(not satire – it’s sold-off Britain today)
There’s been a great deal of justified anger over the Banksy piece of art which was torn off the wall of a Poundland shop in Wood Green and put up for auction on a US website for £450,000.
Poundland have said they had nothing to do with it and it was the responsibility of the building’s owners.
Well the owner of the building seems to be a private limited company called WOOD GREEN INVESTMENTS LIMITED of

SOUTHEND ROAD
WOODFORD GREEN
ESSEX
IG8 8HD
There are two directors:
- LESLIE STEVEN GILBERT – Director
- ROBERT ALAN DAVIES – Director, Secretary
Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find any email address for them.
Pity really. It would have been nice to let them know just what I think of them.
Wouldn’t it?

If anyone can shed more light on this company or these people, I’d love to know about it.

Why should they not do this? If I was them I most certainly would, and so would I expect every single person reading this article who isnt also bloody rich, please let’s all be honest for once.

Tom the point of banksys work is that it is meant to be viewed in situ .not in some private collection out of context. It’s public art. But that’s hoe business ppl think steal from public for their own gain.

Yep, I’d flog it in an instant. Then I could retire to a life of self improvement. Painting watercolours of budgies or something.

Even if they owned it . It could weaken the property thus putting the other buildings around it at risk.

its all very well people complaining about these guys, but what is FAR more interesting for me is that because Banksy has made street art acceptable and popular we have now seen the other side of the coin. If Banksy wants the art to be seen ‘in situ’ then he should make sure he does not put his art on privately owned buildings, which brings us full circle to the ‘graffiti is defacing other people’s property argument’ of yore when it was argued graffitiists were a public menace because……. they put their work on other people’s buildings!! WOOHOO! No one has yet explained why these two people were wrong in doing this if they had a legal right to do so. So you find Picasso in your attic. Does that mean you must leave the Picasso in your attic and let the world come and see it? Or can you sell it for your own personal gain. Everyone get off their high horses please. Banksy knows who he is now, and to believe anything different would be woefully naive in a way that I cannot believe he is. In many respects I’m actually amazed it has taken this long for something like this to happen. If he painted on their walls, without asking their permission, they can bloody well do what they like, end of.

Surely that’s a problem for the buyer. May look nice on the mantlepiece. Public had no more right to it than the artist did to paint it in the first place.

with the greatest respect are you saying you would do differently given the chance? ok. So you find an old master in the attic of a house you buy. So you donate it to the nation yes? Personally I’d sell it at auction and pocket the money, but i am actually too poor to even buy a house within zone 3, even as a teacher. So sadly not a crisis of conscience I’l be facing any time soon.

Don’t try to oversimplify our questions AND write us off ‘Thatcherite Kid’s’ you supercilious patronising simpleton! We have asked a very simple and very basic quation which is thus….. would any of us do any differently? What strikes me with a very large number or ‘trolls’ like yourself (sorry) commentors I should say, is that it so VERY VERY easy to say that int heir place you would have risen above such terrible base instincts as to make your life a little easier (Thatcherite child? I am a teacher to children in Zone 2 state schools English and Spanish, and I bet you have a far more ‘Thatcherite/Commercial job than I do sir), no… you sir would of course never think of making your life a little easier for you and your loved ones by profiting from such uncommon blind luck as this???? no of course not you would just polish your collection of halos and make the world a better place as I’m sure you do every minute of every day. Keep telling yourself the same lies about yourself, and keep attacking everyone around you instead of looking for common ground and understanding. It is after all when you are happiest isnt it sir?

I have a suspicion that Banksy might regard this act of ‘vandalism’ for profit as part of his ‘art’.
As Bobchewie says, it is a pretty overt example of privatisation without regard to the damage that is done to the structures left behind. There is a clear analogy with privatisation of the NHS, the imminent transfer of probation services, fire brigade etc and the prospect of privatised education.
