(not satire – it’s the Tories!)
Some Tory councils are now charging children to play.
Conservative-controlled Wandsworth council bulldozed a public playground in Battersea Park, spent £250,000 on building a new one and then handed it over to a private company which is going to charge parents £20 for each child to use.
Here’s the full story from the London Evening Standard:
The council playground in London that costs £20 a time
.
Is there anything the Tories won’t sell? Their own grandmothers? Oh hang on, no – they’ve already done that.

Well, that’s Wandsworth. Having been a resident I’m surprised they haven’t privatised the pavements and sold them to developers as ransom strips. Battersea Park – built for the public good, 19thC, a green lung for the poor of the surrounding area – and there are still many – stolen & privatised by the Tory minions, after years of not-so-benign neglect.

This is the Tories’ notion of “freedom” in a nutshell – to make money off of anything and everything, and if other people suffer that’s tough.
Tory freedom means freedom for private businesses, not freedom for citizens…

Bizarrely, our cursed Coalition government has now been around so long that I no longer even bat an eyelid at this kind of revelation.
It’s still wrong; it still needs to be exposed; it still needs to be fought.

This is outrageous! They tell us to let our kids play out, to get exercise, to help them socialise, to stop them sitting in front of a games console, on the Internet or watching TV!
Then they charge the parents for the kids to basically use what was essentially a local park!
You’d honestly think this was a plot line in The Thick Of It (TV comedy which is so true to the real behind the scenes way of Government that it’s totally believable) not actual real Council/Government activity!
Sadly yet again we are let down by the people WE PAY to manage things! I’m beginning to think a class of 10 yr olds could do a better job! They would have more common sense & a sense of right, wrong, justice & how to be a servant to the public!

If children don’t have £20 to go the playground they shouldn’t be playing anyway. They should be working to earn money so they can afford to go. Why should the hard-working taxpayer pay for children to do something as non-productive as playing? Just imagine what the person driving off in his luxury car to his well-paid job is going to think when he sees children playing in the playground at his expense. There he is striving to get on and children are just wasting their time playing.

You’ve just got to love the Tories for their pure guile; only they could happily make money from children. Next? Charge them for oxygen.

I’m no fan of Wandsworth Council, but biased and inaccurate reports like this do nothing to help fight them.
The Council is *not* selling off the new £250K adventure playground that it built. That will remain in place, and will be free for all.
They *are* leasing off some of the space that was occupied by the old, larger, adventure playground, and this is where GoApe will be setting up their £24-a-time facility.
(Whether it’s right that they replaced what was a staffed Adventure Playground, suitable for all ages, with a smaller, unstaffed, less adventurous one; or whether it’s right to lease off an area of a *Public* park for something that only the wealthy will be able to use, is a separate issue.)

I thought we lived in a free society, nothing could be further from the truth. It should be free for any child to play as it’s part of their development. I’m glad I don’t live in London but it won’t be long until this spreads around the country. And like everything else, the cost will increase, gradually. What sort of society are we creating?

There’s not a lot of local farmland, woodland, or streams in Wandsworth – and it’s probably not a good idea for Kids to play in the Thames!

I think we have to get our facts right. That does not make what they are doing on public ground right as I have noticed this trend of opening restaurants for the wealthy in parks so it is a trend we need to watch for.
I certainly won’t be holding my breath about a change of government. Perhaps the faces may change but the agenda rolls on.
The only way to stop this is grassroots participation in local, parish and town councils and then going forward to take on parliament. There are 2 doctors standing for the EU elections in May on a platform of saving the NHS. If you saw A& E last night before Benefits Street you will realise that hospitals are being unfairly penalised and sanctioned. There’s that nice word again. Actually, strangled would be abetter description.
Please don’t sit back and hope there will be change in 2015. Be the change you want to see!!
