(not satire – it’s the Daily Mail!)

Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive“- Sir Walter Scott

On Sunday the Mail on Sunday did a hatchet job on the Met Office as part of the newspaper’s long-term efforts to discredit and deny scientific evidence of global climate change (warning – more Daily Mail dross):

No, global warming did NOT cause the storms

The ‘article’ was so full of inaccuracies the Met Office even took the unusual step of writing an official response to it today:

Met Office in the Media: response by Professor Mat Collins and the Met Office

But what was most interesting for me about the article was its author  – a man called David Rose.

Who is he?

David Rose seems to be what is known by some people in the trade as a ‘fixer’.

‘Fixers’ obviously ‘fix’ things – in his case, Rose specialises in ‘fixing’ tricky problems which are inconveniencing parts of the more conservative parts of the establishment – by using spin, disinformation and pure lies.

Rose is a major player in the disinformation campaign being waged in the media by powerful oil interests and right-wing politicians keen to deny the human causes of climate change. See just a few examples of his many articles herehere and here.

And interestingly, Rose was also a big part of the disinformation campaign that was waged before the invasion of Iraq – see here.

Not only that, but for some years now Rose has been specialising in discrediting child abuse victims who have accused establishment figures of paedophilia and sex abuse, as well as trying to discredit child abuse investigations as a whole – see a couple of examples here and here.

And here’s a previous blog post of mine highlighting how Rose tried to discredit a lawyer who was working on behalf of child abuse victims:

Daily Mail ‘fixer’ David Rose defends paedophilia accused and attacks child abuse victims. Again.

And as if all that wasn’t enough, Rose also used to work on behalf of MI6.

He’s threatened to sue people for saying that before now. But don’t worry folks, he can’t sue because it’s true. How do I know it’s true? Because he’s actually admitted it himself:

Spies and their lies

In fact, David Rose isn’t a professional journalist at all. He’s more like a professional agent provocateur – paid by powerful interests to smear people they don’t like, lie and spin on their behalf and spread disinformation.

And the best way to counter his lies is to make sure as many people as possible know exactly who he is.

So please feel free to share this information.
