Former Thatcher minister Lord Tebbit yesterday criticised peers during the Brexit debate in the House of Lords for “thinking of nothing but the rights of foreigners.”
Yet hypocritical Tebbit is quite happy to use migrant carers on minimum wages – in other words “foreigners” from countries like the Czech Republic, Slovakia and South Africa – to look after his sick wife Margaret.
One of the carers Lord Tebbit employed was Czech citizen Marketa Ziskova – who has agreed to describe her experiences working for the Tebbits in her own words:
My name is Marketa, I am Czech. I lived 9 years in the UK, worked and studied in UK. I returned home in 2013.
I worked for Lord Tebbit in the summer of 2007- for 3 months. They advertised on Gumtree. So I applied for the job. I went for an interview. At the time they had a Slovak girl working there, she was going on holiday in Slovakia so they needed cover for that time. At the time they lived close to Horsham, a small village. When I came for the interview they had pictures on the wall – Lord Tebbit and the Queen…old pictures, from Thatcher’s time… so then I found out who he is.
I got the job and started: his wife was disabled after the bombing in Brighton. Tebbit was my employer, I still have references from him and the payslips. I worked with his wife, helped her with everything – washing, dressing, hair, cooking, I went even into Norfolk with them. There was me, a girl from Slovakia and another girl from South Africa. But we worked single-handed shifts, which if you have to lift somebody without a hoist is not allowed I think. But we lifted her many times during the day.
They always had foreign carers – perhaps no-one English would agree to do that. Not for that amount of money! We had to eat with them, but we could not drink anything except water. They always had wine for dinner. We had separate food in the fridge, ours was Tesco economy. We always had to stay and sleep in their house even if we were supposed to have time off. We were paid minimum wage. We also had to call them Lord Tebbit and Lady Tebbit. It felt like they owned us.

He is a stoat of the first water. I feel sorry for what happened to them but it didn’t make mush of a change to their attitudes towards others, did it? Thank you for sharing your experiences. Are there any more exploited people willing to expose similar treatment at the hands of other Tories?

I find this so sad in so many ways that I can’t possibly share it on any other platform.. If this is true, Margaret has been paralysed for over 25 years and, what is worse, married to “on your bike” Tebbit for about 60 years and now receiving the cheapest care possible. Ah the legacy of Thatcher lives on in the meanness of the Conselfservative ethos.
I really hope this is “fake news”, but I suspect not.

care 24/7 hour costs are around £1000 per week at professional care home level and easily affordable by millionaire tebbitt
iv’e known most mp’s and lords since 1966 and i can tell you now iv’e never anyone who has came across as a decent person
most add that and me be a servant to them. They are in the main very mean and my daughter always turns them down when they ask her to work for them as she’s in Westminster politics as a researcher
well at least she has integrity so all is not lost

I am not at all surprised to hear this. Norman “on your bike” Tebbit is a political dinosaur, who, politically, is only good for a laugh. On a purely human level, his loyalty to his wife, a victim of the Brighton bombing, is remarkable, but, on the same level, he learned no wider lesson from it.

Those of us who are old enough remember what a nasty piece of work he was when he was in government. It seems nothing changes.

I also work for minimum wage, with NO meals or lodging thrown in. Don’t really see what the story is here.

No surprise there for me but this is shocking behaviour from a very nasty Tory who obviously considers his wife & himself are better than the people who work for them and treating them so much worse than they live themselves. This is why Tories are as nasty as they are….this is why we must throw them out of government ….

The point that is being missed is the reference to “foreigners” and the manner in which he spoke. Are British expats subjected to the same sneering references by French, Italian, Spanish etc politicos? Hypocrisy is rampant amongst the political classes, none more so than Tories. I deactivated my twitter account sick of sniping, abusive jibing and harassment for expressing mildly left of centre public sector supportive views, ironically, all that came from Tory supporters, Kippers were reasonable enough in my experience. One buffoon Tory supporter, who is not even anonymous, and therefore easily traced, even claimed that he had “reported” me to his local cops for alleged harassment and stalking after months of sub tweeting about me and schoolyard abuse, nothing threatening but puerile “trumpisms”.

Like it or not, Tebbit is of political importance. He sits in the H of L, gets invited on to tv programmes and is a constant reminder of how Thatcher and her playmates permanently poisoned our country with their spiteful ideology.

Is this a surprise! Lord Tebbit’s remarks are irresponsible and will only add to anti EU feelings and race hate
Lord Tebbit should be told to apologise for his dreadful remarks as he has potentially stirred a difficult and dangerous situation
He has made me feel a foreigner although I was born here as if I needed to be reminded about discrimination faced
Thank you Lord Tebbit

Christine Cullen – You’re citing Thatcher as a reason why this story is politically relevant? I think you just proved my point!

Perhaps a payslip or similar would be proof of the authenticity of the story?

It cost him about £1,000 per week in 2007. He could have put her in a home for less, but he wanted her to stay at home with him. Laudable.

Tom, it seems that what you REALLY can’t stand is criticism of the political reasons for writing what you do, and you obsessively delete any such criticism as soon as you see it. Perhaps you should reflect for a moment that maybe that’s exactly what SHOULD be discussed openly on forums such as this?
[Endlessly boring discussions about me will be deleted for the unforgivable crime of … being boring. I never delete criticisms of what I say. This should not be about me, that’s boring. Stick to the issue at hand, criticise all you like, and all will be well. Oh, and please stop sock-puppeting under different names. You’re being obsessive. Again] – TOM
