(not satire – it’s the UK today!)
In the light of Saudi Arabia’s decision to publicly flog a blogger a thousand times for being too liberal, here’s an interesting extract from a recent document* by the UK’s National Offender Management Service (my highlights):
How exactly, I wonder, is the UK prison service going to help with the training of the Saudi Prison Service?
Teach them how to flog and behead people in public?
And without any apparent trace of irony – two paragraphs below the one describing how the UK is going to help the Saudis out with their floggings and beheadings – we find this one:
.
Perhaps when the Ministry of Justice talks about the “depth and adaptability of the UK legal system” – it’s referring to the “depth and adaptability of the UK legal system” to now sell itself off to the highest bidder?
.
* Interesting how in the document the UK government openly describes Justice in terms of “commercial brands” “products” and “markets“.
.
Please feel free to share. And comment.

Thanks, I really like this. In fact I am still not sure if you have made it up (that’s how good it is). Should really be in Al Murray’s manifesto which of course is brilliant. But I can remember Screaming Lord Sutch and much of what was in his manifesto has come on board. Never underestimate the stupidity of mankind (which gladly, Tom, you don’t)
[Unfortunately all too real. You can see the original document on the gov’ website here: Ministry of Justice Mid Year Report to Parliament ] – TOM

The prisons in the Arab world, like many of the developing nations, has a reputation for being extremely grim and brutal. The Saudis’ ideas of justice are also very much at variance with western concepts. Quite apart from the fact that Saudi Arabia is a theocratic absolute monarchy, where any religion except Wahhabi Islam is banned and severely persecuted, other basic Western norms of justice simply don’t exist. Like innocence until proven guilty. I heard of case where one Westerner over there dropped dead of a heart attack while playing tennis with another westerner. As there was no-one else around, the Saudis immediately arrested the other man on suspicion of murder, and threw him in prison until his lawyers could get him out.
As for the morality of providing prison services for such a brutal and intolerant regime, the British arms industry has been selling their ‘products’ and ‘services’ to them for decades. These have included weapons that are banned under international convention, such as electronic batons and shields.

Amputations also boost the score of barbaric punishments in the land of Saud.
UK government ability to not allow any of this to get in the way of their big biz accommodations for profits and corruption, is truly impressive.

Sadly I am not surprised. It wasn’t that long ago that British Aerospace was still making electronic torture batons for the Chinese Government to inflict pain (frequently up the arses or vaginas) of their political prisoners and this is on a par with that. If I’d been caught in possession of one of those terrible tools on UK soil, it is entirely probable that a custodial sentence would have accompanied any court hearing that followed. Selling it to “Johnny Foreigner” however – well that’s just business as usual. There should be arrest warrants for hat least half of the UK’s MP’s for their complicity in international terrorism.

Two Irishmen are sent over to Saudi Arabia for a big construction job….. They get lost in the vast dunes of the Saudi desert and Paddy says to Murphy: “Where the feck is this construction site office, then?”…. Murphy replies: “How the feck should I know, but lets get out of here quick before the cement arrives….”

This is patently untrue. The Saudi Arabian justice system delivers high quality beheading services! Not one complaint in 60 years!! Although, to be fair, floggings are not what they used to be. If you ask me it’s the fault of the medics, bloody Health & Safety mad!!
