In an article for the Daily Mail, the Education Secretary Michael Gove has condemned what he called ‘left-wing’ academics for portraying the deaths of 16 million people during the First World War as not being very nice.
Mr Gove also slammed modern historians for attempting to “whitewash” the fun aspects of standing up to your waist in human excrement and mud and having your limbs blown off while awaiting the command to go over the top to your certain death.
In a related development, the Education Secretary also signalled his intention to ensure history text books covering the Second World War in British schools highlight the more amusing and enjoyable aspects of life in a Nazi concentration camp with particular stress on teaching the funnier side of the events leading up to the deaths of 6 million Jews in the Holocaust.

Well said Tom.
Of course, mr Crosby is right behind this.
Most Australians celebrate ANZAC’s day. Lets see how Gove tries to re write history with Australia and anyone who knew anyone who fought in either war.
I do.

Gove’s attempt to make party capital out of the tragedy of the Great War is pathetic. Many of the revisionist historians whom he pretends to appreciate are of the left, and would jump head first into a flooded trench with filled sandbags strapped to their persons before voting for anyone associated with this appalling government.

Isn’t Gove’s timing here just a distraction from the real news about Margaret Thatcher’s involvement with the miners’ strike, another important piece of recent history? It did coincide with the release of the papers on that debacle.. The Miner’s Strike of 1984 is more relevant to voters. Most of the ex miners are still alive and are now kicking whilst Tories are struggling to maintain Thatcher’s credibility.
