UPDATE: Debenhams now claim the soaking of a homeless man by a store security guard who then laughed and said the man deserved it – was “an unfortunate accident”.

For those asking, it was Debenhams in Portsmouth.
Text version:
So to some of you you know my predicament of being homeless. But yesterday morning I woke up feeling wet socks and clothes thought I might of left a bottle open or something. I then get told by the security of Debenhams I have 10 minutes which was fine. But as he walked away he said enjoy your water bed. So I bite back as it being boxing day. So I then begin to pack up my bedding to then discover that the secunity guard from the inside of debenhams had flooded all my bedding. And ruined clothing food dog bedding public donations brought by the kind members of public. So a few of us went into speak to management didn’t do anything apparently it’s acceptable to bullying the homeless and assault them while sleeping. And when confronting the guard I got told I deserve it …. what someone deserves to be homeless. Can I get opinions on this matter.

So if you cannot afford accommodation you should give up your means of communication. This no joke as it is the same as criticizing refugees for having mobile phones. People should ALL be forced to experience homelessness before being allowed into positions of power over others…. it is not nice.

Pink Agendist: Free WiFi is everywhere these days, in case you hadn’t noticed; and if you’re suggesting he should sell his only means of communication, what would that achieve? The price of a second-hand low end smartphone probably wouldn’t even buy him a night in a Travelodge these days.
If you think living on the streets is anything to joke about, belittle or scorn, you’re a sociopath and I pity you the meaningless existence you must lead.

Soaking any Rough Sleeper at this time of year is unthinkable, uncharitable and Dangerous. Hypothermia is a very real killer, claimed a few lives this winter among the homeless. It claims lives amongst the Elderly in poorly heated homes so to do that to a fellow human and risk his health just for what?.
Debenhams creates an image, of warmth and quality. I can well imagine the Directors have already disciplined the store manager, the company with the security contract would have replaced the guard this shift.
That is what a responsible Company does. They are well aware of Gerald Ratners Curse and would do anything to avoid that.
If Debenhams have just laughed it off, relying on it’s Tory friends in the media to scotch this then they sort of deserve Ratners curse. May your stockholder’s desert you, your customers despise you for being so cheap as to let this happen.
Ratners curse, destroyed the company by taking the piss out his cheapest earrings, compared to a BLT sandwich which was dearer. Google that. The basis is, it’s the little things that trip you up, because when you fall, you are on your own. Your friendly, generations long reputation, gone because some idiot employed another idiot and in the 21st century, Stupidity really is more dangerous than evil.

I guarantee, obnoxious security guard is not employed by Debenhams but a third party contractor … regardless to that, for another human being to be so cruel, unempathetic and insensitive is incomprehensible to me … however, I cannot understand how someone can be homeless yet have access to a mobile device?? This for me is a contradiction in terms … can someone help me understand this??

Totally disgraceful, we had a homeless guy living with us for a while and I learned a lot about what they go through on a daily basis, being wet is a disaster for them, as drying their clothes and all that – just not easy. Anybody who doubts it, try it for a day!

It’s sickening to think that people believe that being homeless means you can be abused the security guard should be dealt with by the law accordingly and the manager should face an investigation for allowing staff to act in this way, shame on Debenhams

Pink Agendist and Alexia most public libraries and many drop in centres have free access to computers & the internet, many of us donate old phones, tablets etc to charities that help the homeless and others in need. Access to Facebook and homelessness are not incompatible. Reading this sort of report and thinking “how could he get on Facebook if he’s homeless” rather than being disgusted by the actions of the security guard is, however, incompatible with possessing a shred of basic human decency.

Karma’s a wonderful thing and those who treat others badly just because they think they are better than them deserve all that’s coming to them, it doesn’t cost anything to be kind to someone who is down on their luck, they could very well be in the same situation one day. there is nothing guaranteed in this life.

The Pink Agendist, née Mr. Merveilleux seems to be rather full of himself. So soon after Christmas too. Homeless people do have access to free internet at the library and many other places too. For shame!

Not a shop I use often – certainly won’t use again – homelessness is a scandal in a country as wealthy as this one and a malaise symptomatic of everything which has gone wrong since 2010 and got much worse since the Tories cheated their way to election victory in 2015; I would like to pour water over that callous security guard and leave him out in subzero temperatures to freeze to death. I’d like to do much the same to Debenham’s senior management and May’s Cabinet. Really sorry about this horrible experience you’ve had – hope you’re dry now and that things get better in the new year.

The Security Guard should be sacked instantly, as he has no authority to act outside the sho, let alone in this vindictive manner. Someone with the skill to do so should start an online petition demanding this through Change.org or similar

This just about sums up the view that the “haves” hold about the “have nots”. It is about time they realised that not EVERYONE on the streets is there because of alcohol drugs crime etc, but due to life circumstances. Often people who are on the streets do end up turning to crime, so as to get into a place that offers shelter of some sort – even if it is a prison cell. This security guard needs to be face disciplinary action at the least, and dismissal for misconduct and bringing Debenhams into disrepute (unless that is their policy – which they have failed to inform us of) I for one will never set foot inside any of their stores again, until action has been seen to be taken.

This is not acceptable at all.
If the management there wanted an area cleared then a polite word and a chance to do so would have been the better and more respectful way to do it..people do not choose to be homeless often it’s just due to circumstances beyond their controll.
What I’m wondering is with so many churches locked up at night why aren’t they used as temporary shelters at least over the festive season..also synagogues mosques and temples ..surely the messages from all these institutions is one of peace charity and kindness…

Disgusting. Where was the debenhams? This is surely assault and theft of the homeless people’s goods. I don’t like big shops. Eg. debenhams, John Lewis Liverpool 1( security are threatening to cyclists and remove and destroy locks/bikes without owner’s permission). You should press charges. The corporation and its staff should be punished.

To pour water on people in this weather is very cruel… and inviting if illness and in the worst case death. I am a long distance walker. I know what it is to get wet to the bone and not have anything dry to put on… albeit in summer. This is not an ethical way to deal with the issue of homelessness… worst of all the judgemental attitude of the perpetrator. How does anyone deserve that?

For anyone questioning this man having a mobile phone, many people get theirs replaced regularly on contract and actually GIVE their old phones away to people who otherwise may not have one and wifi is free in many places although I don’t see how ownership of a mobile phone had anything to do with being homeless. I, for, one won’t set foot in Debenhams again until they rectify what they have done. Which Debenhams branch did this happen at so that we, the public, can complain yo the store directly over your treatment.

Disgusting! How is it that there are those who have no compassion for those less fortunate, and who obviously also have little gratitude for what they themselves also have; they cannot be thankful and treat another so shamefully.
And why on earth in this day and age, and in a country that is one of the wealthier in the world, do we have so many homeless anyway? It really is not good enough for a modern, forward thinking society at all.

My flat is directly opposite a branch of Debenhams, and I would be inclined to view them negatively because of their apparent policy of never switching their lights off. This story simply confirms that I will never visit that establishment again.

The content of the posts on here reflect my disgust at such bullying behaviour, in fact such gratuitously bullying behaviour being exhibited. Regrettably there are self satisfied comfortable individuals posting on twitter and Facebook who would condone the “security man’s” behaviour…

The action of Debenhams and/or their representative is despicable. Anyone unsympathetic is also heartless and despicable. This would be true at any time of the year but even more so in the season of goodwill.

This is assault, but unfortunately not uncommon, a security guard at Norwich’s Castle Mall. He was retrained and The Mall made a large donation to a local grassroots homeless charity.

I’m disgusted. If you don’t want to help someone just do nothing. Don’t make their situation even worse. I hope debenhams do the right thing and fire that callous dirtball. I hope they make amends to you and ideally to all homeless people. The UK needs a clear message that this is not how we do things.

Pink agendist, if you were local you would know that many many lovely Portsmouth people have been helping the homeless and providing things that may just make their lives a little more bearable, including mobile phones and other useful items to keep contact. The pcc team have been in contact with Debenhams and will not let it drop, their actions are inhumane and degrading. I expect you are also the type to bully people like myself who have an invisible illness…. Drop back into your little hole of elitism. As my wise old grandmother used to say, if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all.

Hi, I can’t find any reference to this in the ‘mainstream’ media covering that area.
Whilst I don’t doubt that the incident happened, is there any independent corroboration that would enable is to force the police to investigate what was clearly not just a criminal assault but arguably a life threatening action in view of the cold temperatures and the fact that a homeless man would most likely be in a state of poor health.
If you can identify credible sources then we should start a campaign to put mass pressure on the police to investigate and to encourage the victim to put in a formal complaint to them.
It’s all very well posting on Debenhams facebook page (as I have) but without proof Debenhams will deny it and remove anything they don’t like as fast as it goes up, and will no doubt threaten legal action for libel.

The action taken by the security guard could constitute a criminal offence. Please consider reporting the incident to the police as they are taking assaults and crimes against the homeless seriously. The man needs to learn that being cruel is criminal.
The police may also be able to help put you in touch with charities that can help you get your life going.

It appears strange that most comments are about the phone. Not the fact that while asleep a Debenhams employee decide to go and pour water over a homeless personal belonging, for what a laugh, was he doing what hus employers wanted. Either way it is disgraceful Debenhams manager should do something about it maybe replacement goods?

At first, I thought this was unfair to tag Debenhams, that it was likely the act of one person. It turned out it was the security guard. But that the manager took no action made me angry. It takes a special kind of cruel to treat someone like this. Nobody ‘deserves’ this for being homeless, except perhaps that security guard and manager.

Pink Agendist has obviously never heard of libraries – which I used a lot to get online when I was homeless (you need to be able to look for somewhere to live somehow – even if it’s only a homeless hostel).

This should be reported to the police as crime against this man his security and personal safety was compromised and THESE WERE HIS ONLY POSSESSIONS AND his health was seriously put at risk by the thuggish coward of Debenhams they must be very proud of HIM . THIS IS HAPPENING A LOT I TALKED TO A YOUNG MAN IN CAMBER WELL BEFORE CHRISTMAS WHO WAS ALSO EXPERIENCED SIMILAR TREATMENT EVEN HAD HIS FEW BELONGS SET ALIGHT AND URINETED UPON . you people do know that even in the wilds of africa where they literally have nothing more than a mud hut actually still have a mobile phone. everyone has one, not everyone has a home tho. You ever seen loads of african houses painted in stupid colours of the mobile phone providers, those poor run down shit houses are selling airtime to try to afford a life. tons of homeless people africa don’t have a home but have a phone so any argument you people put forward about him having communication but living homeless is absolutely pointless. cheap mobile phones wouldn’t even get you over £10 these days. He’s still sadly homeless and has still sadly been assaulted by a bastard debenhams member of staff!

I’d really like to know which Debenhams store this was and have a word with the management myself.
Perhaps they might take more notice of someone that isn’t homeless and has a good job and could be about to spend money in their store.
Shouldn’t happen that way but we all know it does.
And they can go on about security being supplied by a third party contractor but that guard is still representing the store, is working on their premises and so responsibility for this despicable behaviour cannot be shrugged off.
Debenhams have a reputation to uphold and so at the very least need to provide this person with replacements for his damaged possessions, provide a hot meal and a public apology, sadly I do t think that they will

It’s a long time since I shopped at Debenhams anywhere, but this made me think that I would not even go into one of their stores to use the toilet. They count every entry as foot-fall. Disgusting behaviour by one member of staff rubs off on all, and the lack of action from the Management just makes it worse. Grrr

I would lodge a complaint with Debenhams HQ and the police for damages-if you did this to anyone else it would be criminal damage, potentially assault. You do not deserve that or to be homeless either. Make a stand.

What a miserable individual that security guard is! In addition, I’d be very concerned if that is the type of behaviours which form the culture of staff who work there. Debenhams should be very concerned that this is happening and will reflect this company and not the sly individual of a security guard! I’m sorry to hear that. We all came into this world the same way, and we’ll all leave the same way. And we are all equal. Either that security guard is an absolute idiot who wouldn’t know a conscience if it slapped him in the chops AND his peers are not far behind for allowing him to get away with this. If it is the Portsmouth store it should be very easy to find who did this. Debenhams will not want adverse publicity, particularly at the time of year. However they must be made to accept responsibility publicly. Firing the security guard solves nothing. Make him sleep rough for a while during the winter and see what it’s like.

Words fail me. What has our country come to? It is not acceptable to bully, harass or attack someone who is homeless. Debenhams should be ashamed of themselves. Perhaps their management should try a night or two rough sleeping to see what it’s like.

Good morning ! I am so sorry to hear that and I feel very ashamed of such a horrible behaviour. I have a membership card from debenhams and will definitely resign. Those kind of behaviours are just not acceptable.
If you would like some kind help and assistance in any matter please come to a Crisis unit. They will refer you to a centre which is open until the 30th. You can eat, sleep, have a shower, have your hair cut, your dog checked, etc, etc.

This is appalling. I personally think that the employee of Debenhams should be reprimanded. I can’t believe how one human can treat another.
Why is this country allowing so many people to be homeless…? It’s a national disgrace…… Any one of us could find ourselves in a vunerable situation due to lack of money. Let’s hope and pray that this society of today start turning things around…….we can’t go on indefinitely turning a blind eye.
Hope the man had some help with his wet clothes etc….and the Debenhams employee has a guilty conscience.

Debenhamso moralso have changed over the years. So much so that I decided after an incident with an order I placed this year that I would look elsewhere in future when shopping. Having heard this story makes me really angry, let’s hope that security man never has to experience being homeless and jobless. What a heartless person he must be and as for management allowing this behaviour or being at the back of this its disclgraceful. Debenhams are hanging on a loose end business wise and after this story there going to pay for this as loyal customers will shop elsewhere if they have any respect for humans. I sure will be. Look we never know wat predicament our lives could be in . Wat if these people were one day to find themselves homeless. I wouldn’t like to be sleeping in the streets in Winter then to blatantly ruin someone’s bedding to throw water all over is childish churlish and an act of gross vandalism. These are human beings and do not deserve this. Debenhams needs to get rid of this person. People like that donot deserve a job, they should be homeless, if only for long enough to experience a treatment like this. What a nasty creature! If he stays on the job me and my family did our ast shoppings at Debenhams. We visit Malta every year and we always go there in the Tigne Point shopping centre to buy us (quite a lot of) stuff from their shop. But it will end here, this is unacceptable! It was Commercial Road branch in Portsmouth. I feel so angry about this and so sorry for the Man . How dare the security Guard do this to anybody, let alone a ppo homeless man. The Guard probably felt like the BIG man, but instead it has shown everybody what a weak bully boy he really is. This really is disgusting. It is unfortunately the case that no one wants homeless people near their place of business and just assume they are bad people and have created their own situation.
That said it has never been acceptable to abuse a person, homeless or otherwise, and quite why a security guard should feel the need to lol down at the homeless and debinhams manager for condoning it is absolutely disgusting and they should have disciplined this employee, at the very least, and reimbursed you for the damage and abuse that has been endured

What an absolute bastard. I’d personally drop him if I could. If it’s any consolation at all my second son who is a DISABLED youth worker, has mild CP. ON November 4th he slept outside with 200 others in the grounds of Manchester Cathedral for the Booth Centre, Homeless charity in Manchester. He personally raised over £800 and the grand total was nearly £60,000. Hope things work out well for you.

Debenhams don’t employ outside security. They have a Loss Prevention team which deals with security and locking/unlocking etc. They are “in house”, and because they are in house they don’t have to be regulated by the SIA who most certainly would take someone’s license away were they to find out that this sort of behaviour had been carried out by a licensed individual. And a licensed individual would be acutely aware of this, hence why I’m inclined to believe it’s come from inside. Having said that I would also say that this is only one side of the story. Having been both a Debenhams LP employee and also an SIA registered door supervisor it sounds more like something personal than a directive from management. Maybe there is history between the two individuals relating to their circumstances, as again speaking from experience- the two situations often have cause to cone in contact with each other, and at those times tension is often running high.

Dear Russell, That must have been a terrible shock for you. I suggest that you go to the Citizens Advice Bureau as soon as you can. Ask for an urgent appointment if there’s no drop in service, and ask if you have any legal redress. I wonder if you could take action against the individual who caused the damage to your belongings.

I very rarely go into Debenhams.Some years ago I got accused of stealing a £4 pair of boys shorts. Theven security staff approached me not outside Debenhams but round the corner. I told them it was hot so I just put shorts back and where to find them.Eventually I just emptied my bag on the pavement. They just said we thought you’d pinched them.No apology,no helping me pick stuff up.
In fact they should have stopped me by Debenham doors not half way down the street. I understand how nasty they are.
It’s a vile thing to do to a homeless person. It’s this Gov that’s making people so heartless to the vulnerable. Let’s hope karma bites that guy on his scummy ass.

Jessica Domino, he had a mobile as it provides security. A mobile phone can cost just £10 a month. It means a contact number for family, if applying for work or benefits and a general connection with the world. Rental in Portsmouth is going to be £300 a month, so a lot more than the cost of that mobile.

Have you not picked up on the fact that it may have been donated, or that he may be using the computer in a public library where he may have access to a FB account? Being homeless does not mean you are uneducated or without a sense of enterprise or do not belong to a community, it means that you are without a home. And these days the best way to monitor your chances of finding a home or a job, and to communicate with others, is online. I just feel sad that people feel they have the power to abuse another human being. I long for the day when everybody gives each other the respect they deserve. It would cost nothing to speak kindly to the homeless person involved here and give him time and even help to move his belongings. What a terrible plight to be on the streets in the first place. I can only hope that the management of this debenhams were not aware of the situation at the time, they should have invited the man in and given him clothing, bedding and a meal, I hope they will now invite him back. The man should be sacked and reported to the police.
And with regard to the mobile phone, do society feel that a homeless person should have nothing! We don’t know what led to him becoming homeless.

I find it very hard to understand how anyone could treat another human being this way. The security guard may have his own security issues and feels better for it. Very shallow if this is the case

What the guard did was wrong. Morally and in law. I doubt if he was acting under instruction of Debenhams, or even works for it. I hope the people of Portsmouth go into the store and bring this to the managers attention.

No one person can ever understand or comprehend any situation; Until they have lived it themselves. Compassion comes from the deep understanding of knowing how it feels.When a person has experience this, they come out of it with true humility. Humbleness is an attitude that few people have these days. When you have experience hopelessness, loss, despair, and total uncaring attitude from others. You either try to not to give up, or you give up. Treating the homeless or poor without an understanding of their situation. Only makes the lives of these people far worse. Helping those in need and having humility while doing it is what everyone should be doing.

People are also leaving negative reviews on Portsmouth’s Debenhams Facebook page, myself included. Are there any homeless charities, help grouped who can organise boycotts and demos outside Debenhams highlighting this. Imagine Debenhams reaction if a load of homeless people and supporters gathered outside to let customers knows what has happened. I’m sure there are anti austerity groups/political groups in the area who’d join in.

There are so many ways a homeless person might be posting on a phone. Phones are a safety need these days, not a luxury. Someone may have gifted him the phone. He might be using it on a wifi hotspot, charging it in public areas… Further you can access facebook in libraries and all sorts of other places.
He is involved with a local homeless charity, who also posted about this incident, as one of their volunteers witnessed the aftermath as he tried to clean up. They may have given him access to post.
So basically, perhaps nobody else picked up on him using a phone because we’re not cynical and always looking for the catch?

This is sickening and I’m horrified that anyone should be so cruel and spiteful. I, for one, will be writing to complain to the Management at Debenham’s (I hope others do so too) and, unless you are invited back for an apology and compensation ( maybe via this site), I will never set foot in Debenham’s again.
This country is becoming unacceptably intolerant and uncaring and ordinary folk have to speak out for those who are experiencing difficulties and feeling vulnerable.

okay, about to make myself really unpopular here….how can he afford to keep a dog and an internet connection via phone/tablet while homeless? NO, the staff member should not have done what they did – it was a disgusting display of lack of humanity and never in a heartbeat would I ever condone it. But I do question stories like this for purely practical reasons

Without internet this man has absolutely NO chance. You can get a connection for £5 a month. His dog will be helped with donations. Try sleeping out there for a night Claire! Homelessness is becoming more prevalent. Even the so called ‘middle classes’ are starting to be affected. Could be YOU next. Would your dog and your internet (free at libraries BTW) not give you a reason to keep on living, as clearly people don’t, do they? They are too busy picking holes in the poor man’s plight. .He could be ex soldier with PTSD, an abused young adult, a mental health sufferer or divorced and lost his home. Get a conscience! Do something to help. The last thing they need is folk like YOU!

His phone could av been given 2 him or something he had b4 he was made homeless and he has only got 2 top it up with £10 a myth wen he runs out or maybe somebody pays the top up fee 4 him so they can check up on him but it also helps being able 2 av contact details 4 job interview,s, accommodation charitys, there r so meny resends y he should av this phone. Leave ur phone at home 1day and c how difficult life gets without it

What is wrong with this country!!! No longer do we have any compassion for people less fortunate than we may be but we now resort to humiliation and bullying of the less fortunate. We are on a backward slide to Dickensian time’s when people even children were left to die of cold and starvation in the street’s. GET A FLAMING GRIP so called bigwigs. Free wifi is plentiful, so anyone with the cheapest and most basic of smartphones on a Pay As You Go plan (a possession that may well pre-date the person’s homelessness) can find internet access if they want it. There are also libraries and other community hubs where a homeless person may be able to access the internet for free. Remember that if you’re trying to get back to a normal life, the internet is not some decadent luxury – it’s a tool that is increasingly hard to live without if you want a place to live, a job or access to benefits.
As for the dog, what expenses do you think they incur? Most of the homeless dog owners I’ve spoken to say that they’re inundated with people offering to give them food for the dog (far more than will offer food for a human). There are charities that can help with any vet treatment required, or the pets go without (just as the humans forego medical treatment). Given that dogs provide company, love and protection, a lot of people seem to think they’re worth keeping. And again, the dog may well pre-date the person’s homelessness.
Try chatting with the next homeless person you encounter. Buy them a cup of tea and let them talk. You’ll learn a lot by listening to them, and your questions about practicalities will be answered.

It now appears that the last thing that a person gives up is their smartphones. In many cases it is the only connection that remains for them to family or friends.
I am sure that most people will remember the media pictures of refugees landing in Greece with nothing to support them almost immediately on their smartphones to let family know that they had arrived safely.
I only use that as an up to date example of the fact that smartphones have become the most indispensable tool for the 21st century

Shocked and disgusted at the treatment of this homeless person and their companion. Truth is we are all 3 bad decisions away from homelessness ourselves. So have a thought for those less fortunate than yourselves. I’ll be boycotting Debenhams from now on. I do hope someone or some organisation were able to give you some fresh clothes and supplies for your dog.

Most of us are 3 paychecks away from homelessness, it’s frightening that such a society that once prided itself on socialist values and sticking up for the underdog could act in such a disgusting way, especially at Christmas time. Claire, dog food doesn’t cost much, but rent does. Foregoing his dog wouldn’t save him enough money for rent! Also, for rough sleepers & homeless a dog can act like an alarm system and much needed protection, helping make them feel a tiny bit safer in their highly unsafe circumstanves

To those asking how he can afford a phone and internet connection, libraries offer use of computers and Internet for free. This is often the only way some homeless people have if keeping in touch with anyone. And those who do have a phone, they have often been donated by various homeless charities and are often PAYG, so they stay connected by scrimping their meagre pennies they get from begging, and charge them up at shelters, and use their wifi.
Don’t begrudge the homeless what few “luxuries” they have. Unless you are in their exact situation, you don’t know what they go through to keep what little they have.

Perspective.
When one is sitting in a well heated room, secure with food at hand and resources nearby, it is often easy to say what people could and should be doing.
I find the following analogy might be useful for helping some people comprehend what it is like to be homeless imho.
Imagine your on the titanic.
Surrounded by plush luxuries everywhere you turn.
Within a minute you hit an iceberg.
You hear a whisper a rumour, but think…no this ship won’t sink, we’re perfectly fine…
Then the ship starts tilting and you decide to head for the lifeboat bays.
All the lifeboats are full, because you were convinced the boat would not sink.
Long story short you end up in an icy cold ocean. Fighting for your life.
Now unless you were some-sort of xen master, chances are your not thinking very far into the future, and certainly not about trivial things like what clothes you are going to buy when you decide to next go shopping etc.
You are thinking about what is happening to you at that point in time, and how fucking freezing cold you are, and how you must use the majority of your mind and will power, simply to stay above the surface of the water.
Someone on a lifeboat is shouting at you, you try to swim towards them, hoping for a helping hand, but all you hear is someone putting you down, calling you a loser, you clutch out for a bit of driftwood anything that might help keep you afloat.
Your in that cold dark ocean for hours.
The daylight breaks..and you finally get fished out of the ocean by Gods good grace and a nearby passing fishing trawler that has heard the distress call over the radio and decided to put their livelihoods on the line and lose their own revenue/wealth generation, for a period to answer humanities call and help with a rescue operation.
TLDR: Be kind. You never know when the tables might turn.

Debenhams need to take some responsibility for the antisocial actions of that security guard, and deal with this matter appropriately. Boycott Debenhams. Homelessness can happen to anyone, many are just one job loss, relationship breakdown, illness or disability away from the downward spiral that can leas to homelessness. These heartless, ignorant people who did this ought go spend some time working for a homelessness charity, they need their eyes opened and a massive dose of compassion. Something sadly lacking in our society today.

A dreadful story and I truly hope this Security Guard gets what is coming to him through the law of Karma. I will boycott Debenhams in the future. Such an appalling lack of Humanity. Let us all call for Debenhams to make a massive donation to a Homeless charity just to redress the balance as well as sacking the security guard. This security guard should be named and shamed. It’s an absolute disgrace that ANY human being can treat another in this way. Any of us could face this awful predicament at some point in our lives. Why can’t people be nice to people anymore just because it’s the right thing to do. Why do some people feel it’s acceptable to treat others in such an unkind manner. I volunteer for a homeless organisation and the majority of people I come across are lovely towards people facing this rowing problem and most are respectful towards the situation (especially the homeless themselves). The disgusting behaviour you have been unfortunate enough to experience from this awful security guard says a lot more about him than yourself, and I would try to not let it enter your head too much and get you down. I would take it further however and report it and hopefully someone in authority from Debenhams sees this post and replaces all your damaged property with items from their store (at the very least). In the meantime I sincerely hope that your situation improves and you find a home/help soon. All the best and good luck for the future x

Debenhams should have the Security Gaurd on the carpet and seriously disciplined. Or if this hasn’t happened then it is obvious that they condone this bullying, unsympathetic behaviour. If this is the case shame on you! I for one will not shop in one of your stores again and I ask others to take this stand too, until they apologise and reimburse this person with new beding and clothes. A donation to a shelter would be a good idea as well.

Stopped shopping in Debenhams years ago after a rude cafe attendant spilled cola on my sons sandwich and laughed. Management no better offer me a free cola next time I visited my son is now 26 and I ain’t been back there for 18 years! Stockton on Tees shop.

Disgraceful behaviour, anyone of us are a payday away from homelessness in this day and age so don’t judge anyone. Debenhams should hang their heads in shame and the security guard should be sacked immediately and charged with assault. No one chooses this way of life and should be supported as much as possible, how would you feel if all your worldly possessions were ruined in seconds by one childish act of evil?

There security gives us a bad name. I work as a security officer and iv come across a few homeless sleeping in doorways when I have to unlock buildings early in the morning and I have never had any bother being a lone female too. In fact a few times I have given them a time in which they will need to move as the staff will be arriving and they have been grateful to be given time to sort them self’s out. What he did was bullying and he was out of order.

Homeless is a sure sign that our country is not working, no one deserves to be homeless in a country as wealthy as the UK . The undeserving rich have sucked up all the resources including property & are now extorting money from the poor, passing laws so property does not have to be habitable.

The Security Guard and the Manager are beneath contempt on so many levels. I intend to voice my concerns to the overall general Manager of Debenhams asking who would have ultimate responsibility should the “homeless” person suffer from hypothermia due to wet bedding. The Guard’s actions were irresponsible in the extreme, worthy of a child’s immature thinking.

You should name and shame the store that did this to you.I,for one,would definitely write a letter of complaint.And for all you people who made nasty little comments about him owning a dog or having a phone,you have obviously no idea at all what it’s like to spend a night on the streets can be very scary !!!,the companionship and warmth an animal can bring when the rest of your society has made you an outcast is beyond priceless and a phone is sometimes your only hope of ,finding a job or staying in contact with people who live in the “normal world”….what has happened to our society where it’s acceptable to persecute and bully those in need.personally I find it abhorrent that our society is slipping backwards and not striding forwards into the future when we have so much technology and knowledge to share.

Since this has got into the public domain I believe that Debenhams should make a public apology and sizeable donation to homeless charities. It’s bad enough being homeless without the added humiliation and indignity that the victim of this assault suffered.

How very cruel! I cannot believe that any decent human could act in this way. This man is without compassion or shame, his family, if he has one, must be sickened by his behaviour. This will not be an isolated incident. This type throws petrol over stray cats, steals the content of charity boxes, kills animals for fun, bullies co-workers, jeers at the disabled and festers in his own odious nature. I predict a very lonely and miserable old age.

No one knows why that person is homeless but no matter the circumstances no need for that at all. Just ask to move along its not hard is it. I’ve been homeless also, just 2 years ago for around half a year, I just have no direct family and nobody that cared, I’m not and never have been a drug user or any sort of stereotypical assosiciation of homelessness, my parents passed on and I was left financially inept. So let this first of all establish not to judge that homeless people have always done bad to fall into their circumstances. Secondly I was unable to step into work due to lack of identification due to no address or paperwork (birth certificates, nat insurance details, bank details etc), since I got help into accommodation I got a job in 2 months after I got all my details and stuff sorted out, and been working ever since, homeless people are down on their luck and would do anything to change it, they are not lazy or unwilling to help them self’s, sometimes its just IMPOSSIBLE to help yourself when there is nothing to start from. I think its obvious that no homeless person should be discriminated against and should even be a crime to, picking on the elderly whomb are vulnerable is considered sickening, and to do so to equally vulnerable homeless people is EXACLY the same.

A dreadful story of inexcusable bullying behaviour. if i were not a calm and peaceful person I would go to a Debenham store and do a bit of jumbling of stock. Not theft of course, just a little mixing of the things they sell. Debenham’s will like it about as much as Russell enjoyed his stuff being ruined. Fortunately I don’t do things like that and would never aadvise anyone to do it even though they can’t touch you for it. Imagine if 20 people a day went in with the same punishment in mind….

This is absolutely disgusting. What are we becoming if a large corporation can follow these kind of tactics. Personally I will avoid this shop now. I think that they should make a public apology and the security guard should perhaps maybe consider his position??? perhaps the homeless person could have his job. We are living in 2016 it is no longer acceptable for large shops to take this type of behavior and consider it acceptable. If they were at school then there would be repercussions this attitude is bullying and typical of school behavior. Perhaps the store manager should make a public apology and perhaps the company should consider his or her position too. I personally will not shop in Debenhams until there is an apology and sizeable donation to a homeless charity.

Seek police assistance also declare it a hate crime as discrimination against homeless, it’s a thing they are trying to stop at moment. I’m guessing here but I’d say this is a combination of a nasty-minded security man acting independently and an apathetic member of junior management who doesn’t see the need to take the gripes of a delegation of homeless people any further.
All of which makes social media such a brilliant thing: because neither the security man nor the manager thought it would go any further, and now it has.
Debenhams’ reputation is tarnished by this cheap behaviour, and I reckon in addition to an apology they should give Russell Allen a job. Maybe as a security man – I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a vacancy coming up soon…

Heard of a guy that got made redundant days two weeks before Crimbo and then got chucked out his house cause he couldn’t pay his bills. Two days before Crimbo he threw himself in front of a train. So asshole security bloke stop and think next time. Everyone has a story and never judge a book by its cover cause one day you might be in the same position. A girl who is homeless in our town was beaten up by two sub humans. Not one of us knows what will happen to us in the future. Why does nobody help anyone nowadays? Never ever saw homeless people when i was younger, simply because everybody helped everybody and no questions asked, problem nowadays is that people are money mad, the more they make the better they think they are, that is such a shame. I don’t have much but i offer this guy a roof over his head and help to find work if he wants or needs it, nobody should have to live like this or put up with the ignorance of others, i’d be ashamed if i was one of them people, thank god i’m normal!

At Christmas every year I make lunch for my own family and for older people who cant do it for themselves and it gives you a lovely feeling that you have done something nice for another human being for nothing in return so come on Debenhams show goodwill to this gentleman.

Debenhams should have CCTV coverage of the guard doing this. That will be the evidence that is required to corroborate vandalism to your property. Citizens Advice Burea or victims support should be able to offer some support either with the process or general support. No one should be subject to hate crime.

Instead of the government sending billions of pounds overseas, they should realise that charity begins at home and provide warm shelters for the homeless, especially ex military personnel. They have got their priorities all wrong. Debenhams ought to do the decent thing and make a goodwill gesture by paying compensation or this incident will rebound upon them. The store guard should be sacked and prosecuted. He could well have caused the death of this poor man.

I just received this from Debenhams after complaining this morning. I replied immediately.

Firstly, we?d like to say that we take situations like this very seriously, which is why we wanted to wait until we had been able to determine what happened before responding.
We have established that this was an unfortunate accident in which the routine cleaning of the fire exit from the inside of the store resulted in some of the gentleman?s property on the
other side of the fire exit becoming wet. Debenhams has now supplied the gentleman which new bedding and clothing, and a member of out team has met him to offer our sincere
apologies for any distress.
The view of our customers and the wider local community are very important to us, and we?d like to thank you for taken an interest in this matter.

Actually we live in a country where people seem to be unable to understand that those at the bottom of the pile are there because of corporate greed, tax avoidance verging on the criminal, and right wing government connivance. The 7p in every £100 spent on foreign aid would do very little in the face of all that.

If it’s true he’s not homeless then that’s pretty unexplainable. But it still doesn’t excuse what the Debenhams employee did. Large companies make a lot of money out of the buying public and also by employing people often on rubbish wages. The least they can do is vet employees, train them and manage them properly so this kind of thing does not happen to anyone on their doorstep or in their shop. We are the paying public and we have a right to expect certain standards, including towards supposedly homeless people. If the man was doing something criminal, Debenhams should have called the police. An employee behaving like this has put Debenhams on the wrong side of the argument and earned them a lot of approbrium.

I worked as a security officer for Allders and was there when it went into administration. I would never have done anything like what this moron did and would have expected severe sanctions from my manager if I had. It should never have happened that anybody do this to another human being.
If a company employee did it on company’s premises or near to them, in a place that homeless people were in the habit of using as overnight shelter, then it’s beyond inexcusable.
Debenhams need to accept responsibility and if that’s already happened the company should make reparations to him to cover the cost of the damage and indignity he suffered. Then they should add a significant amount to encourage the local store to be more human in future.
And after setting that in motion, the company should take immediate punitive action to prevent it from happening again.

The person who did this is employed by Debenhams and is therefore an agent of Debenhams acting on their behalf , if this behavior is acceptable to Debenhams management then people should show their collective displeasure by walking past and not shopping there. To those asking how he can have Internet and the like. Most cheap phones have access and there are plenty of free wifi hotspots in town centres. Add to that public libraries have computers, plenty of places have access points to the internet. It’s not something that limited to your home anymore. This is just awful behaviour on the part of Debenhams and this bully of a security guard. That’s the last time I shop there.

Fully furnished, with a new wardrobe, bills and food included??? It doesn’t matter whether this man was homeless for an hour, a day, a month or a year, it doesn’t matter whether this man had a phone, a laptop, a credit card, a sleeping bag, shoes or no shoes. At the end of the day an employee of Debenhams deliberately damaged property belonging to the man. This is gross industrial misconduct and must be dealt with accordingly by the company. To do nothing is to condone the employees action. The man should at least be re-imbursed and compensated.

It always amazes me how so many people lack empathy or sympathy until it happens to them. It’s primarily the fault of the security guard, unless he was acting under instructions from the shop. If not, he should be done for assault and made to lay out of his own pocket for all this man’s posessions which were soaked, damaged or ruined. He should receive a hefty fine too, to be given to the homeless man.
If acting under Debenham’s instruction, the store ought to be fined till they bleed.

It is a very insensitive and unkind act especially during the winter months. The security guard needs some training on compassion and creative problem solving.
No one deserves to be homeless. A kind gesture for Debenhams would be to replace the items that were given to you by the public. Since the arrogant security guard ruined the items; they could take the cost of the items out of his pay check. I would think a proper apology would be in order as well.
I am sorry this happened to you. It is sad to read and these unkind acts are becoming the norm. It takes about 2 seconds to be kind and the results last a lifetime. All the best.

Perhaps a good old… well organised peaceful protest outside Debenhams Portsmouth? A 24hr ‘Sleep-Out’ of the public (sleeping bags, tents etc) who disagree with the way this despicable behaviour of the security guard mentioned? I’m sure that the negative publicity this would bring and also the affect on sales would push the store to do something to compensate the gentleman who was abused… Either that or address the security guard who committed the abuse, in accordance with actual store policy. I hope this comes to something for you, I for one will never visit that store if I do visit the area… disgusting behaviour…

I was a working mum with 3 sons and received some dreadful comments from work mates but what has happened to this man is outrageous. Especially a responsible adult who is more than capable of asking you politely to wake up as the store is opening shortly and would you please mind moving away from the door. Where has empathy and kindness gone in this world? Moreover this person wasn’t asking for handouts but why should the security guard get away with treating someone like that. The problem is that, whether they agree with it or not, institutions like this tend to defend their staff, particularly if the assault is against someone they consider “not important”. And I’m pretty sure it’s criminal assault we’re dealing with. I’ve been subject to outragious bullying treatment by security staff myself, who were then defended by the store in question. Unfortunately, only money will make them take notice, so I’d say a very public boycott of Debenhams could have the desired effect.

After spending a considerable amount of money at debenhams boxing day and day after..
If i do not see a publication of an apology from the store and a full reimbursement to the homeless guy for his belongings and compensation within a couple of days
I will firstly return all purchases to the store
Secondly i will ensure no member of my family or myself shop there again
I will ask for the store manager when returning the purchased items and advise him why the items have been returned and explain my total disgust at their actions

His bedding and clothes were soaked, so he needs new clothes, bedding, as well as compensation for all the items that were damaged. Irreplaceable items of personal emotional significance may have been damaged. Because he was wet, on a cold night, he suffered great discomfort, and would have been at risk from illness due to exposure. As his sleep was disturbed, he should, at the very least, be given the means for accommodation. . For his distress, shock and the psychological abuse, he should receive help, care and very significant financial compensation.

To soak a mans only belongings, his only means of warmth and comfort, on a cold night, and in a seemingly hard and cruel world, is reprehensible, inhuman and cruel. I will be writing to, and boycotting Debenhams from now on, and I hope my friends do the same. My best friend and I try to do a lot for the homeless, in our area, but the opposition we come across is ridiculous and unnecessary. Organisations will take your money, gladly, but practical help is rejected. What area are you in, Russell? Maybe we can help?

Homeless & Debenhams.
Recently there was a situation that involved one of our homeless and Debenhams Portsmouth.
I have had several meetings and phone conversations with ALL involved.
Debenhams have donated new bedding and a bag of goodies to the gentleman involved along with an appology for the incident they have also agreed to meet up again for a coffee to look at how to help more constructively.
ALL parties agree it has been blown out of proportion and ALL parties are happy to move on with no further need for altercations.
This situation has resulted in several direct threats towards the staff and that is unacceptable expecially when it included ppl that had nothing to do with the incident.
As ward Cllr and chair to The homeless working group I can confirm I too am happy with how this has been resolved.
Portsmouth is a great passionate city who really care for our most needy and the storm kicked up over this proves it. However it really wasn’t as bad as it has come across.
Please to really help our needy we should work with them and others rather than against. We are Portsmouth city. We should be as one.
All parties involved have learnt from this incident and personally I’m looking forward to what we can achieve as together for the greater good of all involved.
Please help and blow this storm out because it really isn’t what it seems.
Lastly this incident raised other concerns and I will be working with Debenhams to address each individually.

Just back from Brighton having seen many more homeless on the streets. I noticed more young people with newish rucsacs and sleeping bags as if they were going travelling. I guess they were recently away from home. Are we ( we are ) becoming like nazis , increasingly intolerant and justified in punishing those who don’t conform. The security guard is a symptom of the zeitgeist , if you are on the streets it’s your own fault.

If this is verified, then the CEO of Debenhams PLC should:
1. Offer a full apology to Mr Allen;
2. Compensate him for the distress caused by the unlawful assault on Mr Allen by a Debenhams employee;
3. Replace the items damaged/destroyed by the unlawful assault;
4. Dismiss the employee concerned.
The sad thing is that this probably does have to be spelled-out as we live in an age where humanity is cheap and profits are sacrosanct.

Agree with all who think that the security guard should be dismissed. I also think he should be charged with assault and criminal damage to property. Apparently Debenhams have given the homeless man some new clothes and a “bag of goodies” and are going to meet with the man over a coffee and have a chat about the situation. If he’s happy with that maybe that’s all that matters and all us keyboard warriors should just STFU. On the other hand, it doesn’t seem like justice is being done. This is appalling, why would someone do this to someone’s only belongings. The lad obviously moves along when the shops ready for opening. I’ve been tucked up in a ward bed every night with central heating & hot food & drinks at my disposal. I’ve moaned when I get up in the dead of night for the loo. So dread to think how bad things have been for the homeless. So Debenhams who employ this bully of a secrurity guards it is your responsibility to reimburse this lad so he can replace his stuff. Some compensation to make up for his inconvenience, maybe this could come out of your security guards wages? I am very sympathetic to homeless people and last year tried to help by purchasing 10 of each Thermal Socks, Thermal Gloves and Thermal Hats. I contacted several homeless charities who all declined the donation!! So I gave them to a cancer charity shop to sell on.
It’s terrible what allegedly happened to this homeless person. Strange though that everything he had was destroyed except for his mobile phone (that was obviously a smartphone when he was able to write this post).

All of these big stores are missing out on some grear marketing opportunities the festive period. They don’t want homeless people sleeping outside their doors so why not team up with the homeless charities and local authorities to do something to help. It dosen’t need to be a large donations from the store. In most city centres the store have later opening hours on Thursday nights in December, why not allow the homeless charities to collect donations in the stores on those nights. Imagine how much could be raised in a couple of hours if ever shopper donated £1.

I suggested something along those lines to Debenham’s complaints people and the email I got back had the line “Although we would like to help, due to the large number of requests we receive we are only able to support our nominated charities.”

The security is thinking hes being clever by using water BUT if the water damages property in a way that simply cant either be washed off or dry, ITS CRIMINAL DAMAGE (CRIMINAL DAMAGE ACT 1971). If goods say not water proof like a mobile phone was damaged as a result of this guards action and either required a replacement or repair. This would constitute as criminal damage. If clothes shrank as result and thus made them unwearable as they were designed to be and needed replacing, this would also count.
If this occurred outside and its really cold (winter), it could be seen as Aggravated criminal damage as you were not offered the chance to dry off/change of clothes so run the risk of an illness like Hypothermia.
There’s also abuse of power and position and could well be seen a assault.

The thing here is, does the victim have proof this security guard carried this out beyond a verbal admission, does security cameras cover the area it happened ?
If he does then seek further legal advice and enforcement. I cant say how it will turn out but this flippant action now carried out by to many shop owners needs to stop.
PS: If it happened on debenhams property its also i violation of the health and safety at work act.

The security guard might be enforcing the businesses’ civil entitlement to evict you off their land but his method and attempt at detterment is criminal, the guard belongs in a magistrates court, tell the police, have the CCTV seized, and prosecute the man, a magistrate’s court would have him for this

Like many big corporations Debenhams give to charity…….. as a tax write off. Let’s make no mistake about this, they are in a positon to really do something should the want to. Many big firms now outsource security and use this to distance themselves from the actions of individuals. The reality is this gaurd was an agent of Debenhams and his actions represent the company, this is a fact.
Here is a company whose role is to make share holders money and as such they represent their share holders. It’s time these share holders took some social responsibility and actively do something for the communities at large.
It makes no difference which day of the year this happened, it’s not clever and not right. Sacking the gaurd, meeting with Russel and sorting out a bag of ‘goodies’ is nothing but a PR exercise to protect shareholders interests.
So Debenhams ( as if they will read this) Russel is not a homeless person, he is a person experiencing homelessness, so have the respect to treat him as a person everyday of the year

I never thought anyone could be so low as to do that. We should not condemn homeless people. We do not know their circumstances. They may be getting out of an abusive relationship or family may have not accepted them. Not all homeless are on drugs or alcohol so do not judge until you know the facts!
Help can be given in way of a coffee, a meal or just being talked to. Be kind.

I think the security guard should be charged with assault and criminal damage. I would get his name and report it to the police, and go visit one of the solicitors who give a half hour free session for some advice. Also speak with the Echo, name names as well as the shop concerned…bad publicity all round.

There are many homeless people who, rather than give their dogs up, keep their dogs, and these dogs are, all the ones i have seen, the priority and always well cared for.

Firstly, we’d like to say that we take situations like this very seriously, which is why we wanted to wait until we had been able to determine what happened before responding.
We have established that this was an unfortunate accident in which the routine cleaning of the fire exit from the inside of the store resulted in some of the gentleman’s property on the other side of the fire exit becoming wet. Debenhams has now supplied the gentleman with new bedding and clothing, and a member of our team has met him to offer our sincere apologies for any distress caused.

A large ‘British’ conglomerate treating people like this? Compare to a small, Asian owned and run Fish & Chip shop in Wolverhampton (not far from where a new Debenhams store development is throwing the centre into chaos) opened for two extra hours after their usual 1730 closing time on Christmas eve – to GIVE away fresh, hot food to the homeless. They did this in 2015 too.

This is awful, when I worked in retail we always had the same old man & his dog snoozing in our doorway, gentle wakeup, cup of coffee and a chat and off he toddled.

I went out helping the homeless on the 23rd & it was such an eye opener, so upsetting to see so many people living on the streets. I have so much respect for these people. We are supposed to help each other not hurt or offend people, this is so cruel! You wouldn’t treat an animal like this, so why treat a human like this!! I am not spending another penny in Debenhams and people should do the same! The place should be boycotted for good!!

I hope the security guard never becomes homeless. It could happen to anyone. Debenhams ought to arrange for the security person to sleep out a couple of nights or volunteer at a hostel to find out how awful it is to be homeless. He has shown no compassion or respect.

The security guard should be given 10 minutes to get his bags packed pick up his P45 and leave in the same manner he has treated this person. Debenhams should be ashamed to have this type of personnel representing them and they should be liable to replace all the damaged items compensating this person. I did write a post about looking at criminal damage,aggravated criminal damage, an abuse of power and position and even assault not to mention a breach of health and safety but i now wish to draw attention to a ploy i suspect Debenhams and the security firm i employ.
Basically they will try to pull the guard and place him elsewhere so its important to take down the security firms name so they too can be bombarded with posts about “is this how you train your security guards to behave”. This security firm deserves as much anger as Debenhams who will judging by there online reply, look to worm there way out of it.
Keep up the pressure as it will send a strong message to any business owner and like minded public that this treatment of people in an unfortunate position will not be tolerated. Right to mainstream news and get this published nationally.

I made reference to the possibility that the guard may be contracted to Debenhams from another firm and not on Debenhams staff. Which is highly likely. However, the fact that Debenhams gave a woeful excuse for the behavior of the guard makes them complicit in the act itself. Both companies should be setting about making proper restitution to the fella and ensuring this does not happen again.
It’s been proven that we are all 3 bad decisions from homelessness ourselves and should pay more attention to those around us who are less fortunate than us.
I volunteer every Christmas & New Year and help to provide a hot meal and shelter for those less fortunate than myself. I am grateful for what I have but have time that I can give, so I choose to give it in this way, helping the homeless and those in need at this time of year. I can have a hot cooked meal any day, and a glass to celebrate new year any time. So why not postpone that and give the time over to help the Cyrenians, Salvation Army, Red Cross, Emmeaus, Samaritans and many other worthy causes who give a hand and listening ear to those who need it all year but more so in the festive season.

Then to pick on someone who has no means to house themselves is just pure reprehensible. We are all only one pay packet away from the fall to homelessness and he should be reminded of this.
