The infamous and tragic Charge of the Light Brigade is the story of an out-of-touch leadership so blinded by over-confidence that they willingly chose to charge headlong into a disastrous situation they knew they couldn’t win.

The tragic charge at the Battle of Balaclava was caused by misunderstandings, strategic incompetence, over-confidence on the part of an arrogant leadership, squabbling between the main decision-makers and a general over-estimation of the strength of the British position.

The original orders for the Light Cavalry to put on a simple tactical show of strength, were deliberately and recklessly misinterpreted by incompetent leaders to lead their men into a suicidal and futile full-frontal attack.

The charge was breathtakingly disastrous for Britain – and of course particularly devastating in its outcome for the brave rank and file who were forced to take part in it – but not so devastating for the aristocratic leadership whose incompetence led to the disaster.

Lord Cardigan – who led the charge – was one of the few to survive it, and after he left the field he went on board his luxury yacht in Balaclava harbour, where he ate a champagne dinner.
Just as I’m sure the wealthy people who are leading the Charge of the Brexit Brigade will also survive the disaster, and after the devastation will be able to board their own luxury yachts to eat champagne dinners too.
Leaving the rest of us in the rank and file to survive the horrific mess they’ve left behind.
The question is, are we going to doff our caps and allow our out-of-touch leaders to send us into disaster once again?

My 5xGreat uncle was groom to one of the senior officers. He watched the charge holding the officer’s horse and as it unfolded the officer dismounted, walked off and shot himself. My uncle mounted the horse and rode back to the safety of the camp. Can we hope some of our “leaders” might be so scrupulous? No, probably they would stab the groom and ride for the hills.

re. “Scotland Forever”, which was equally as tragic in its own way as they needlessly overreached themselves and suffered heavy casualties. My home county regiment was the 28th Foot immortalised in a painting of Quatre Bras.
Our politicians overreached themselves, clouds and cuckoo’s springs to mind, and the people of the country will be the casualties, each of us to some extent, indeed many of us have already felt the effects. Those who have pushed this ball along will probably come out fine and dandy.

1. brexit will not happen as May develops ‘new and stronger links with the EU’
2. in what way is the ‘anglo-french’ club democratic?
3. in what way would the people of the UK want to be part of the increasingly centralised and dictatorial set up of the EU?
4. the chaos is planned and not incompetent although it does highlight the many differences amongst leavers and remainers and NOT ONE of them are including the people in their plans!!

This comparison is seemingly accurate to the extent that even imbecile supporters of tories and UKIP can understand the correlation between the incompetents and the sufferers of their idiotic decisions. Even worse is the consideration the EU cannot be seen to reward brexit with a fair deal thus Brexit has to be utter failure for the EU nations to Bond and others not choose the UK option.

the alternate stance is the EU have no choice whatsoever but to give a certain few britains everything they asks for in a giant double bluff promise to make the main britain a horrific out scenario whilst said ‘certain few’ lap up the goodies in a never been a better deal all rounder.
I think you’ll find this the Tory debate they are taking to the discussion on their bit of paper …the ‘one sheet’ says ”what’s in it for me”. HRM@G4S.co.uk

Trouble is the people voted to leave the EU.., to leave the Single Market… and leave the custom union. So your analogy with the Charge of the Light Brigade is frankly cretinous. Swinish thing this democracy when you disagree with the people’s verdict.

Did you not read that nice booklet that mentioned leaving the single market and leaving the custom union and how the sky would fall in if we did? We the people democratically elected to leave despite project fear.

the only question is what deal and for whom it benefits and whom it does not…
democracy doesnt exist in this country as its a monarchy,so its called a ‘benevolence’ or tyranny depending on who’s RM of the day ..democracy is a USA term for democratic view..Democratic is the right to negotiate a ‘deal’ thats fair to everyone …annnnd this is the point ,not what your seeing as a ”we want to stay” issue …nobody is saying that here at the moment (some do suggest) ,people are saying (and rightly so imo) that its being deliberately manipulated to only benefit some and not the voters …thats the opposite of democratic
and those who wanted in as much as those who wanted out (out myself) have to be vigilant and awake and scrutinize everything thats put on paper so you ,me and all understand what the next 10 years mean.
