I’m sure there’s been a worse political communication, at some point in history, but it’s not a contest. This splash in the shallow end of UK politics is so bad it’s shocking.

From Lands End to Adrian’s Wall (sic) – so, what about the part of England between the wall and The Border, the official border, established in law by the Treaty of York in 1237? Do people living there count as English?

I might not be quite so offended if it weren’t for them saying, “England says…” No. The English Democrats might say it, but as an Englishman I’ll speak for myself, thank you. And what I say no to is paranoid right-wing doiks like the English Democrats.

You would be right. George (possibly ‘Georgi’. Despite a friendship with a, now deceased, footy-mad Italian Trot, I’m not sure and this hour I’m not prepared to start digging out my Italian primers) was a Roman. The so-called ‘English’ are a prime example of immigration. Anglo-Saxon? The clue is in your face: Angles, Saxons who invaded and settled. What are these people on?; and whatever it is it is one drug that I think should be ‘Class A’

The English Democrats appear to have been set up as a reaction to the ‘Celtic fringe’ – Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, finally getting regional assemblies while Britain remained firmly governed by Westminster. There are serious issues involved here – about the nature of English national identity as opposed to British. A few years ago I went to a seminar presented by an Irish historian looking at the historical reality behind the images commonly associated with British and Irish national identity, to show that quite often they were very different from contemporary perceptions and stereotypes. For example, an image from the Jacobite Risings, showing the archetypal highlander with Tam O’shanter, plaid kilt and broad sword, looking every inch the proud fighter for Scots independence against the Sassenach, was actually of a loyalist Gael. Similarly, A French illustration from the 18th century showing Irish auxiliaries in the French army, portrayed them wearing red coats with the three lions, which, said the illustration, were part of their national dress. The lecturer pointed out that on Victorian stamps, the other nations of the British had symbols of their nationality, except for the English. English national identity was played down and subsumed into the general concept of the ‘British’. Hence the emergence of the English Democrats when Britishness began to split up into its component nations.
Any serious discussion of the nature of Englishness is, however, entirely absent from their party political video, which seems to consist of a very few images repeated endlessly, while a couple of men and a woman in a field repeat a set number of limited slogans: English Jobs for English workers; no mass immigration; no to EU, no Sharia law; I’m English, not British. The images taken to represent England are extremely stereotypical: St. George, White Cliffs of Dover, Winston Churchill, Spitfires and the statue of a fallen soldier on a war memorial. Thirty years ago this was pretty much the stuff of the Conservative party’s election broadcast. This had so many images of Spitfires and Hurricanes zooming around that the News Quiz’s Alan Coren described it as being about the ‘Royal Conservative Air force’. It’s very much the Conservative vision of England, all rolling fields and White Cliffs defended by stout-hearted heroes seeing off Johnny Foreigner. The ultra-patriotic soundtrack mentions Blake’s ‘Jerusalem’, but there’s no mention of the whole point of Blake’s song: the misery and exploitation of the new, industrial Britain. All together, it’s a very trite, very Tory version of Englishness, which seems to be trying to outdo John Major’s attempt to link Britishness or Englishness to cricket and warm beer in terms of sheer cringeworthiness. English national identity is actually a subject that does deserve serious attention, debate and appreciation. The English Democrats don’t offer this. For a different, and much more interesting view of English ‘folk’ views of history and identity, try and get hold of the book ‘A Ballad History of England’ instead.

Paranoid, elitist, racist, nationalistic, right-wing propaganda video constructed in a particularly amateurish ‘IN-GER-LAND’ manner. On the subject of race, what about the moving clip of the Spitfire. Have the English Democrats forgotten about the Czech & Polish pilots that helped keep Britain safe from the Fascists? Not all Spitfires were flown by Johnny English! St. George, so far as I can remember, was originally from the Middle-east, with a connection to the Roman army. Finally English jobs for English people? My research suggests that the English Democrats video was made by a US film production company!
By the way, ‘I am not British’, ‘I am not European’ I am HUMAN.

The “English Democrats” need to learn that Boudicca was not English, but a Celtic queen 4 centuries before an English foot trod British soil. Land’s End and Hadrian’s Wall are not English (Cornish and Roman respectively). The port shown in the broadcast was a Cornish port, not an English one, and stands in the land of St Piran, not of St George (a Palestinian who never came within 1500 miles of Britain). Spitfires flew for the British Royal Air Force, not an English one. And, as the English started to arrive in Britain from northern Germany and the Low Countries only in the mid 5th century, they ARE European and cannot deny the fact!

Yeah right. If you’re English, you are by definition both British AND European.
Do they think Californians and Floridians aren’t American? Or that Brummies aren’t English? Or that people from Solihull aren’t Brummies? Or that people from my street aren’t from the village I live in? Idiots.

You’ve more or less pre-empted what I was going to say – the fact that this part of Britannia is called England is the result of – er – mass immigration by Angles, Jutes and Saxons. And as far as ‘Adrian’s Wall’ is concerned – do they actually know who the Emperor Hadrian was? And – well, I refer you to my previous point, it didn’t become ‘England’ until long after the Romans had withdrawn their troops.

That’s why we export so many new laws to the EU, so they can be imposed (to some extent, at least) on the other countries.
If the UK were to secede from the EU, those laws would still apply to the UK but the “nasty foreigners” in the EU would soon start to ignore them, or rip them up completely.

Their “policies” do not begin to make sense.
There is no “mass immigration” and there never would be.
There is absolutely bugger all chance of Sharia Law being imposed on any part of the UK, or even being permitted.
The laws that are supposedly “imposed” on the UK by the EU often start out in Whitehall and are then taken to the EU so that France, Germany and the other states in the EU will also have to follow the same laws, rules and regulations.
As for “English jobs for English people”, just how do those turnips propose to discriminate against the Scots, Welsh or Irish?
However, it does seem to be quite a good video because, if one does not have any sensible policies to sell – and all they have is a few, silly slogans – all one can do is to “sell the sizzle” as Danish bacon did.
The best that can be said is that they have a catchy theme song which may disguise the fact that they are full of crap, but even that has one fatal flaw. England is not “the land of Saint George”, as he was a native of Lydda, in Roman Palestine and now, as Lod, in modern Israel. He was thus a “foreigner” to the English “Democrats” and, presumably, would not be allowed into the country. He is also the patron saint of sufferers from herpes and/or syphilis.
