A Labour MP – Jess Phillips – has written to the Justice Secretary Michael Gove to complain about a DWP tribunal judge’s criticism of her after she put an X at the end of a letter to a constituent.
This is not satire:
Cameron’s Britain – where our elected representatives and officials are criticised for showing a little humanity.
just a little x that shows a little warmth and compassion..

To think that we have over four more years of this heartless and cruel, elitist government.

Pingback: Cameron’s Britain: MP officially criticised for showing humanity to constituent | Pride’s Purge | Jay's Journal
As a TU representative, members (who were mainly female) would append a kiss if they were grateful for some action I had taken. This is, it seems to me, the equivalent of the ‘social greeting kiss’ deployed by many women. Being male, I never returned the kiss because it might well have been misinterpreted. Responding in this way is common among women in this society and more generally in, for example, France. People in difficulties need sometimes to demonstrate their relief in being supported. Yet another member of the judiciary is out of touch with the rest of society.

I agree with Graham, the informalaltity and kiss is common usage amongst younger females these days, I use it a lot myself. The judge is misreading this so it’s as much a social usage issue as much as a dismissal of compassion.
It’s ridiculous and I hope (ha!) Gove does something.

Judges have been delivering daft judgements under all governments for decades. Please enlighten us, Mr Pride… Why is this particular one Cameron’s fault?
You could of course name the judge and publicly place the blame where it actually belongs……

Matt Hewson, you are a pompous ass! If she knew the name of the judge she would have said it, the MP’s letter is clear on that. Neither does she say it is Cameron’s fault, she is drawing attention to a fault with the judiciary. An MP’s I think.

Mr ‘Cleverly’ – You should read more carefully. My question was regarding Mr Pride’s absurd conflation.
In fact I happen to agree with Ms Phillips, though she should have written to the judge about it in the first instance, rather than to Mr Gove, which will achieve nothing. If this foolish judge was in any doubt about the relationship between Ms Phillips and her constituent, he should have asked one or both of them instead of jumping to a conclusion.

Seriously, it’s wonderful to show humanity, but this kind of letter, is NOT the way one does a letter in any business or professional world.

Actually, since it applies to the judiciary and their behavior then it’s Lord Chancellor’s purview to look at it. That would be Gove.

Junius – No, in fact quite the reverse. Michael Gove is not allowed interfere with specific cases in an independent judiciary (and no doubt his reply to Ms Phillips will say exactly that). Ms Phillips really should understand constitutional and judicial matters better than this, and she is apparently advising her unfortunate constituent very badly.
Procedures for complaints about the conduct of judges can be found on http://judicialconduct.judiciary.gov.uk/.
