The coalition government has confirmed today that all privatised passenger rail services across the UK are to be consolidated and become part of the Bisto Gravy division.
The move comes not long after it was revealed that – despite UK passenger rail tickets being the most expensive in Europe and rising – private rail companies still receive £4 billion a year in subsidies from the British taxpayer.
In a press conference, Transport Minister Patrick McLoughlin confirmed the news;
“For many many years now, privatised passenger rail services across the UK have been a gravy train for the private rail companies running them. That’s why today, we’ve decided to make it official.”

Perhaps people should be reminded that they can make their own gravy/sauce. It’s really not that difficult … Just keep an eye on any emergent lumps.

Take it all back into public ownership. There are no net assets. They can sing for their redundancy. Not at my door, please.

Privatisation = public debt, private profit.
Re-nationalise. And then enact a law saying that (in effect) publicly-owned institutions can never be sold again without the express permission of the British people – by, say, a 75% majority (figure plucked out of air, negotiation possible) in a direct referendum with at least another 75% turnout. Not having such a law was a major mistake when building the public sector.
Public sector services were never ‘state assets’. They were our assets – belonging to, as the Americans say, we, the people. The executive had no right to sell them. And by god we have paid the price. Past time to stop paying it.
