(not satire – it’s the Lib Dems!)
(UPDATE – in the latest YouGov European voting intention poll for the Sunday Times the Greens have overtaken the Lib Dems: UKIP 29%, LAB 28%, CON 22%, GREEN 8%, LDEMS 7%)
I’ve been following politics for a long, long time and it’s hard to overestimate the unprecedented and massive collapse in support facing the Liberal Democrats at the next European, local and general elections.
A relatively unmentioned recent phenomenon in UK politics is the gradual but consistent rise of the Greens in the opinion polls – who are now chasing the Lib Dems into 5th place for the European elections.
Here’s the latest polling from YouGov from the European elections (the most reliable polling company in my opinion):
LAB 29%, UKIP 28%, CON 22%, LDEM 9%, GREEN 8%
Of course I’m well aware that voting patterns are different for the European elections as compared to general elections where minor parties are traditionally heavily squeezed by the two biggest parties.
But nevertheless, in polling for the general election too the Lib Dems are now consistently behind UKIP and if the rise of the Greens continues I think it’s safe to say we no longer have the three party system we’ve been so used to having in the UK for at least a century.
What we could be seeing here is nothing less than the end of the Liberal Democrats as a major political party in the UK.
Bye bye Nick.

The thing is after the pasting the lib dems will take, just not only in europe where the majority don’t agree with their position, but also the general election, just 5 years after the sea change in their position which returned the most mp’s for generations, is down to having supported the most fascist anti poor needy, incapacitated, and disabled government ever to have been in power, and ignored what the liberals have believed in for decades to hold on to an illusion of power, no one will trust them for a very long time they will disappear back into the shadows and it is all down to Cleggs selfish mismanagement.

I’m sure that a few Lib-Fem MPs will still be elected in May 2015.
For example, there’s the Bullock Smithy seat of Andrew Stunnel, which would elect a pig to Parliament if it worn a yellow rosette and claimed to be the Lib-Dem candidate.

As much as I despise the LibDems for enabling the most pernicious government in modern history, I take no joy from these figures.
Ukip getting 28-36% depending which poll you believe should be more of a concern than the yellow bellies’ demise.
They scare the crap out of me.

I reckon we can expect the Liberal Democrat Party to collapse after the 2015 election. In that event, I think the Orange Bookers would defect to the Conservative Party (which is where, ideologically, they belong – one of my commenters talked about them all being adherents of traditional Whig “power of new money uber alles” thinking and I like his description of the current government as “Whiggery-pokery”). There might be a rump Liberal Party left behind – the LD MP in my own constituency, Brecon and Radnorshire, is a former Labour Party member so I don’t expect him to join the Tories – but they’d be a spent force.

Im not really sure who they will join Mike, it’s not clear what they actually stand for anymore, I don’t think you can call the LD left wing or even centre left, although the leadership doesn’t necessarily reflect the members and non member voters, which would infer joining the tories, but I think they will go to other parties as well the greens could benefit more than most from this meltdown.

In some ways it’s sad that Clegg’s opportunism has brought the party close to extinction, thus marginalising the party that did the most in the 19th century to develop modern civil liberties and the tradition of democratic government, and produced one of the greatest Prime Ministers this country has ever had in the figure of Gladstone. However, their conduct in joining the Tories and willingly supporting their programme of welfare cuts, privatisation and the persecution of the poor and sick in favour of a Neoliberal economic programme means that they are getting exactly what they deserve. And students in particular have not forgotten or forgiven Clegg for the way he broke his promise not to raise tuition fees, and then his glib excuse afterwards for so doing. The tripling of the fees has led to all but the richest being further in debt. About a quarter of students will suffer from depression during their time at university, and increased worries about money won’t help. They feel bitterly betrayed, and Clegg rightly has earned their hatred and contempt.
