(not satire – it’s the Tories!)
Conservative councillors in Tory-controlled Croydon council decided to spend over £140 million on a lavish new HQ for themselves.
No expense has been spared on their cosy new offices – the building comes complete with taps costing £272 each and a £410 umbrella-wrapping machine (I kid you not).
Mind you, at the same time, the council has been telling residents money is so tight that cuts will have to be made to services for the elderly, the disabled, people with mental health problems, youth programmes and children’s care programmes including the axing of school crossing patrols:

Unfortunately, this isn’t the only case in which a council has massively cut back on services, while at the same time awarding themselves increased benefits. Private Eye in its ‘Rotten Boroughs’ column over the years has covered an almost endless stream of similar stories. The guilty councils often include not only Tories and Lib Dems, but also Labour. It’s another indication of the skewed, self-serving attitude prevalent across much of the political class, and the cynicism with which so many approach their position.

I wonder if anyone has looked into whether anyone on the council benefitted from the money spent on the new buildings?

All councils have ‘close’ relationships with local businesses. It’s not usually that cash changes hands, but favours are done both ways. There are countless councillors have had house extensions or similar things done at a bargain price by contractors to whom they previously awarded a council contract.

Tory councillors seem to be just as hellbent on spending our hard earned taxes on schemes which provide great value – if you’re one of them – as their parliamentary colleagues. Bully for them, boo for the rest of us.

Disgraceful and very, very sad for all those being affected by the cuts. I think the only way to stop this is to go to the meetings and question everything and get on to local and parish councils to stop this nonsense. Much easier for them as they have the old boy networks but we have to build our own!

Well said Amnesiaclinic. I totally agree. The only reason why these things can happen is because as citizens we allow them to happen. I for one have decided enough is enough, and to fight back.
