(not satire – it’s the UKIP!)
The former Tory MP for Clacton Douglas Carswell – who has just defected to UKIP – is a bit obsessed with supermarkets.
He once wrote a whole blogpost extolling the inspirational examples of German cut-price supermarkets Lidl and Aldi:
‘What Lidl and Aldi tell us about the benefits of a free market‘.
Carswell also thinks the NHS should be run more like Tesco. Here’s what he said about GP surgeries:
“Tesco isn’t only open round the clock, they’ll deliver stuff to your door at a time that suits you. So how come ….. you can’t get to see a GP on a Saturday?”
And he seems to think hospitals should be more like 24-hour supermarkets:
“Compare the experience of many of my constituents as patients ….. with their experience as customers – 24-hour supermarkets, instant access, personalised service.”
But it’s not only the NHS. Carswell’s reason for supporting the government’s recent privatisation of the Royal Mail was mostly because he thought it should also be run more like Tesco:
Oh – and Carswell loves to hold his MP surgeries in supermarkets and once claimed expenses from the taxpayer for a 74p washing line. Bought, apparently, from Tesco.
Of course, the UKIP also think the NHS should be privatised.
So looks like Carswell’s defection to UKIP is a real meeting of minds.

What Mr Carswell fails to mention about Tesco’s, is how much food they throw away, because not enough people can afford to buy it.
This food is wasted, thousands of tonnes, millions of pounds worth.
Tesco’s meanwhile can afford to do this, because they employ people without paying them.
So, lets rejoice at the prospects of a NHS which will be as wasteful as Tesco’s, as profitable as Tesco’s whilst at the same time, as exploitative as Tesco’s.
If the future is UKIP, the past was definitely Tory.
Although I’m struggling to find any difference?
Anyone else?

Just think of all those sick & infected people, hanging around supermarkets, waiting to see a doctor, unable to buy any food, because they have to work there, 30 hours a week for free, spreading their infections & diseases too?

As you can choose the delivery of an item from a supermarket you are likely to be in rather than out as all the time covered by the time slot you will be in

Whoa, you can bet your life he’ll change his tune when he gets sick. When he needs life saving treatment, he’s not going to lie down and die in order to protect the health system’s profit center.

I agree that there’s almost no difference, but the UKIP/Tory future you’re talking about is England’s future, not the UK’s……

Given the news today that Tesco’s profits have slipped badly and they have had to slash back their dividends to Tesco’s shareholders, maybe Carswell’s ‘intellectual’ idea that the NHS should be run like Tesco is not such a brainwave after all…..Then again, Tesco supermarkets (hype-markets?) sell wonderful fruitcakes, and it has been well documented that UKIPPERS ARE fruitcakes and nut fried roasts from Bongo-Bongo Land… 🙂

UKIP does not want to privatise the NHS it’s policy is to keep it public indeed as the only party that is against the TTIP which will definitely enhance the speed at which the nhs is privatised, it is the only party in favour of keeping the NHS public. Paul Nuttall has been misquoted in a poor attempt to smear ukip in this area by those who want the nhs privatised and repeated by those who do not care.
