(not satire – it’s the Tories!)
Senior Tories are openly accusing the police of lying during the so-called ‘plebgate’ incident.
A very different reaction to how senior Tories reacted when people suggested the police may have lied and been part of a conspiracy to smear the victims of the Hillsborough tragedy.
They called those allegations “contemptible”.
Here it is in black and white in a 1996 letter from senior Tory ‘sir’ Bernard Ingham:
Senior Tories also told relatives of those who died to “shut up” about the Hillsborough disaster.
This completely different reaction from senior Tories has of course nothing to do with the fact that the victim of ‘plebgate’ was also a senior Tory whereas the victims of the Hillsborough disaster were obviously not.
They were just, well ….. plebs I suppose?

Some police officers lie in order to protect or further their own interests, just as some politicians lie in order to protect or further their own interests. Which of these two ‘professions’ does so more often? ……. A difficult call!!!!

Bernard Ingram is from a previous generation of politicians both Tory and Labour who mostly naively believed the police did no wrong even if the facts pointed in a different direction. No doubt if Labour had been in power when Hillsborough happened they also would probably have sided with the police then. Also governments tend to go for cover ups if they think they can get away with it, sadly power corrupts.
However, these days most people have a more rounded view of the police and even Tories are more cynical of them than they used to be.

Pretty good at shifting goalposts, TPTB. And yes, that’s all we are in their view, plebs and expendable plebs to boot…thing is, and this is becoming more of a problem for them, we plebs are now well aware of the machinations of Ingham and his sort. And the day will come when they will be brought to account.

No, the IPCC lady reached her conclusions based on the evidence which is in the public domain and is clear. It seems Keith Vaz etc on the parliamentary committee yesterday agree with her.

I am so pleased to read your post about the contrast between Hillsborough & Plebgate,I have been seething about this. Hilsborough over 20yrs so far not a single head has rolled. Plebgate, investigated immediatly, police bieng grilled by MPs, vast expense, moral panic about can the police be trusted. Hillsborough, people died & and whole city had it’s reputation smeared. Plebgate 1 man lost part of his job, but kept his main one with it’s pay & substantial perks & will probably get another promotion soon. The whole issue hinging on the exact words of his obnoxious tirade.
