Times columnist and Tory activist Tim Montgomerie has been called “one of the most influential Tories outside the cabinet“.
So it’s interesting that in a tweet today, Montgomerie branded the charity Oxfam “socialist” for wanting to eradicate poverty:
It seems the Tories have come a long, long way from the days in 2006 when the then leader of the opposition David Cameron pledged a Tory government would seek to eradicate even relative poverty in the UK:

Looks like the Nasty Party is well and truly back!

This, unfortunately, isn’t new. One of the leading lights of the Freedom Association, formerly the National Association For Freedom, presented a petition to parliament in the 1980s loudly denouncing Oxfam and a number of other leading charities as ‘Socialist’. I also remember reading an article in Lobster in the 1990s, in which it was claimed that the Belgian secret services were so Right-wing, that they were also investigating Oxfam as a Communist organisation. It’s also another example of the transatlantic influence in the Tories. A little while ago the extreme Republican/ Conservative blogs on the other side of the Atlantic were also attacking Western charities for supposedly keeping the world’s poor in their miserable condition through a preference for state solutions and western hand-outs. Now it’s being imported into Britain again. As for the Times being the paper ‘of record’, just remember that it was the Times’ that published the accusation of the Soviet defector and self-confessed liar, Oleg Gordievsky, that Michael Foot was a KGB agent called ‘Comrade Boot’. So, not quite the organ of quality journalism it believes it is.

If Mr Montgomerie says ‘believe’ instead of ‘belief’, I’d have said that would be the first reason to ignore him. The Tories have never changed, and never will. They will just apply some more make-up from time to time!

Tom – Why do you seem to think it’s nasty to call somebody a socialist? I would take it as a compliment!
By the way, it’s not only the Tories. You seem to have forgotten that Labour banned official use of the term ‘socialism’ too. It has not been used in Labour party manifestos since 1992.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it – I happen to be one myself.
But the Tories (and, sadly, it seems New Labour) worked very hard to make “socialist” a dirty word and from the mid-1990s onwards, in the minds of most of the electorate, it seems they succeeded.
Look at the tone of the Montgomerie remark. He’s not using that word in a complimentary capacity.

Well FF,this puts matters in a completely different perspective!
I will be having my say on the Scottish Referendum in a very rare for me blogpost nearer the event.My blogpost will not be aimed at those die in the wool Scottissh Nationalists.Quite frankly I have profound difficulties in arguing with those who state that water runs uphill!My blogpost though will be addressed at those who would normally think of themselves as “socialist”.
However I think you have perhaps unwittingly hit the nail on the head when you speak of a “permanent Conservative Government”!In the light of that prospect,though he and they will never as such admit to it;Do you know who is really hoping for a Yes vote in September?
The answer is of course David Cameron and the rest of the Tory gang!

Lets face it, Oxfam wouldn’t need to exist without Tory ideologies. They are polar opposites in terms of humanity –Oxfam are there to help those that can’t help themselves, Tories are only out FOR themselves.
