Tory councillors in Thatcher’s former constituency of Finchley and Barnet were convinced there would be plenty of residents willing to volunteer to have their street renamed after the former PM.
A year ago, Tory-controlled Barnet Council leader Richard Cornelius said:
“There must be a road full of Tories. We are looking for one to come forward.”
But a year later there has not been one application for the name change:
Anyone fancy living in Margaret Thatcher Way?
You can’t blame Barnet residents.
Imagine what naming your street after a close friend of paedophile Jimmy Savile would do to property prices?

I hope that a road is found. She was one of our greatest Prime Ministers. She freed us from the dead hand of the unions and put Arthur Scargill where he belonged.

How true Paul, she was kind of famous for saying “the lady’s not for turning”? I found your comment worthy of an answer all the way from Christchurch, New Zealand. I lived in Bristol during the 70’s and early 80’s and could not get over how miliitaristic and authoritarian Mrs. Thatcher was, in fact, I ended up leaving the U.K. before she was re-elected after the Falklands Island war. Living a country that allowed Americans to use their precious land for keeping Cruise missiles pointed at countries who may or may not send a missile towards Europe was stupid in the extreme. In fact we can see from recent events how the relationship between Europe and the United States has evolved – as far as I can see it is a one-way system…

“A road full of Tories”, “Perhaps a street will come forward”. My god, are roads, and streets so politically active in that area? I’ll have to carefully watch the road nearby to see what it’s up to. Thankfully, there are no Streets in the vicinity, but the next time I make it into town, rest assured, the first Street I see I will give it a stern talking to!

How about naming a street after Tony Blair, and starting the house numbers at 100,000, to remember the number of innocent Iraqi people he and his party killed?
Foul as Thatcher and her party were, she didn’t get anywhere near causing as much death and misery as Blair and New Labour did.

Well I’ve just been to the council offices in Southend, and they’re closed to the public now – instead you’re redirected behind the courthouse to a certain Margaret Thatcher House.
What an appropriate place for the public to go and argue about council tax or benefits. Least you know where they stand.

When the truth emerged fairly recently about Savile, plaques were removed, charities were closed, street signs were changed, buildings were renamed…… In Scarborough, Yorks, where Savile colluded with local Mayor Peter Jaconelli [a Cyril Smith character], there was a ‘Savile’s View’ — but after graffiti was heaped on it, it was renamed.
If a street were ever named after Maggie Thatcher, imagine the graffiti & horse dung that would be heaped on it …. from sundry well-wishers
