(not satire – it’s the Mail!)
The Mail on Sunday sent out one of its most experienced reporters to do a hatchet job on food banks and Citizens’ Advice Centres today.
Mail hack Ross Slater even lied to a Citizens’ Advice Centre for his article to see how easy it would be to get vouchers for a foodbank.
But Mr Slater didn’t do a very good job, did he:

‘So, people, do we want food banks supplementing what seem like reasonable questions with demands for i.d. and more ‘stringent’ interrogations? Or would we prefer them to engage with the human beings in difficult circumstances who come to them with respect – and by and large take it as read that they are not lying journalists with fat salaries?
Shame the Mail doesn’t give a bit more energy to how come so many are relying on food banks, and what we can all do about it, really….’.
Thanks, Tom.

personally i would never use a food bank under any circumstances and just die and there will be people of very high integrity in the same situation who may ask for help and if to many questions are asked will just disappear
those with mental conditions would be more likely to give up and leave rather then to fill in a form
all that’s needed by a food bank charity is a little common sense and I’m sure in most cases that is what they hand out
the last thing they need is the likes of fools from the daily mail interfering while those at the food banks are helping out for free

how about interviewing people who are using foodbanks and getting their stories, rather than acting the part of someone in need ? This Daily Mail article is shameful in its intent and does nothing to promote ethical journalism/understanding of the problem…it’s not even competent journalism…

they also made a fuss about the quantity price and weight of the food….1,there was not enough food for a family of 4 for 3 days, it was supposedly the equivalent of 12 days food for 1…2, tinned and processed foods are heavy, not as healthy as fresh, and expensive, but do suit shelf life as in food banks. 3, people often return food coz they can’t afford to cook it…4, there is no substitute for the dignity of a wellbeing income for all on benefits…..end sanctions, conditionality, scrap the WCA, cap rents drastically reduce rents and build more eco-homes, food coops, food growing coops, work share etc etc…begin the green revolution, no! to using the poor as carbon sinks…

ps there are also many millions such as t2 diabetic’s with special dietary needs that may not be met by food banks…but may be met by the low cost social supermarket models as in germany…they are perhaps worth investigating, as they are now beginning to open in the uk…

Is there not an element of fraud (or at least, misrepresentation) involved in what this reporter did?
Surely his actions should be looked at by Nottingham Police?

While we might get a laugh from the stupidity of this venal piece of vermin, he’s stolen food that doesn’t belong to him that could go to someone in genuine need.
On that alone he should be strung up.

Hardly a surprise that a Mail reporter is a lying bastard or even, as in this case, a thick lying bastard, but don’t they employ someone to proof read the stories to check they make sense (albeit a form of sense that passes the bigoted Mail standard)?

I so hope that they get their comeuppance with this. The reporter has committed fraud and should be reported to the police.
These foodbanks are needed desperately and now I read that some people are going to stop supporting them due to this piece of lying scum.
I really hope there is a big backlash with this!

Technically, that’s a fuck-up by whoever wrote the headline. Headlines aren’t written by the person who writes the article, they’re written by sub-editors. Don’t ask me why, it’s newspaper thing.
Anyway, nice to see that the backlash from this nasty smear attempt has led (a) to him having to wipe his entire (5 year old) Twitter account, and (b) to the food bank getting over £20,000 in donations today. 🙂

Yeah, part of the reason for that might be that he put his mobile number on there. (Un)fortunately someone screengrabbed it first.
I suspect Mr Slater realised that he kind of shat on his own doorstep. He lives in Ilkeston, which is pretty much the archetypal point on the graph where “the poor” and “Mail readers” intersect. I would imagine that he will not be a popular man there right now.
You’re right that the headline was probably provided by a sub-editor. But it does show that, if they don’t get the story they want, they don’t let that stop them.

we need to be careful to avoid generalizing in that people who are long term ill get hungry and will use a food bank nothing could be further from the truth

I saw the original tweet about this and commented then that, apart from being sloppy and distasteful gutter journalism, Ross Slater and the Daily Mail had committed fraud. I feel that en masse, we should petition Nottingham Police and the benefits agency/local authority to fully investigate and persue a case for prosecution of the above named. Any refusal to do so is a dereliction of duty.

What do you expect from a pathetic Tory rag like the Mail, typical of their point of view, attack the charity/poor for using these food banks, instead of investigating the real cause, aka, this Condem “government” who have done more damage to the populace in 4 years than the previous Labour government did in 13.

I hope he now realises that the age old saying ‘you should never take a dump on your own doorstep’ really is true. But then I suppose he wouldn’t know what truth was if it bit his testicles, kicked him in the head and said ‘i’m truth’. Sadly some gullible morons will believe this tripe as truth and stop supporting the very people who are trying to stop this country sliding into a pit of poverty.

I have written to CAB asking them to confirm that they have made a “complaint” (without which the Police will not do anything). The actual offence is detailed in the article itself – so that should not be difficult. The journalist newspaper will claim “Public Interest” in their defence. So it is up to us to make it clear that we do not consider this article to be in our interests.
