought about by their own policies.
It seems this is becoming a truly global war on the poor.

Two things which might save us in Australia are 1) the Senate, the Upper House, where the government do not currently have a majority and might not be able to get the worst of their policies through, and 2) the maximum three year term that they can stay in office before they have to go back to the people; they’re already trailing in the opinion polls just 3 months after the election. Your 5 year terms mean you’re at the mercy of the greedy uncaring bastards – so are we, but not to the same extent. Labor brought this on themselves with what they did to Rudd in 2010 (without that, Abbott would have been toast 3 years ago), but I hope the Australian voters have now come to their senses, I guess we’ll find out; hopefully, before this lot can duplicate the damage in the UK.

I knew this would happen when I heart the ‘Right Wing Think Tank’ of Australia – of which one Rupert Murdoch is a member – had met not too long before Tony Abbott was ‘elected’ [rather, shoe-horned in by the Murdoch press].

New Zealand is also following this model and it’s perhaps no coincidence that NZ Prime Minister John Key regards David Cameron as a good friend. The war on the poor has been going on here since Key and the National Party won the 2008 election and has intensified since their re-election in 2011. The Minister of Social Development Paula Bennett thought nothing of releasing private details of a couple of beneficiaries who challenged her in public. Shamefully nothing has come of that breach.
The immigration card is a bit more difficult to play because the NZ population is extraordinarily fluid by world standards. More than a quarter of the population was born outside the country and in Auckland the proportion is nearer 40%. So instead we got increased powers to turn back refugees who cross the Tasman Sea (a mere 2,000 km to Australia). This is based on ‘credible’ intelligence from Australia that refugees coming from Indonesia are planning on crossing 7,000 km of sea to NZ.
And then there is the increased surveillance powers granted to the Government Communications Security Bureau after it was revealed to have been illegally spying on New Zealanders. The story behind how that was uncovered involves one Kim Dotcom the target of an illegal police raid aided, illegally, by the GCSB and all done at the behest of the FBI and MPAA. Dotcom however is now a bit of a cult hero (Kiwis love underdogs) and so far has taken down two ministers with promises of further revelations during his extradition hearing later this year. Dotcom’s mansion which was raided by 70 odd armed officers happens to be in PM Key’s constituency but the PM apparently never knew about Dotcom until he was informed that the raids were about to take place – what we Kiwis call a “Yeah, right” moment.
Read this excellent Huff Post piece about John Key’s scarcely credible “Apartheid Amnesia” http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/yasmine-ryan/apartheid-new-zealand_b_4411734.html
And I’ve not even started about the gross and increasing inequality in New Zealand http://www.inequality.org.nz/why-the-poverty-line-is-valid-and-265000-children-really-are-in-poverty/ remember the NZ population is only 4.4 million
OK rant over but yes, the war on the poor is worldwide.

Pity the poor, and the working class.
One political mob takes from the rich and gives to the poor, and then the other lot get in power and take from the poor and give to the rich.
Australia has just started with that second mob and they’re shaping up to being one of the most efficient ever in the Dept. of Taking and Giving.
The bottom feeders are at the beginning of a trip to hell, whilst the top end of town will think it’s Christmas for 3 years.
It’s a vicious cycle, but this sector is shaping up to be one of the worst ever suffered by the “lucky” working class. I pity those out of work as they will suffer even more.
The quality of Australia’s politicians has deteriorated over the last 20 or so years, and in particular, their behaviour in the House of Reps recently is beyond embarrassment.
Children DO behave better than many of our elected members.
I won’t bog down into details of the many shortcomings, but I feel it could be summarised by this cartoon . . . . . .
Cheers
Mick
