Tory peer Lord Blackwell trousers £150,000 as chair of a private company called Interserve on top of the £580,000 salary he gets as chair of Lloyds Bank.
Blackwell’s Interserve has just announced it’s cutting and running from a contract it ‘won’ 3 years ago to provide catering and cleaning services to NHS hospitals in Leicester.
Interserve’s decision to cut and run four years early comes after a disastrous three years which saw Blackwell’s company accused of leaving NHS hospital wards dirty and patients going hungry. Some quotes from patients:
“I was hungry most of the time”
“It was utter chaos”
“Patients on my ward, including some with diabetes, crying they were so upset.”
“Patient care and safety was put at risk, with nurses chasing around other wards trying to find food”
So surprising. I mean, put a company run by some of the same incompetent people who managed to crash the entire global economy in charge of feeding hospital patients?
What could possibly go wrong?
PS The Cameron government is set to hand over to Interserve a LOT more privatised NHS contracts.

How long will the citizens of the UK continue to take this terrible management of our core services? How much does it take before the peasants revolt….?

This is such a shame. I’ve just been to my very handy local hospital out-patients and the staff treated me impeccably. Professional caring people doing a good job under increasingly difficult circumstances. It is awful to be let down by outside contractors failing to deliver or care. I can only imagine having to try to look after increasingly disgruntled hungry neglected, sick people. What a nightmare!
How would one manage diabetic patients if not by regular food and drink? It isn’t all about the medication surely? It is time Ministers realized all the jobs in the hospital are important and must be done well. Cleaning, cooking, feeding, Recieving, it all counts and it all contributes to the wellness of patients
