(not satire – it’s the Tory Party!)
Sometimes the devil really is in the detail.
For me, the most damning testimony against Andrew Mitchell in the ‘plebgate’ libel trial was from another police officer – Inspector Duncan Johnston – who provided protection to Mitchell on visits to Kenya, Somalia and Tunisia.
Inspector Johnston gave a statement to the high court in which he said that the public school educated Tory minister refused to shake his hand when they first met:

Everything Mitchell said could be excused as a joke, or that it was taken out of context.
But refusing to shake the hand of someone who’s been tasked to protect your life – for the simple reason that you think they are beneath you – is inexcusable.

Interestingly Mitchell’s constituency office seem to see no reason why a man who has been judged to have lied in a court of law should be deselected.
A vox pop with constituents (by our local TV news), however, suggested that they strongly disagree…

Is your inference that he i. saw the hand offered, and ii. didn’t shake it because it was beneath him, really supported by the evidence?

Tom…..as ever you are spot on the case! I’ve met some protection officers who tell similar tales and I am still incredulous! These chaps do a superb job and should be given the utmost respect. Of course most politicians treat their bodyguards with kindness, respect & generosity….as they should!

In my days temping at one of the horrible corporations in Canary Wharf, I offered my hand to be shaken – and was left hanging. I assumed that person was just a massive bastard. And I assume the same about Andrew Mitchell.

I’m not surprised. Even at the time this was first reported, I don’t remember any friend or colleague speaking up in support of him or saying that they didn’t believe the allegations which I thought was very telling.

i am from the establishment and it depends on the circumstances as a degree of detachment was common place when Mitchell was younger
he grew up in an area where the shaking of hands and talking was taboo with all of the working class and that is still evident today in the upper circles irrespective of your job
the government and the royals are above all else in his eyes and there lies the main problem when the UK government try to negotiate in the EU they cant as there overall arrogant demeanor across the board make everything they have to say invalid

He should get a job driving a red London Bus so he can reconnect with the real world and not be such a jerk…. People like this have forgotten their roots i.e. human (-ish in their case), the same as the rest of us.
And that copper was the winner there, who’d really want to be touched by the likes of Sweaty Mitchell?
I also know of police protection officers from some years ago who could tell juicy tales about what they’ve seen happening with some of these high and mighty pols.
It seems like pols think the disgusting things they they do (and they were) cannot be seen by the untermenschen, that they don a cloak of invisibility, when, in fact, we see, remember and talk about EVERYTHING.
So if any of those grubby little pols, stilll on the political scene by the way, are reading this, just know that your sins will catch you up one of these days.
The truth is out there…..

It’s a revolting display of poor manners by Mitchell to someone who was risking his life for him, but it shows clearly that the Tories really do think of the poor simply as servitors, who lives in and of themselves are of no value except for what they can do for them.
