(not satire – it’s the UK press!)
A lot of people have expressed surprise that the so-called Independent newspaper has come out in support of another Tory/Lib Dem coalition
But there really is no surprise.
First of all, the chairman of Independent newspapers Evgeny Lebedev, is a big fan and friend of David Cameron.
Here he is meeting with Cameron a couple of months ago:
And the person who decides on newspaper policy – the Group Content Editor of the Independent and Standard titles Chris Blackhurst – is the son of a Tory councillor and a big fan of the Tories.
Here he is just a few days ago in print praising the UK’s richest people and lambasting Ed Miliband at the same time:
Ed Miliband is wrong, our rich are job-creating innovators
The so-called news that a bunch of wealthy, privileged, out-of-touch media types are supporting the Tories is a bit … well .. dog-bites-man when it comes to news.
But the ones I feel sorry for are all the Independent readers who have now had a rude awaking because they mistakenly thought their newspaper really was independent.
.
Please feel free to comment.

Funny that the Independent supports the Tory / Lib Dems, but keeps telling, as headlines of all the starving that those parties denies is caused by their policies.
The cheaper sister paper – The I – especially.
See my website as to how we could get Tories by default from Thursday:

Voting different could bring in a whole group of new MPs guaranteed anti austerity.
Not least because a whole load of them are councillors sacked by Labour party over the years for voting against austerity cuts EVERY TIME.

You could argue that the only truly independent newspaper is The Sun, because it supports the hard left in Scotland and the hard right elsewhere…… (or is that more like schizophrenia?)

Tom Pride here not only breaks the news that the Independent now supports the Tories, as the paper itself has shown in its editorial, but explains why, given the links between its owner, Evgeny Lebedov, and its Group Content editor, Chris Blackhurst, and the Tories.
The Independent never was strictly a left-wing paper. It always claimed to be independent of any particular party. I think the two founding editors were supposed to be bi-partisan – one Tory, the other more left-wing.
It has published articles criticising the Coalition’s welfare policies, particularly in the ‘I’, its sister paper. However, elsewhere and at other times its has shown itself to be very Tory. I can remember reading article by David Aaronovitch, which argued that liberalisation and privatisation of the health service would be no bad thing. It’s published similar articles since then.
Other Tories, who have written for the paper including Simon Kelner, and Dominic Lawson, Nigel Lawson’s son. So while I’m disappointed that the Indie has come out to urge everyone to vote Tory, I honestly can’t claim to be surprised.
Just horribly let down. Like the rest of its readership.

Honestly, what’s the fuss I am sure the Indie’s readership are quite capable of making their own decision on where to place a X on a ballot paper. The owner of the paper can also express his views, for heavens sake he owns it and purchased it from a pound shop so is allowed to support his friend David. In the end it does not matter as Parliament as long since lost any real power.
