Not quite sure how I missed this one.
Last December, Bayer CEO Marijn Dekkers admitted a cancer drug it had developed (Nexavar) was not for developing markets (ie ones full of poor people) but had been developed for rich western patients who can afford it.
Here’s the exact quote:
“We did not develop this product (Nexavar) for the Indian market, let’s be honest. We developed this product for western patients who can afford this product, quite honestly, it is an expensive product.”
Dekkers also called the Indian regulator’s decision to authorize a local drugmaker to produce a generic copy of Nexavar which is affordable to most Indians as “essentially theft“.
