Time to totally ban this barbaric activity once and for all.

150 years ago other cruel sports such as bear baiting, bull fighting and dog fighting were legal in Britain. No one would suggest now that those cruel sports be legalised again and we believe the same is true of hunting with packs of dogs – nobody has the right to be cruel to animals.

The law, introduced by Labour in 2004, bans the use of dogs to hunt foxes and other wild mammals in England and Wales.
The Elitest don’t like it. So ignore the law, and continue with the act of pack dogs hunting for these poor animals.
Theresa May used the snap election to include a free vote for MPs on repealing the fox hunting ban in the Conservative manifesto – a pledge that appeared to be scrapped following the loss of her party’s majority at the election.

Country folk do not like the city dweller poking their noses into their bussiness. The rich and well to do folk love hunting and deem it a sport.

Killing any animal for sport is not accepted in this day and age. Tom is saying that a total ban should be in place I would think. These nice well to do country folk flout the law and do as they please.

I’m sorry Shadow, I still don’t understand. Killing foxes for sport or with dogs is already illegal. I think same applies to all mammals as far as I know. What is this “total ban” you and (apparently) this blog are asking for?

The author and readers of this blog are obviously far more interested in annoying toffs than actually stopping cruelty to animals. It’s all about class war and nothing whatsoever about how to really improve animal welfare.

Shadow – What tin? You previously implied that hunting for food is OK with you, but now you say that hunting “for any other reason” must also be banned. What is it you actually want to ban? Should it be illegal to catch a trout and eat it?

You are taking my statement out of context. Either that or simply digging for an argument. “Hunting animals for any other reason” such as trophy hunting wild animals. Not in the meaning for food. My fault for not being precise in my meaning/wording I guess. But now you know. So I hope I have cleared that up for you.
As for the tin…Well you can work that one out.

No Shadow, I’m afraid I still don’t understand what it is you want to ban, or what Tom Pride wants either. As far as I know, hunting any mammals for ‘sport’ in the UK is ALREADY illegal.

[No. It’s NOT illegal to hunt mammals in the UK. It’s illegal to kill them with dogs. Hunting them with dogs (but not killing them) is legal. Shooting them, also, is legal (if you have a licence) But if the dogs kill an animal ‘by accident’ before the animal is shot – then the hunters can get away with it by just saying it was the dog’s fault, not theirs. Hunters have even sometimes blamed sabs for dogs killing foxes by saying the protesters ‘got in their way’ when they were trying to control the dogs. The law as it stands at the moment has far too many loopholes. There needs to be a total ban on hunting, full stop. Hope that clears up your query – which I must say you could have cleared up yourself with the help of Google.] – TOM

Perhaps the public could now have the fox hunting ban enforced by the senior politicians who serve them, and the resulting offenders sent to court, tried, and if found to be guilty then punished / jailed as criminals.
It is within the power of Parliament after all.
Enforcement is the key word. This needs to commence immediately and must apply right across the UK. Before somebody is killed by these people.
But sadly, it seems that there’s something preventing due process from occurring.
I don’t know the figures for criminals fined or jailed in the 13 years since the ban came in, but suspect it will be relatively low, and the thugs on horseback in this video – and at other illegal hunts – occupy the same camp as whichever group of people it is (I suspect mainly senior members of the Tory party in both the Commons and the Lords) that is repeatedly failing to enforce UK law, and is defensive of this outdated, hideously cruel, barbaric activity.
The evidence of this video and others tells us that these thugs are resistant to change – determinedly and violently so – but find ready protection from sympathetic power abusers in high office for their ongoing cruel, illegal endeavours. With this illegal protection in place, they feel emboldened to go on breaking statutory law with impunity.
I think the above are all reasonable assumptions to make.
I suspect a change of government will be needed though before we can invest in the new prisons required to contain them.
Myself and my daughters would gladly giver of our time as volunteer screws to help look after, feed and care for them, give them lots of advice and ensure they mended their awful, awful ways before being released as rehabilitated citizens, ready to vote Labour.

It’s interesting that you think “There needs to be a total ban on hunting, full stop”. Perhaps we can examine your idea to see how it would work… Would your ban include all animals or just certain ones? For instance, would it be illegal to shoot or trap rats? Would I be guilty of an offence if I use a cat to hunt and kill mice? Can a smallholder shoot and eat pigeons which are eating his pea crop?

A Total ban on animal cruelty for sport….not in place as a watertight law but needed and is being called/asked for …. as if said animal escapes alive or is shot before its ripped apart,it’s legal hunting/playing ie not banned and should be because they are playing the loophole legal hunt ie freindly gallop on your back with pals and dogs chasing the joyous spirited loving the romp fox across the dells in a wonderful all loving way vs Illegal haw haw look the fox is being shreaded to death by our jolly good breed whilst we watch wishing they would lift the ban on doing it to the commoners …’banned illegal nonsense what what tally ho’….

This could have been resolved easily, if they were willing.
Put the breed of dog into the dangerous dog act, if taken out in a pack or loosened off the lead.

Hi Tom – I’m afraid you are simply wrong. The only hunting of mammals for sport which still continue are fox hunting and hare coursing, and both are ALREADY illegal. There’s no point shouting about banning something which is already banned. You didn’t answer, but are you saying that ALL hunting (whether for sport, food or pest control) should be banned? That’s a valid and moral argument, but you don’t seem to have one.
Enforcement is another matter and the police don’t do enough, perhaps understandably. If I was overworked and I had to choose between bringing a paedophile or rapist to justice and prosecuting a hunt then I would have no moral hesitation. Instead of the objective of activists being to ‘annoy the toffs’ (as you so tellingly said) it should be to get video and witness evidence and bring prosecutions, privately if necessary.
Masmit is right – maybe the laws about keeping dogs should be changed, because there is a much wider problem in this country of uncontrolled dogs not only killing foxes, but also livestock, pets and even children.
The reality is that far more animals are killed and with more cruelty in hare coursing than fox hunting. Sadly hare coursing doesn’t get much attention on blogs like this, because fox hunting is a ‘sport’ of the rich and (as Terry said above) in fact your blog is about class war and not about how to really improve animal welfare.

Your response to Horse, highlights the problem.
Hunting meaning no chasing and killing is being abused hence your article.
They are saying it’s recreational, a hobby and it was an accident if the hounds catch a fox.
Like I said if the law was changed saying this breed of dog had to be on a lead when out in public. It would stop them being out in a pack.
This would also stop the riddling out of prosecution, if found out on a hunt.

Some argue that ‘hunting’ should continue because it’s a grand old British tradition. However, bear baiting and bull baiting were also traditions, and they were rightfully consigned to the history books. Traditions are measured in more than years. They have to reflect the values and attitudes of a society, and the vast majority of the British people oppose hunting with dogs.
