Leading retailers have sparked outrage from consumers after they admitted meat was being sold in supermarkets which originated from living animals.
A huge debate was sparked recently when it emerged that 185 Subway outlets in the UK and Ireland had decided to sell meat from animals which had actually been alive before they were killed without informing their customers.
Several restaurant chains, including KFC, Domino’s Pizza, Nando’s and Pizza Express also sell meat which was alive – including chicken which they admitted had originated from the bodies of live chickens – in some or all of their stores.
And in a shocking revelation, the Daily Mail can reveal that approximately 100 per cent of New Zealand lamb in supermarkets comes from baby sheep which had been killed in abattoirs in New Zealand.
Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer also have been forced to admit that tinned tuna on sale in their stores across the UK originated from living fish which were brutally taken from the sea, asphyxiated, their delicate bodies cut up into little pieces before being squeezed into tiny cans and sold to the public.
McDonalds however have claimed that none of the meat it uses in its burgers originates from anything even faintly resembling a living animal.

What about fish fingers? Can we call fish disabled if we cut their fingers off to consume and allow foreign fish that migrate here every year to claim undue benefits?
Why has the Daily Mail not wrote about that?

Once the 5% minority have removed your freedom of choice in what you eat and start imposing other beliefs they hold dear on the majority I hope you find it as amusing. When a 60 year old man offers you a few quid to marry your 11 year old lass perchance. 🙂
Personally I prefer progress not regression to the standards of animal welfare we had in the middle ages.

Indeed animals are at least allegedly stunned before being hung up by a leg and stuck to bleed to death, at least in theory it is more humane than halal meat.

There’s plenty of footage on Youtube of animals being “stunned” before slaughter and still being 100% conscious as their necks are slit. This footage is from the UK. Halal is just another foul barbaric method of killing animals for food, this time, with religion as the excuse.
How about, if, above every meat counter, or in every butcher’s shop, we have a tv screen showing a nice long loop of all the husbandry/slaughter methods used to put that piece of carcass in the plastic so it can be put on plates to eat.
I think if more people had a the tiniest clue about how meat gets to be meat, there’d be a huge rise in the number of vegetarians (and vegans).
The dairy industry isn’t so clean either.
I saw a vox pop segment of news yesterday where several people in the street gave their opinion on the issue. Only one spoke about the cruelty aspect of Halal and all slaughter, and even then it was apologetic and timid. Every other bugger just kept their personal outrage cauldron boiling with yap about “the right to make choices and to be informed about what they fed their kids”
Be informed people, a nice day out at your local abbatoir probably won’t cost you a penny.

it’s amazing how people are happy for animals to be fed chemicals (historically antibiotics and hormones) to make nice juicy meat, and to be kept in unnatural habitats ( cages etc) being fed junk in their diets. Calf’s being killed so we can get the milk. But suddenly moan about the humainess of the method of death. Oh and plant life has been recorded ‘screaming’ (using special equipment) when a part is pulled off them.
But this piece is a light hearted look at the recent mass hysteria so laugh at mans stupidity (but feel free to cry for the animals)
AND NO I am not a vegetarian I am an omnivore

90% of halal and kosher meat comes from animals that are stunned before being slaughtered.

When I worked on a market garden the field workers were told by the proprietor to individually beat every beetroot over the head with a spade before it was pulled from the ground……. in the interests of conscientious humane agriculture 🙂

I take it, from the zeal of your post, Lucy that you yourself are either a vegetarian or a vegan? As an almost-vegan, I take some grim amusement from Tom Pride’s satirical post here, but there is the very serious point that: Shouldn’t we be much more concerned not about ritual killing or industrial killing or any other method of killing, but about the killing of the animal itself, when vegetarianism — as Gandhi and George Bernard Shaw and countless other intelligent thinkers have pointed out — is a perfectly sensible yet non-violent non-invasive consumerist option?

We know what halal is and we do not even want it! We also know that the quran exempts muslims from eating halal when they are not in a muslim country. So why are we having yout halal shit forced on us when you do not have to have it in a Western nation?

Same grim amusement here peter. Yes, vegetarian and keen on the basic issue with the idea of animal welfare/stewardship being taught in schools from day 1 until leaving day. I am sure it would result in fewer people relying on the brutal life and death of other sentient beings for their grub and there would be an inevitable improvement for the animals stewarded as companions, probably a reduction in the spontaneous acts of animal cruelty too.
We have to start at the beginning again, get the knowledge of where food comes from in early and slip in some encouragement for just simply being kind and not needing violence or suffering to fill bellies. What happens to kindness these days? It’s so often derided as the sphere of losers only. We won’t survive unless we revive it and keep it breathing.
*sits back and awaits slaughter by omnivores*

Seriously, you obviously have no idea. ‘The dairy industry isn’t so clean either’?! If you eat/drink anything dairy, you have no claims to any moral high ground whatsoever. A cow can only produce milk if it first produces a calf. What do you suppose happens to the calf? Is it going to grow up loved and cherished by its mother until it dies of old age? No. Because then the world would be over-run with cows wouldn’t it? So, you drink milk, eat cheese, yoghurt, cream, and you’re contributing to the slaughter of an animal. Potentially promoting the shipping of live veal.
You either need to be a vegan (and constantly vigilant as to the source of your soya products, which are often produced as a result of desecrating Amazon rain-forest), or you need to stop preaching and gloating.

So it’s ok for you to take the moral high ground because you are what? 12 years old and have just done a lickle lesson at school about dairy farming and you are still a bit shocked at the brutality and barbarism?
Or did you just join PETA and become vegan because you get a pretty wristband?PETA will happily use your money to kill animals and put people off working towards a better future for all animals.
Your naivety is astonishing. Your rudeness, less so, it’s very revealing. Lose that anger little one, look at what really made you angry, I’d put money on it not being the suffering or death of any non human animal.
No need to lecture me about how farming works, either in the past or the present I know more about it than you imagine.
Tell me, how many animals were exploited, abused, vivisected in the pursuit of developing the technology that you happily use to embarrass yourself on the internet? You haven’t considered that aspect have you? What about the dyes used to colour your clothes? What about the transport you use? Ever taken a medicine either OTC or on Rx? Ever used palm oil? How many animals and millions of hectares of rainforest were destroyed so you could have some oil to cook with?
It isn’t just about what goes in your gob, it’s also about what goes into your head. I see a big vacancy there. The issues around animal welfare and food production are much bigger and more complex than your rants indicate that you yet understand.
Try educating yourself, look to the future and work out how you are going to change things for the better for all animals, including human ones.

I am with you all the way, Lucy! ~ I did not notice any ‘preaching’ or ‘gloating’ in your reply post, only sensible calm words about the importance of training children from very young about animal welfare and a humane message of compassion and the importance of promoting kindness to one’s fellow humans, as well as towards all beasts of the field. I also believe that all parents have a responsibility [as well as schoolteachers] by way of what they feed their offspring from a tender age. ~ Many thanks for the forthrightness of your posts here: Do not be afraid of the lions and tigers of this world, but go in Peace!!

If that little tirade was directed at me, a) I’m 42, b) I’m an omnivore. However, I live where my food is raised, indeed produce much of it myself, and therefore have no delusions about one type of animal product being more okay than any other type. I find vegetarians to be the worst sort of hypocrite in these sort of discussions.

I don’t care what you eat or where it grows, and if truth be told, nor do you.
A few herbs on your windowsill and a Peta wristband do not an animal advocate or steward make.
The world isn’t only black and white, when you can understand that, you will find your hypocrisy and rage less debilitating.
