UPDATE: Brexit strongholds Cornwall, Wales and Stoke-on-Trent have joined Grimsby in demanding exemptions for themselves from Brexit.
The Lincolnshire fishing town of Grimsby voted 70% for Brexit:
But now – incredibly – they are looking for an exemption for themselves:
Some are calling the town’s Brexit voting residents ‘idiots’:
But let’s be charitable and agree to call them ‘misled plonkers’, shall we?

My mother came from Grimsby! But left for London during the blitz! Sometimes go back to Cleethorpes and all looks a bit left behind after Edwardian prosperity. My great grandfather moved there to build ships. The problem now is real regeneration and my opinion is that EU funding may have helped but perhaps we need a real change of government and economic thinking that can support local and not just global.

What complete and utter rubbish, and it’s very insulting to call the people of Grimsby idiots or plonkers when in fact the hypocrisy is all yours. The PEOPLE of Grimsby who voted for Brexit, but it’s FOOD INDUSTRY BOSSES who are asking for exemption.
You owe the people of Grimsby an apology.

Total prats! I was never inclined towards the Common Market which “evolved” into the EU, but after doing my own research I left UKIP and voted remain – mainly because I’m socialist inclined in my thinking. These people should have done their homework and voted for everyone instead of their own “self interests” and now they want special exemptions? Despite the wastage within the EU, we were better off as Internationalists because right wing governments(and that includes Labour under Blair)let are manufacturing base, our light and heavy industry, our farming and fishing, our thriving small businesses, our steel and shipbuilding industries, fall behind- all devoid of funding and investment with tax incentives(instead successive governments gave favours to the multi national corporates and consortiums) now we haven’t the means to trade independently without the trade agreements we had within the EU. But unless a referendum shows we want another crack at the “in/out ” debate, then by democratic means, we have already determined our future. We cannot change the vote without overwhelming support(70% minimum)of the electorate calling for a new referendum, so we’re stuck with the decision of those who thought we would be rid of the “foreigners” or thought the £300 million was ever a reality and would be available as funding for the NHS. Idiot people wanted the foreigners out and were willing to cut off their own noses to spite their faces when asked how we were going to staff the NHS without said “bloody foreigners”. Waking up now to the realities of the lies offered as a reason to leave the EU, whatever it’s failings, is all too little too late. Whilst I do think we should have tighter immigration laws and constraints, staying in the EU would have been a better option, provided that Union wasn’t dictated to by the US! (When will people wake up to the fact that the US only ever serves it’s own interests?)
The mentality of so many Brits these days seems to be dumbed down from the crap propaganda they read from the MSM – time for the MSM to be buried in a deep hole rather than be allowed to bury truth and facts as they have done for so many years.
The US is selling the EU, at a profit, gas they bought from Russia while still maintaining the sanctions against Russia which prevent the EU from buying that same gas(the US just circumnavigates it’s own sanctions, but insists we abide by them!)
We are a nation of too many “numbnuts”.

excellent post mohandeer ,very clear insight into the worlds market place (so to speak) and I agree with all you wrote.
A few other adds would be the EU was becoming its own US type bully via neo politics taking over (a direct assault via the media was certainly over 60 percent responsible for this ) and now they are unravelling faster than I can keep up with they have nowhere to run now except to ”in your face fascism”

I’m one of those not allowed to vote in the referendum but who will be most affected by the decision to leave the EU. Resident in Europe the outlook is dodgy for us, no-one is making a commitment to continue the social provisions, (healthcare, pensions and benefit delivery) that made living here possible. No-one is explaining how we will be able to return and get housed in the UK. I’ll call those who did this to me with their vote any darn thing I like.

It’s all right for a rich cunt like you to sit on your arse all day calling ordinary working class people hypocrites, you don’t have to go out every day trying to find work because the British fishing industry has been totally fucked by the EU. You’re siding with the processing company bosses who import all the fish instead of backing our industry, so you’re the fucking hypocrite here.

Its not about who’s what really (although I see the insult to the working fishers, which isnt fair) the EU should indeed not have been allowed to destroy British industries like they were but that was our governments allowing it (self serving being the key).
Staying in and fighting our government to be ”OUR” government was the best option ,this is as mohandeer mentioned a totally self fuelled thing and for every win for one industry post brexit there is a loss for another.
I get it but it wont help while our (lol) gov will support no one but their benefactors, and those benefactors couldn’t give a rats arse about the Grimsby or anyone else..they care only about profit so…what about lighthouses ,coast gaurds etc and all the people that are not here to keep fishers safe .. all this stuff needs paying for as well and to pay we need to earn ,to earn we need to sell…hence the industries are asking for exemption on the grounds it needs a market to pay for all the extras that goes with fishing.
If brexit means we are isolated from european markets across the board and we just self serve I hope a lot of people have a lot of savings and they plan to share them .

ps …just read this..
TM wants it written into law the day and time out. Sounds good right for brexit voters anyway ,well its all about nationalism isnt it ,and if/when they pull this one off ,you have a full scale private dictatorship .
Why ,well because the party to go all out out needed to be the one supporting nationalised industries ..and well even the infants know tory policy by now . Dickens ,Thatcher here we come.
‘God bless you gov’ ……’.bah humbug,’ ,’please sir more gruel and exemptions’.
Practice makes perfect 🙂
shouldn’t the shipyards be reopening or leyland motors ?

It wasn’t the EU who who interfered with our fishing industry. Our government allowed “big business” to dictate who was paid what for their catch and the small vessels were priced out and jobless. Why would someone back a government that would do that to ordinary folk trying to make a living? Why blame the EU for a government preferred policy which served only those with profit monopolies instigated by their own government. Thatcher did the same with farming and I wasn’t a socialist then, but I can understand the written word and follow our own history!

well ,there you go ..I knew thatcher came up with the stratagy to allow the very rich to play gods (amongst many many many other things) but did think the EU were also playing ball with her in the slice up of our peoples businesses….they definate ended up as bad as the tories (as did Blair) but ok I accept that it wasn’t the intention of the EU to become that.
Lots of positives for staying in the club if only the world in general can rid itself of tory party politics as it’s just rich gangstars who are money counting ill that join that corrupt show..republicans in Usa are the same…but opposition parties and vote fiddling in the 80’s made the whole shower a pick a gangster parade. Still the left wing were just as bad in the 70’s ,hence we got a Thatcher ,so no smoke without fire either way .

sadly there is a mentality within the Brexit voters which cannot save face by admitting they were duped. Others were not wanting to support farage etc the tories, or neo- liberalism and so voted leave the EU as lexiteers. This group are shame faced in that they too were duped. A 3rd Faction were entirely unaware effects intended by Brexit, and voted with good intentions to rid the UK of tories and austerity. Some were misled and others effectively naive of political strategies and deceptions thereby voting for EU rejection because they were unaware where african countries were located ie not in europe.
However the salient questions now are: do these factions support Brexit now, and whether the narrow brexit victory is a true will of the people juging by numbers who voted leave, and the advisory capacity of EU law is it safe to assume Brexit is an acceptable as a majority now? and during the period just after the referendum,?
Its highly likely tories faked supporting and were in reality hoping that Brexit or Leave voters prevailed. This would enable the tories to make a power grab and Cameron avoid responsibilty for acute divisions which are destined to break up the UK forever.
All comments welcomed.
