Fans of Bob the Builder have expressed outrage after it was revealed that UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage has been invited by the BBC to become the new modern face of the well-loved cartoon handyman.
Leaders of the SNP, the Green Party, and Plaid Cymru have all criticised the proposals, along with the Prime Minister David Cameron, saying they should also be given the chance to be included in the new adventures of the long-running successful children’s series.
The broadcaster, however, has strongly defended the decision, saying the proposed new format and the inclusion of Nigel Farage in the main role would better reflect modern Britain by presenting a more bigoted, prejudiced and racist side to the well-loved character.
The news comes just days after the BBC announced Mr Farage is to replace Jeremy Paxman on the BBC’s flagship news programme Newsnight in which he will regularly subject himself to searching questions and hard-hitting interviews.
Mr Farage is also expected to take up the BBC’s offer of becoming a new exciting addition to the Strictly Come Dancing 2014 professional dancer line-up.
