This interesting mural appeared on a wall in Clacton this week:
But it’s not just any old mural. It’s a genuine Banksy work of art.
Tory-controlled Tendring District Council, however, in their great wisdom decided to destroy the valuable mural because they thought it was “offensive’.
Banksy murals in the past have sold for as much as half a million pounds – not to mention the benefits from tourism a genuine Banksy could have brought to an area in desperate need of revitalisation.
When weighing up the pros and cons of who to vote for in next week’s by-election, Clacton voters might do well to think about how much money the local Tory-run council has just lost them.

Just to play devils advocate for a moment: if you see an act as racist then would it not be as equally morally reprehensible to try and make money from that act?
I’m not saying that they’re necessarily right in coming to that conclusion – although anything with ‘go back to Africa’ in it could be seen as potentially racist IMO.
But if they had come to the conclusion that it was racist and still tried to make money from it, would you now not be castigating them for putting money ahead of standards?

Reminds me of Bournemouth approx 40+yrs ago; small minded. There used to be signs saying “No tea making”. Really.
They wouldn’t permit the “grockles” (A holidaymaker, or one from out of town. Particularly used in the South of England, generally as a mildly derogatory term to refer to someone from the Midlands or the North of England) to make tea on the cliffs (car park) or have BBQs on the beach.
Surprised they didn’t ban them (grockles) from wearing their knotted handkerchiefs too 🙂
Thank god (or anyone 4 that matter!) that today B’mouth has a far more welcoming generation of Councillors; they even permit BBQs on the beach!
Useless info: I used to be a bus conductor in B’mouth in the late 1960’s; students used to do this as a summer job.

it was probably erased because of the biological inaccuracies portrayed. I have yet to see pigeons eat worms and they are addressing what looks like a swallow or a swift which migrates here to eat insects on the wing. So the birds would never encounter each other anyway. So the councillors were only picking on inaccuracies Some would say nit picking but I wouldn’t.

“Gringo” I’m told that it may have originated in north America – “Green Go Home” (Green jackets of the “army”).. but don’t know really.
I use “Gringo” purposely – many “whites” in Peru hate the term ‘cos they are so racist against the local indigenous pop. But don’t mind calling them “cholos”!

Apparently the word, gringo was documented as early as 1786 in S.America. I heard rumour that during the Mexican/American war the troops were singing ( along the Rio Grande) Green Grow the rushes Oh! They the troops were Irish and a lot of Anglo Saxons etc….the Mexicans heard it as gringo.
I think it comes from the Greek word…meaning stranger or wog! 🙂

I used to be called “a Wog” at my primary school when I first arrived in England in 1959 at the age of 11. (Private school!) Wasn’t racist in my case really – look at my pic! Kids are kids (but I guess they picked it up the word from their parents) and I was different to most… a target – and they were jealous! LOL
I came (like Paddington!) from darkest Peru, at that time I spoke with an American accent, became cricket captain, good at rugby and won all the cups going at tennis 🙂
Coincidentally, a primary school friend contacted me recently from Argentina. He said that the reason he’s out there is my fault; I spoke so much about Peru/South America. 🙂
I reckon that many people in England in those days were just so narrow minded (bad education & gov’t propaganda) and still believed in The Empire!! ..

I agree with you, I’m not one of your jingoistic xenophobes, I have stated I was not in favour of war, I am in favour of intervention in the form of red cross, christian aid etc. intervention, to help those stuck in the middle of warring factions, only going to war if absolutely necessary.
If I am standing up for the downtrodden people of this country then that is my right and does not make me a racist, I think too much immigration is one of the abiding grievances of those that cannot get housing especially because they are given to immigrants over the indigenous population and don’t say it isn’t true, I got that from the horses mouth!

I would say if you want more immigration whtether it be first, second etc, build more infrastructure before deciding to increase immigration.
Privatisation of public housing has not helped either, anyone willing to buy is given priority over those that could never afford to buy, such as lone parents, because of the shortage of housing.
Housing is becoming class ridden as much as anything else.

Somebody not born in the Uk is not considered indiginous, but I accept that exception has to be made for first generation immigrants that were ferried here in the 50’s to run our public services, when there was a glut of jobs, housing etc. to accommodate them.
There should also be adequate accommodation provided and made available for genuine asylum seekers.

I have nothing against immigration per se, we need the eclectic mix, but I would want to limit immigration to asylum seekers only until we have the infrastructure to accommodate immigration again, and not just middle class immigrants who would be happy to vote for right wing policies.
There would be no need to demand that the indigenous people were provided for first if there was enough infrastructure before more immigration.
Common sense I would have thought!
