Tory councillor Les Ford – deputy leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council – said at a public meeting that he thinks disabled children are a “burden”.
And when asked to apologise for his offensive remarks, Cllr Ford dug himself into an even deeper hole by explaining that he meant disabled children were not a burden on their families but were a burden on councils “….. because we have to pay for these people.”

Politicians are a burden. Still, nice to see a Tory slip up and let his “Nice Mask” slip..if this story gets airtime, what will the chances be of Dave mentioning his disabled son as his usual get-out-of-jail-free card?

well at least that is the truth and as far as I’m aware that given free speech would be the position of most tory map’s and in this case councillors

I don’t often disagree with Tom’s take on things, and I guess the councillor’s comments could (and did) create offence, but I have been disabled since the age of 6 months, 67 years now, and I was a considerable burden ( definition: a heavy load) on my parents for at least 20 years. They were quite prepared/happy to bear that burden, but don’t kid yourself that disabled kids/adults are not a burden on their families/society – this does not mean that we’re not prepared to accept that responsibility.
Let’s not be too keen to crap on everything the Cons do or say, there’s ample genuinely offensive/disgusting behaviour on the part of most of them.

This seems to be becoming more openly expressed amongst the Tory local apparatus. You may already have heard about Swindon Mayor Martin who made outrageous comments about disabled peoples sex lives. The subsequent wriggling jiggling and attempts to have a decision from the so called Scrutiny Committee delayed meant that he has only now been censured and resigned as mayor. I don’t know how any tory can be callous, but there again it is a part of being a tory member. They are all coming out of the woodwork now as they think that they can get away with saying anything. It doesn’t surprise me that they have this arrogance and attitude to say whatever they want, as the people of the UK have let everything slide whilst the tory led coalition do what the hell they like.
I wonder if he would feel the same way if he had had a disabled child or indeed a disabled grandchild?
I also wonder if he would say what he said to his lord and master Cameron? After all, he was a parent of a disabled child, and had he still been alive would have been a “burden” to parents? Society? Monetary?
I do believe he should resign, or made to. His apology has no depth in it, it just says what he said first in a different way.

Tory Councillor Les Ford’s wages and expenses are a “burden” to the taxpayer. His moronic comments are a disgrace, but what do you expect from someone who obviously lacks empathy and humility with a “I’m alright Jack” mentality. I for one want to live in a humane society where we take care of the vulnerable. Rich or poor, educated or uneducated having a child with disabilities can happen to any family
