(not satire – it’s the Lib Dems!)
I’m not sure why so many people are surprised that the Lib Dems so readily agreed to the Tory’s plans to break up and privatise the NHS.
Because their leaders have been talking about it for years.
Here are three historic quotes from senior Liberal Democrat figures on the ‘need’ to break up and privatise the NHS:
Lib Dem government minister David Laws said the NHS should be broken up because it would mean:
“Greater choice and competition for patients, better funding and health outcomes.”
Lib Dem peer Dame Shirley Williams said people should pay to visit their GPs because:
“the French I think charge something equivalent to £5 per appointment. It might get people to value the service.”
Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg also said the NHS should be broken up because:
“I think breaking up the NHS is exactly what you do need to do to make it a more responsive service.”
There are also quite a few senior Liberal Democrat MPs who have financial links to private health firms:
Menzies Campbell MP – former leader: Non-executive director of Scottish American Investment Company plc, which took over care homes when Southern Cross collapsed.
Vince Cable MP – Business Secretary: Received a donation of £2,000 from Chartwell Care Services, which is 100% owned by Chartwell Health & Care PLC. It also owns Chartwell Private Hospitals plc, which provide day case surgery to NHS patients.
Nick Clegg MP – Deputy Prime Minister: Received a donation to his constituency office for £5,000 from Alpha Medical Consultancy.
Simon Hughes MP – Justice Minister: Received £60,000 donation to his constituency party from the founder of Alpha Hospitals, a private hospital firm.
Sir Robert Smith MP: Has shares in pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline.
Jo Swinson MP – Business Minister: Received a donation of £2,000 September 2013 from private optician firm, Peter Ivins Eye Care.
.
Don’t let Clegg and co fool you now there’s an election coming up.
The truth is that the Liberal Democrats have always been fans of the so-called ‘marketisation’ and privatisation of the NHS.

People have to pay National Insurance already so why should they have to pay again for GP visits?
The true that the end of the day is that the Neo-Liberals in the LibDems would be more honest if they joined the Tories and the Social Democrats in the party would be both more effective and honest if they joined the Labour Party.

they put millstones around the neck of the nhs ie PFI, and use the resultant drag to claim the nhs is in need of reform and profitisation..admin costs spiral from 6% to 30/40%…massive over treatment occurs, as gp’s are paid by treatments rather than by core ethic of giving the best possible health care to all…as well as preclusion for some members of our society…this is clearly explained and demonstrated in the presentations of dr lucy reynolds…see this clip presented by prof allyson pollock… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cz5dl9fhj7o

Actually, totally agree with charging for GPs. There’s two problems with the UK GPs. They are over-used often by people who don’t need to see them. When you are unwell and need say antibiotics you are looking at a 2 week wait to book an appointment. Which is why people overcrowd A and E services. Second, doctors should be made to compete for our custom. They don’t offer a good level of service compared to France. It’s not a good deal. We pay for dental care and the poor can be reimbursed.

They only have 8% of the public vote-ideas like this will lower their vote even further. The Lib Dems don’t know how much trouble they are in.

The National Insurance contributions give right to NHS, but only fund a tiny bit of the NHS. One third of NI goes to NHS, one third towards unemployed benefit and one third to the state pension.
The NI is wrongly called in surplus since 2013, when this is the denied state pension payout by the raised retirement age from 60 to 66 for women and 65 to 66 and above for men since 2013.
PEOPLE OLDER THAN THESE ABOUT TO BE HIT BY NIL STATE PENSION FOR LIFE, THEN US AFTER NEXT PARLIAMENT 2019-2020 ONWARDS
See why, at end of my petition, in my WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT section, at:
NHS MOSTLY FUNDED BY GENERAL TAXATION
ALWAYS HAS BEEN AS TOO HUGE
The rest of the huge budget comes from general taxation, which 75 per cent of which comes from stealth indirect taxes and VAT, even on food, that we all pay, in or out of work and however long we live.
VOTE OUT LIB DEMS
TACTICAL VOTING
VOTE DIFFERENT
NOT SUCH THING AS A SMALL PARTY
The National Health Action party is running about 13 MP candidates.
The parties of the poor of the left are all for a completely public NHS.
Getting nil coverage in blogs and media, national press and TV news.
The poor are now about 75 per cent of the people, and the bulk of voters in most voting areas.
You can easily unseat the sitting Tory and Lib Dem MP throughout the UK.

Another excellent piece by Tom Pride pointing out just how much the Lib Dems are in favour of the Tories’ privatisation of the NHS, complete with quotes from leading party members and a list of those with links to private healthcare companies.
There’s an entire chapter advocating the privatisation of the NHS in the Lib Dem’s wretched Orange Book, so it’s practically party policy and established ideology. There is thus absolutely no reason why anyone poor, disabled or sick should vote for them.

Break it up and lose it to an American-style system or even TO the Americans under TTIP. They talk of choice when no one asks for choice. People want local access to good health care, that’s it.

British and Australian politics have so much in common these days. The quality of the majority of our pollies has deteriorated drastically over the last few decades.
Another very common element is the difference in the condition of promises made, before and after the election.
What is promised before an election, doesn’t necessarily match what actually happens after the election. This appears to be some kind of a tradition.
Canberra is the seat of federal politics in Australia, and this cartoon looks at the problem of political promises . . . . . . .
