(not satire – it’s the Lib Dems!)
There’s been – quite rightly – lots of focus recently on UKIP local election candidates’ vile views on various things from gay marriage to race.
But it should be remembered that the Lib Dems have a longer and just as shameful history in local elections when it comes to racism and homophobia.
In previous local elections, the Lib Dems have not been averse to producing a racist leaflet – depicting an obviously black man, snarling with clenched fists and supposedly threatening elderly residents – if they thought it would win them votes.
And the Lib Dems have also not been averse to using a bit of homophobia if they thought it would win them an election.
Here’s a Lib Dem leaflet from a local election in 2012 in which one of their local candidates was pitted against an openly gay Tory candidate:
Mind you, all of this should come as no surprise to anyone.
In 2002, a secret Liberal Democrat document came to light – produced by the Association of Liberal Democrat Councillors – in which local activists were urged to “be wicked, act shamelessly, stir endlessly” in order to win elections.
In fact, ask anyone who’s been involved in local politics and they’ll tell you Liberal Democrat activists are the most infamous for playing dirty, using underhand methods and being utterly ruthless.
Exactly as they’ve turned out to be nationally in their coalition with the Tories.

I’ve heard about the Lib Dems’ dirty tricks from a former Tory councillor. This doesn’t make the Tories any better, but it does reveal how nasty the supposed successors to John Stuart Mill can be.

Didn’t they also use the ‘straight fight’ gimmick to get Simon Hughes elected over poor Peter Tatchell (who received beatings and death threats) in Bermondsey?

For a self-proclaimed font of democracy to the world this shames us as insolent usurpers – we can and should be doing much, much better by now!
