(not satire – it’s the Tories!)
Tory councillor Les Ford – deputy leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council – said at a public meeting that he thinks disabled children are a “burden”.
And when asked to apologise for his offensive remarks, Cllr Ford dug himself into an even deeper hole by explaining that he meant disabled children were not a burden on their families but were a burden on councils “….. because we have to pay for these people.”
Here’s the full story from the Chester Chronicle:
Deputy council leader in ‘special needs’ storm
Could this be part of a local election strategy by the Tory Party to win back votes from UKIP by trying to be even more foot-in-the-mouth offensive than they already are?

Politicians are a burden. Still, nice to see a Tory slip up and let his “Nice Mask” slip..if this story gets airtime, what will the chances be of Dave mentioning his disabled son as his usual get-out-of-jail-free card?

This attitude probably explains why nobody representing the government showed up at the disability deaths tribunal on Wednesday.

Proof that the nasty eugenicist mind-set that showed itself with Thatcher’s mentor, Keith Joseph, is still around. Joseph in the 1970s caused a storm of criticism when he ranted about how the poor and undereducated were having too many babies and threatening to outbreed more solid elements of the population. They were, he said, producing intellectually retarded children, who were threatening our national stock. Remember that part of the eugenicist campaign for the sterilisation of defective individuals was that they were not only ‘dysgenic’, but also a burden to society and the state. Thus they promoted the abortion of disabled children in films like ‘I Don’t Want To Be Born’. This policy culminated in the organised mass murder of those they considered to be incurably mentally ill or retarded under the supervision of Hitler’s personal doctor, before the programme was stopped due to public outrage led by the Roman Catholic nobleman, Count Galen. Ford is just another offensive Tory loudmouth, rather than a Nazi, but for many people his comments are strongly reminiscent of that part of Nazi ideology.

well at least that is the truth and as far as I’m aware that given free speech would be the position of most tory map’s and in this case councillors
thankfully the truth always slips out even for habitual liars

I don’t often disagree with Tom’s take on things, and I guess the councillor’s comments could (and did) create offence, but I have been disabled since the age of 6 months, 67 years now, and I was a considerable burden ( definition: a heavy load) on my parents for at least 20 years. They were quite prepared/happy to bear that burden, but don’t kid yourself that disabled kids/adults are not a burden on their families/society – this does not mean that we’re not prepared to accept that responsibility.
Let’s not be too keen to crap on everything the Cons do or say, there’s ample genuinely offensive/disgusting behaviour on the part of most of them.

This seems to be becoming more openly expressed amongst the Tory local apparatus. You may already have heard about Swindon Mayor Martin who made outrageous comments about disabled peoples sex lives. The subsequent wriggling jiggling and attempts to have a decision from the so called Scrutiny Committee delayed meant that he has only now been censured and resigned as mayor. I don’t know how any tory can be callous, but there again it is a part of being a tory member. They are all coming out of the woodwork now as they think that they can get away with saying anything. It doesn’t surprise me that they have this arrogance and attitude to say whatever they want, as the people of the UK have let everything slide whilst the tory led coalition do what the hell they like.
I wonder if he would feel the same way if he had had a disabled child or indeed a disabled grandchild?
I also wonder if he would say what he said to his lord and master Cameron? After all, he was a parent of a disabled child, and had he still been alive would have been a “burden” to parents? Society? Monetary?
I do believe he should resign, or made to. His apology has no depth in it, it just says what he said first in a different way.

Tory Councillor Les Ford’s wages and expenses are a “burden” to the taxpayer. His moronic comments are a disgrace, but what do you expect from someone who obviously lacks empathy and humility with a “I’m alright Jack” mentality. I for one want to live in a humane society where we take care of the vulnerable. Rich or poor, educated or uneducated having a child with disabilities can happen to any family
