(not satire – it’s Iain Duncan Smith)
In an escalation of the war of words between church leaders and the coalition government, the former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams has called Iain Duncan Smith’s remarks on foodbanks “disturbing”.
Dr Williams makes the extraordinary attack on the Work and Pensions Secretary in an interview with local newspaper the Cambridge News:
Rowan Williams criticises Iain Duncan Smith’s “disturbing” remarks about foodbanks
Disturbing? I think the word Dr Williams is actually looking for is ‘evil’.
Or at the very least the work of the Devil.

…and here’s what the current Archbishop of Canterbury has to say about the “injustices facing Britains poor”
IDS is “supposed” to be a Christian isn’t he? I have to say, I’ve seen little evidence of it; let’s hope (and pray) that he begins to take notice of what religious leaders are saying.

This will cause further anger in Tory circles against the Anglican church. There’s a long tradition of Archbishops of Canterbury criticising Conservative governments and their attacks on the poor. I can remember Norman Tebbit getting very sneering about Dr Robert Runcie after he dared to criticise Margaret Thatcher.

This will undoubtedly cause further outrage amongst the Tories. For nearly thirty years now the Archbishops of Canterbury and other leading Christian clerics have been criticising Conservative administrations for their attacks on the poor and vulnerable and apparent lack of Christian values. One of the ladies I knew at College back in the 1980s was moved to write a supportive letter to then Archbishop, Dr Robert Runcie, thanking him for standing up to the poor against Margaret Thatcher. Archbishop Runcie’s comments particularly infuriated Norman Tebbit, as no doubt Dr Williams’ will now. The very Tory blog, ‘Cranmer’, was set up as a religious blog to defend and promote Conservativism amongst Christians, particularly Anglicans, so these comments by church leaders clearly do touch nerves. Expect more comments from Tories along the lines of ‘the church should keep out of politics’, and ‘they should keep to church matters – that way they’d get more in church’. In the meantime, well done to Dr Williams.

Muggie Thatchet left an inheritance of bigotry against the working class, sending thousands to the “dole”. Her heirs now seek to eradicate unemployment with their slavery…oops workfare…policies and those unable to work? Well, an early death would appear to be their final solution of their cut throat (un)welfare policies.
I heard that there is a preponderance of psychopaths in top jobs. They reach these positions because they blame everyone else for failure. Eventually, they run out of scapegoats, their ineptitude becoming all too apparent. Sounds a bit like the present unelected govt, no?

Good for Rowan Williams, someone whose words Ian DaKing Schmidt should not ignore, like he batted off and criticised the Trussell Trust.
And, please, can we stop using soft, comfy words like ‘issue’ when we mean ‘problem’ and ‘reform’ when, in reality, that means ‘we’ve cut to the bone to the point where thousands of people are starving’.
There will be a place for IDS, not in Heaven, but in the North Korean sector of Hell, where no doubt he will be very much at home.
How can I hate, loathe and despise a man I’ve never met? Easily.
The other thing is that the well publicised furore and misery he’s causing with his benefit cuts distracts the public from other serious matters, such as the establishment’s continuing cover ups of high level paedophilia networks.

Sorry guys, if any of you think the Fascist Smith is remotely concerned or worried by this criticism you are either deluded or very sadly mistaken. IDS is very secure in his position supported by the Fascist leader Cameron. Only action by the courts, either uk or European will rid us of these dangerous men.

The archbishop says it is an attack on volunteers and generous donators, I think charity is an attack on those it purports to serve. The government is there to administer justice for all of it’s citizens and make sure all are provided for otherwise why have governance.
The church is there to give spiritual guidance and stand up for the rights of the poor not become charities that take responsibility away from national provision of all who need it.
There has and still is enough tax being paid by the ordinary citizen to make sure nobody needs charity, but it is going to the greedy not the needy.

I didn’t find your blog at all amusing like normal. You’ve obviously gone too far. No right-thinking minister of state would refuse to see the evidence with his own eyes, or scare-monger the public into believing that the unemployed and disabled are work-shy skivers taking the bread from the mouths of strivers’ children. Oh no, that would be beyond irony.

No worries. IDS is a practising Catholic (although despite all that practice still doesn’t seem to be much of a Christian) and so won’t be much worried by criticism from an apostate clergyman ordained by that newfangled, renegade, Church of England. I cannot think of many politicians who have helped so many innocent and harmless people meet their maker as Iain Duncan Smith, who has assisted many sick, disabled, and needy souls to shuffle off this mortal coil and into an early grave.
Who would have thought the face of evil would be so nondescript and bland?
No horns, hooves, tail, or pitchfork and yet Iain Duncan Smith is more cruel, wicked, and devilish than Old Nick himself… and I’m not talking about Nick Clegg here either!

Having heard Rowan Williams speak this year at my husband’s graduation, and read a lot of his writing when studying myself, disturbing for him is a condemnatory word he uses with alll the feeling that us mere mortals often find eludes us without swearing. His speech at Glamorgan was thought provoking and interesting, especially as the wife of one of the few mature students there,

You include a reference to the “Daily Mirror” requesting that it be contacted with stories and examples of those that have been terrorised and hurt by Duncan Smith but, you are wrong so to do.
In actual fact, the “Daily Mirror” freely chooses NOT to publish any of the details of those hurt by Duncan Smith – and will NOT publish the TRUTH that Housing Associations are so routinely morally bankrupt and bereft as to now openly threaten to steal parents children if they do not meet their demands for money with menaces that they call a “Bedroom tax”. None of these ‘Bastions of Democratic freedom’, known as the “free Press”, will publish any of it – despite their having been made well aware of it.
Tom, you need I think, to urgently re-consider your beliefs as to just how low this country has actually sunk into this elitist cotton-mill lunacy
