Very worryingly, today the NHS was hit by a cyber attack.
This is because the NHS is so underfunded that when Microsoft stopped support for Windows XP – the operating system which most NHS hospitals use – they didn’t have enough money to update their systems.
Much more worryingly – our nuclear Trident submarines also run on a version of Windows XP:
Which gives a whole new meaning to the blue screen of death …

I have been led to believe that the Min Of Defense pay Microsoft lots and lots of money for continued product support for Trident X-People. Any more money for Trident and we will all starve to death instead of being Nuked..

microsoft are so rich they not only probably own the bombs but likely pick the targets ,,only fair that they should get the call of duty armageddon version as an xbox 1 exclusive.

Windows 2000 and XP are actually quite good, stable and strong (ha ha!) operating systems. I still have a server which has been running Windows 2000 continuously since it was relesed without any trouble. The problems arise if you connect it to the Internet and allow untrained people to use it for personal email and browsing. This is not (I hope) the case in submarines!

If you really want to use Windows for a critical system, then XP is by far the most reliable, much more so than any of the more recent versions. The only problem is that you have to pay Microsoft for updates, but it’s more stable and cheaper than replacing with Windows 10 and the faster PCs needed to run it. Presumably the NHS did neither. What the MoD is doing in their submarines is anybody’s guess, but if they’re not connected to the Internet and the crews aren’t allowed to bring USB sticks or disks onto the vessel then malware isn’t a problem.

Nobody seems to be saying it, but this is Microsoft’s fault. If they had carried on providing automatic free updates for XP instead of charging for them, this attack would not have happened. If you buy a product you are entitled to have any design faults fixed for free. I think Bill Gates should pay for the updates out of his own pocket. He can afford it.

this is so much BS … I worked on this project and its all embedded systems built on transputer boards (EPROMS) in rack systems under ADA compilation… why would u need a GUI for a command line OS .. oh and BTW I was the one that used to fix ALL the windows PC’s at BAe Naval systems at the time…

This blog is obviously trying to make a case that nuclear submarines shouldn’t use Windows XP. Would you care to tell us which operating system would be better, and why? If not, the criticism is completely empty.
