Because not long after Ed Miliband’s announcement that a Labour government would introduce a tax on homes worth over £2m to raise money to fund the NHS, Shapps tweeted this:

Of course, I suppose there’s nothing unusual about top Tories like Shapps getting annoyed about taxes. I mean, a tax on homes? Whatever next? A tax on bedrooms?

The great and fair, absolutely unbiased London Evening Standard seems to have had the same misconception with its superscript headline of ‘Miliband To Target Tax Dodgers, Tobacco Firms And Homeowners’; ooh, anyone would think that’s ALL homeowners and get completely the wrong impression.

Whilst what he says does seem wrong on so many levels now, there is one small minor point to add that may be worth mentioning: the same might not apply in the distant future & taxes once added seem to be rarely removed or changed (if this wasn’t the case then we probably wouldn’t still have a separate income tax and national insurance contributions).
Take inheritance tax for example: that was only supposed to target the super rich yet now it seems to be applying to more and more of us.
I seem to recall seeing an article saying that average house prices were likely to rise to £800,000 by 2040. We’d obviously have to wait a long time to get any where near the £2m mark – quite probably beyond our own lifetimes – but the likely outcome with something like this isn’t difficult to envisage, and just like inheritance tax this new tax will end up targeting all of us (or perhaps more likely our great-grand children).
After all, stamp duty is getting to be just as unpopular these days, and how long has that been around for?

To be fair tho, it was also stated that a yearly increase would be tied into house price increases (not sure the details however) so that as house prices increased the 2 million mark would also increase so it would need Gov to specifically change the legislation or formular to start pulling lower valued properties into the mix as apposed to more being caught up over time.
There is a great re-working of the pic, which basically says “we introduced the bedroom tax, now our mansions are going to be taxed we don’t like it”

Does anyone know how Miliband is proposing to tax >£2M houses? Remove part of the house and sell it? It must be obvious even to an idiot like Miliband that almost all the people who own very expensive houses do so because have very high incomes.
It’s about time Labour grew up and took a clear stance for the future for UK society. They should tax higher incomes, both for individuals and businesses. That includes substantially different corporation tax bands, which would make highly profitable companies like banks, utility companies, hedge funds etc. pay far more, whilst struggling small businesses would pay little or nothing.
Why do NONE of the main parties want to contemplate this? Would anyone like to take a guess……?

People who own very expensive houses either have or *had* very high incomes. It does not follow that they are in a position to pay a tax on it now. They could easily be unemployed or retired.
The only way for some of them to do so would, ironically, for them to have to access part of their wealth, which is tied up in the very asset they are being taxed on. Even when assessing contributions to social care the house you live in is not taken into account. You aren’t expected to sell up and move!
Forcing people to move is wrong. We don’t think this is acceptable for people in social housing. It is no more acceptable for rich people either. I know my view will be unpopular and there will be very little sympathy for people in a position to own property worth £2 million. But my opinion is that the government should not be enforcing policies which at the end of the day could force people out of their homes, rich, poor, or otherwise.
The bedroom tax should go, now. But I don’t think a mansion tax should take its place. Taxes should always be based on income, not your home. (and no, I don’t think much of council tax either!)

I think we agree. There is a (very small) number people who inherited a big house and have a low income, and it would be unfair for Miliband to hit those few people with the same ‘mansion tax’ as those on huge incomes. That doesn’t mean that somebody on a low income with a house far larger than their needs shouldn’t be taxed accordingly (currently via council tax) and maybe end up having to sell up and move.
Miliband is DELIBERATELY missing the point for political reasons. Fair taxation isn’t really about houses (that’s just something which sounds good to some Labour voters and make little difference) it’s about INCOME. Corporation tax is the key which ALL three main parties are ignoring.

Forgive my cynacism, but I strongly suspect that the limit won’t really take any increase sufficiently into account – if at all – and that any subsequent government – regardless of the political party involved – will continue to exploit it.

What about paying vat? Business can claim back their vat expenses the ordinary person can’t. The rich should pay value added tax that is relevant to their income.

Dear Ms Guy ‘wrong end of the stick’ Fawkes – You seem to be having a little difficulty with the idea of VAT. I realise that it’s a very difficult concept, but maybe it’s a tax on purchases, rather than on income.
Perhaps I could suggest that you think very carefully for a very long time about the title “Income Tax” and then consider whether it might possibly have something to do with income. Can you reply when you’ve done that? Thanks.

I am well aware that it is a tax on purchases, but why should a poor man be taxed on purchases the same as the rich man, especially when those with a business can have their vat receipts refunded.
If income tax is not fair (neither is incomes) neither is a tax that charges both the same amount of tax for a pint of beer irrespective of income.
Some people find paying VAT and service charges to the utility companies and other places a step too far, especially when most are run by automated services.

You really must apologise for suggesting there might be a tax on “spare” bedrooms.You should know it’s just a reduction in housing benefit. I realise that there are no smaller council properties for people to move to, unless it’s hundreds of miles away, because nobody has been building council houses since the 1980s when Blessed Margaret sold them off and wouldn’t allow the councils to spend the proceeds on building new council houses. So we should all write to Milliband and ask him to ensure that the “Mansion Tax” is recovered by reducing the tax allowances of those concerned and we can then call it an Income Tax Allowance reduction instead.

There could be an exemption card for those earning below a certain level or on benefits, that is just one of the many ideas and would cost next to nothing to implement or withdraw if earning over the proscribed limit.

The only person that should be denied food, water or even fresh air is you.
