(not satire – it’s the Tory Party!)
In an extraordinary and farcical sequence of events, it is alleged that a Conservative parliamentary candidate has been mistakenly selected in a selection primary after local party officials miscounted the ballot papers.
The alleged mistake was apparently only noticed after an activist took the ballot papers home and recounted them:
Lucy Frazer faces uncertain future as South East Cambridgeshire Conservative candidate
And what was the reaction from the local Conservative Association to this monumental cock up?
Oh they decided to pretend the whole thing didn’t happen and to keep her as their candidate anyway:
Conservatives vote to keep Lucy Frazer as parliamentary candidate after miscount claims
That’s democracy – Conservative style!

If this had happened in a union election (which it can’t since they are supervised professionally) imagine the reaction in the Tory press- ‘Ballot rigging fiasco-Union Chaos’ and so on.
But since it is the Tory Party they just carry on regardless.

Of course they kept her as the candidate. They’d look pretty damn stupid if they didn’t.

If they can’t calculate their expenses correctly or most of the stats dressed as facts behind the rhetoric, are we surprised?

That’s actually worse than the Labour constituency party whose selection committee ruled that members could only vote on whether their preferred choice should be the candidate, having blocked the challenger at interview stage. After asking questions that were exclusively about campaigning, their excuse was that the challenger did not show enough knowledge about a constituency MP’s duties.

They’re supposed to be the party that can do sums and things. But would have thought the people who voted for the majority candidate would have put up a bit of a storm.

Well, it rather confirms that since one Tory is much the same as any other, it doesn’t matter who their candidates are.

Another piece of electoral comedy from the Conservative party. It really gives you confidence in their ability to uphold the great traditions of this country, ensuring fair and free elections with absolutely no hint of gerrymandering, voting fraud or other misdemeanours … Oh, come on, this is the Tories, who only got into power through forming a coalition government with the Lib Dems. The Tories now are doing their best to be the Republicans’ UK branch, so it’s to be expected they’d pick up a few bad habits from Dubya!

I, too, resigned after being an active member and campaigner in South East Cambs constituency for well over 25 years. I will not be a part of corrupt and underhand practices. As Bongo has said, there was a ‘whiff’ of some ‘gongs’ on offer surrounding that meeting, and if certain people did the right (for ‘right’ read ‘wrong’) thing, they would be well rewarded. Still, I suppose the Judas’s have to earn their 30 pieces of silver. The meeting was a complete stitch up. The amount of pressure put on members by the hierarchy was tremendous. Our current MP, who should never have been there, as he stated he had ‘kept out’ of the selection process, pushed strongly for the status quo. Strange, really, as two very prominent and hard working Councillors who had put their names forward for consideration for this seat were barred from the meeting on the grounds that it was ‘still part of the selection process’. Ms Frazer, again, who should never have been at that meeting, and was actually allowed to address the meeting, was introduced as the Prospective Parliamentary Candidate – which effectively means that the selection process was over; so why were those two people barred? And if the selection process was not over, what were Jim Paice and Ms Frazer doing there? The whole process stinks from start to finish. I asked the question concerning allowing candidates to ask for a recount if they desired. This was never answered, and one of the Central Office apparatchiks at the meeting finally admitted that the rule was unworkable!! It was interesting that, despite the huge pressure exerted on those present, over a third of us – and that is a lot in normally ‘loyal’ Conservative meetings – voted against the motion to retain Ms Frazer; and what was more interesting was that those who were against included the Leaders of both South Cambs and East Cambs District Councils, the former leader of the County Council, many Councillors and most of the true activists in the Party. Never mind, the ‘great and the good’ from Ely can come and do all the delivering, canvassing, etc! I now know of at least eight people who have resigned over this issue. The local Conservative Association exists in name only, and is a shambles; and they have bought it upon themselves.
