The number of tabloid journalists relying on food banks to survive has tripled over the last year, according to new figures.

The Trussell Trust, which runs 400 food banks across the UK, said it handed out supplies to three times more reporters working for tabloid newspapers between January and April this year than the whole of last year.

According to Trussell, almost a third of those being helped were freelance journalists on temporary contracts with the Daily Mail, with more than a half saying they desperately needed the handouts in order for their careers to survive.

A cross-party group of MPs has been set up to investigate the surge in demand for food banks from tabloid newspaper correspondents.
