The shameless attempts by top Tories to whitewash their involvement in the tragic bullying to suicide of young Elliott Johnson is a sight to behold.
At Elliott’s inquest, Paul Abbott – the CEO of the Thatcherite organisation Conservative Way Forward at the time Elliott was sacked – had the breathtaking audacity to claim he and the organisation too were victims of bullying by Clarke.
This is a lie.
They weren’t. They were in on it. Leading members of CWF were as thick as thieves with Clarke. Abbott himself was a close friend of Clarke. Here is Abbott (on the left) being ‘bullied’ by Clarke:
And the Chair of CWF at the time – Donal Blaney – was also close friends of Clarke. Here he is also being ‘bullied’ by Clarke:
The horrible truth is CWF sacked poor Elliott for complaining about Clarke. Elliott took his life just a month after receiving this letter from CWF:
“Further to your email exchange with our HR consultant, I was asked to review our operational requirements to establish your ways to limit your exposure to an external individual following an incident you described which occurred on 12th August 2015. As part of the exercise I have identified that there is a diminishing need for a dedicated political editor for CWF and therefore it is with regret that I write to notify you that your role is at risk of redundancy.”
But why is there such a big attempt by the Tories to hide CWF from its involvement in the bullying scandal?
Here is the official list of CWF presidents and patrons. As you can see it’s a rollcall of Thatcherite luminaries – leading with Thatcher herself:
FOUNDING PRESIDENT
The Rt Hon Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven LG OM FRS
HONORARY VICE-PRESIDENTS
Christopher Chope OBE MP
The Rt Hon Dr Liam Fox MP
The Rt Hon Greg Hands MP
The Rt Hon Lord Hague of Richmond FRSL
The Rt Hon Lord Parkinson of Carnforth
The Rt Hon Lord Tebbit of Chingford CH
PARLIAMENTARY COUNCIL
Sir Gerald Howarth MP – Chairman
James Cleverly MP – Deputy Chairman
Conor Burns MP
Rt. Hon. Greg Hands MP
Charlie Elphicke MP
BOARD
Donal Blaney – Chairman
Cllr Paul Osborn – Vice-Chairman
Paul Abbott – Chief Executive
CWF is a VERY important and influential organisation within the Tory Party. It is seen as the gatekeeper of Thatcher’s legacy.
It’s time to stop pussyfooting around and tell the truth over the Tory bullying scandal.
Top Tories have known of countless complaints against Clarke going back many years. The complaints were consistently covered up by those same top Tories. The complaints were serious – including numerous allegations of sexual harassment assault and blackmail.
Don’t let the Tories whitewash the truth.
Clarke with Sir Eric Pickles:
Clarke with David Cameron:
Clarke with Grant Shapps:
Clarke with John Major:
Clarke with Tory Baroness, Emma Pidding:
Clarke was also very close to cabinet minister Justine Greening MP:
Clarke and Boris Johnson:
And Clarke was so close to Murdoch lackey Paul Staines – AKA Guido Fawkes – he was invited to the blog’s 10th anniversary party:

Mike’s reblogged this over at Vox Political, and his comment is worth reading. He points out that you can tell an issue is extremely serious, when Tom Pride just presents the straight truth without humour or satire. This is such a case.
I am not surprised the Tories are desperately trying to cover all this up. Their first instinct has always been to watch out for the great and powerful, against the poor, the weak and the defenceless. And it’s also struck me that that the bullying mentality is deeply ingrained in the Tory character. I’ll give you another example, not of bullying precisely, but of the lickspittle mentality of those who dance attendance on the bigger boys and girls when they pick on someone.
A few years ago the BBC showed a clip of Maggie Thatcher’s response to British Airways’ redesign of their tailfin logo. It was after the 1982 riots, and someone had told the management that the traditional Union Jack design on the tailfin was a bit too traditionally British. So they’d replaced it with a brown, ethnic design which looked like it was based on African or Aboriginal Australian traditional art. The clip showed Thatcher looking at a model of the aircraft with the new design on the fin. ‘Oh no,’ she said primly. ‘This won’t do.’ And she covered it up with a bit of tissue. This was in front of the head of British Airways himself. Standing either side of her were two aids in suits, who sniggered at Thatcher’s antics and the other fellow’s humiliation. To me, it encapsulates and symbolised the whole culture of public school bullying and petty vindictiveness that’s a fundamental part of the Tory party.

The more attempts I see at inflating this into a major party-wide scandal the less credible I find it. Clearly Mark Clarke is a nasty piece of work and his appalling behaviour was probably instrumental in the death of a vulnerable young man. BUT if he’s the only such person working in the Tory, Labour and other parties then I’ll eat my hat.
I think this should be put this into the perspective. On man’s behaviour seems to have resulted in one death. The behaviour of Blair, Straw, Campbell and others in New Labour resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of men, women and children, as well as real scandals such as the state-approved torture of prisoners.

So Andy – you think that it’s only New Labour that have the deaths of hundreds of thousands on their hands? How about the Tories of today who have caused the death of hundreds of thousands in Syria? What about the deaths that they are responsible for of those who have been kicked off ESA, been told to find work, have committed suicide, have died due to starvation etc.?
Thatcher herself was the cause of thousands of deaths in the Falklands as she gave the order to fire the first shot even though the Argentina ship was still outside Falkland waters?
We could carry on blaming different parties for different things but this news is about the bullying that led to the death of a man who was actually bullied by his own party! Not Labour, not SNP, not Lib/Dems but Tory. Is that a better perspective?

Sorry jaypot, but it’s NOTHING like perspective. One man who sadly committed suicide is NOT similar to hundreds of thousands of innocent people being deliberately killed, maimed and tortured.
Also, how did you come to the ridiculous conclusion about “the Tories of today who have caused the death of hundreds of thousands in Syria”? Are you claiming that this Tory government started the war in Syria? I must have missed that news story!
There is plenty to criticise this Tory government about without making silly things up……

Now that it’s been revealed in the Coroners court that he suffered from depression and had attempted suicide three times before, it’s very unlikely that his suicide will be seriously linked to bullying by the Tory party, whether it’s true or not.
