(not satire – it’s the Daily Mail!)
Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre – whose newspaper really likes to rant a lot about how evil all things EU are – is not averse to pocketing a few hundred thousand Euro here and there from the EU in subsidies when it suits him.
Here’s the exact figure he’s pocketed in EU subsidies for his estate in Scotland (from farmsubsidy.org):
I suppose Dacre thinks it’s all right just as long as nobody notices.
So best keep it to ourselves then.

Cut farm subsidies and food prices will increase, supremarket’s already have a high mark up price on meat, fish, fruit and veg.
If anyone thinks that agricultural land should be sold off to property developers and we import our food, they should think again.
Perhaps the state should own all agricultural land and produce for the benefit of it’s people, cutting out the middle men and rich land owners, because even farmer’s markets where they cut out the supermarket are overcharging for produce.

This used to be the sort of revelation that could ruin a career. Now, it seems as long as nobody is told about it, nobody bothers too much. The watchwords seem to be, as Tom says, “Best keep it to ourselves.”
NO! Let’s spread it around and see if anything else gets shaken out of the woodwork.

I know that nuggy, they could be running cannabis farms for all we know, that is why agricultural land should be state owned and run by tenant farmers.

Britain is inside the EU Common Agricultural Policy. Some payments are discretionary and have to be individually applied for. The Single Farm Payment is part of the price/cost structure of the CAP . It replaced the former guaranteed commodity prices which caused the grain mountains etc.
I was in a business which made animal feed. At the time we could reclaim a subsidy for every ton of wheat or milk powder we “denatured” by making it unfit for human consumption in animal feed. If we had not claimed it, we could never have competed with firms which did and would have had to close down. I could also have been accused of hypocrisy because I was opposed to the EU and the money came to a massive amount. But it was just part of the unavoidable system inside the EU loony bin. It meant that we stayed in business. So I think this claimed scandal is itself hypocritical
Incidentally the Daily Mail is a EUROPHILE paper. It criticises the EU a lot but, like the Conservative leadership, believes we must always stay in it
