(not satire – it’s the UKIP!)

The former Tory MP for Clacton Douglas Carswell – who has just defected to UKIP  – is a bit obsessed with supermarkets.

He once wrote a whole blogpost extolling the inspirational examples of German cut-price supermarkets Lidl and Aldi:

What Lidl and Aldi tell us about the benefits of a free market‘.

Carswell also thinks the NHS should be run more like Tesco. Here’s what he said about GP surgeries:

Tesco isn’t only open round the clock, they’ll deliver stuff to your door at a time that suits you. So how come ….. you can’t get to see a GP on a Saturday?

And he seems to think hospitals should be more like 24-hour supermarkets:

Compare the experience of many of my constituents as patients ….. with their experience as customers – 24-hour supermarkets, instant access, personalised service.

But it’s not only the NHS. Carswell’s reason for supporting the government’s recent privatisation of the Royal Mail was mostly because he thought it should also be run more like Tesco:

Oh – and Carswell loves to hold his MP surgeries in supermarkets and once claimed expenses from the taxpayer for a 74p washing line. Bought, apparently, from Tesco.

Of course, the UKIP also think the NHS should be privatised.

So looks like Carswell’s defection to UKIP is a real meeting of minds.
