(not satire – it’s the UK today!)
A severely disabled and sick man – who had his benefits stopped after ATOS found he was ‘fit’ for work – has died of malnutrition.
Mark Wood’s GP said if either ATOS or the Department for Work and Pensions had contacted him he would have said in his professional opinion Mr Wood was not fit for work.
But Mr Wood’s GP was not contacted by either ATOS or anyone from the DWP.
Here’s Mark Wood’s tragic story from theĀ Oxford Mail:
Man starved after benefits were cut
So now in this country we’re leaving vulnerable people to literally starve to death.
A new low even for the Tories and Liberal Democrats, surely?

this government places trust in a foreign, privately owned body to make unprofessional judgements on people , without recommendation via proper medically trained professionals…
Then people, who are vulnerable/ in danger suffer/ die…
It’s the same government that allocates those facilities / benefits to scum from abroad, who profit from those peoples losses..
TIME FOR ALL OF THEM TO GO….
ATOS / current administration/ foreign scroungers
CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME.. and proper distribution has to apply..
DON’T TURN UP AT OUR DOOR IF YOU CAN’T/ WON’T SUPPORT YOURSELVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Government says money is no object for flood victims but when it comes to societys most vulnerable it talks about there being none left for them. This speaks volumes for their priorities.

Don’t speak too soon. Now that ATOS has announced that it will end its government contract, what will replace it? Could it be something far worse? Does anyone seriously think this government (or a Labour one) is capable of coming up with a solution which actually works and is fair? Look at the history of the last few decades!

Well probably the Gestapo G4$ or the fraudulent A4E or Crapita, or even a renamed ATOS under the guise of OHassist…. doesn’t matter which as the Unum/DWP descriptors will remain lop sided to force people to die and starve and continue to ignore the courts ruling on mental heath.

A4E take 2nd place here, as their claims of helping people back to work is a joke… 1% success rate, if anyone is offered it by their local jobcentre.. DO NOT enrol.. they will get locked into a 2 years of demeaning farce.
they will start interfering , and they will STILL have to go for meetings every 2 weeks , that really annoys a potential employer…

One of the letters to the Oxford Mail stated that over 11,000 people who have been classified as fit for work by ATOS subsequently DIED within 6 weeks of that decision being reached. They either died from the medical condition that ATOS considered too trivial to prevent them from working full time or from SUICIDE brought on by the pressure of the ATOS decision.
In view of the fact that the mainstream media failed to report this poor mans death from starvation I can’t find any comfort in their failure to report the figure of 11,000 as I am by no means certain that such an avoidable catastrophe WOULD be reported openly.

A very disturbing case. Dying of malnutrition is a slow process. The `benefit scroungers` myth seems to be working as there is still a hard core of the electorate commenting in those terms in newspaper articles. How bad does it have to get?
LikeLike
Believe it or not but this was discussed, briefly, on the BBC breakfast news today when someone doing the paper review brought it up – they all looked amazed – but said nowt. The media in the UK is colluding with the deaths of thousands of people, keeping it hidden as per government requirements and carrying on brazenly in this knowledge. Now, who’s going to be the first to fall, I wonder?
Anybody still disagreeing with the stark reality of fascism in this country deserves to be shot. Cameron and Osborne and IDS are responsible for crimes against humanity but the media want to look at Ukraine or China or even Kevin Pietersen to distract us from the truth. Meanwhile, the UN in knowledge of all of this sends someone over to slap a few wrists…………………..we are on our own people.

the saddest thing I have read in ages. I have had experience Atos myself and even I found the experience deeply traumatic, heaven only knows how this poor man coped (well, evidently he didn’t actually).
However, Atos are only doing the government’s dirty work for them. They are given targets to meet regarding the percentage of passes/refusals, and the government, by keeping removed from the actual decision making, is able to blame Atos and claim innocence. It’s why they love privatisation, it enables them to achieve their aims but keep their hands clean. Another private contractor will still be in the same position and given the same objectives, allowing the government to remain at arms length but still calling the shots.

that’s not quite true, as I know a lot of their ” healthcare professionals” that do these assessments, couldn’t give a damn about being impartial

Absolutely right! Contracting out a problem means that the blame when things go wrong is also contracted out. This is why consultants and ‘special advisors’ are so massively used in government and business. It’s not because they have anything to say which isn’t already known, it simply allows those in charge to claim that it wasn’t their fault.
LikeLike
So, are you saying they are just individuals who get some sort of perverse enjoyment from the misery they cause..? That’s even worse! I’m sure they must be incentivised in some way. I did read when the scheme was first introduced that the government “expected” (i.e. required) a particular percentage of cases to be rejected.

I would return responsibility of assessment of ability to work to the claimant’s own GP, with specialist assessment referred by the GP to the relevant local NHS specialist unit.
It was Labour under Tony Blair which contracted it out to ATOS.

In your world people would sent to prison for their sexuality, there would be no GP service so people with ‘bad genes’ would just get sick and die, and all government would be replaced by internet polls. Is that about right?
LikeLike
predictably wrong! Those with bad genes would be pumped with legal drugs to keep the drug companies rich, because they are usually the only ones that benefit from them, certainly not the patients. It won’t be long before the poor will be without any health service once they privatize it anyway, so privatization might be doing them a favour, get rid of the deadhead gp’s,
the whimpering gay community would be pumped full of botox, vitamins and age reducing creams in an effort to look young but end up looking even older, while swallowing valium and visiting private counsellors to alleviate their self imposed anxieties that the heterosexual community wants to put them in jail for NOTHING OTHER THAN THEIR SEXUALITY.
Yes all government should be replaced with internet polls, that would fxxk you and your kind right up wouldn’t it?
If you were a REAL man you would not be on here arguing the toss with me.

Of course, decisions on a persons health should be made by UNBIASED, properly qualified health professionals solely on the basis of the patient’s often complex issues (usually a GP or specialist) not by an administrator ticking boxes on a preset questionnaire. How can we get back to this situation? I wish I knew. Government just will not allow it because of the resultant rise in benefit costs, and as we know, it is cutting these that is th who their prime objective.
On the other side of the coin. There were/are plenty of GPs quite willing to sign people off work unnecessarily, often long term, through laziness, intimidation, over cautiousness, corruption or whatever because it made no difference to them – did not affect their own budget or income.
It’s a difficult one.

Irena – Why would returning the responsibility to GPs and local NHS specialists mean a rise in costs? I would have thought it would cost less, because these healthcare professionals would already know the claimant and their medical history, so in most cases a new and expensive medical examination would not be necessary.
I agree that there could be a degree of laziness, intimidation, over-cautiousness, corruption or whatever from some GPs, so some spot-checks by an independent body of doctors would be necessary.

In reply to fink first. I am assuming the gov. are scared that more people would be signed off sick so the benefits bill would go up. However, you are right. In truth it probably wouldn’t cost more because a whole unnecessary level in the process (that of Atos) with it’s associated costs (wages, profit) would be eliminated.
