(not satire – it’s Cameron and co!)
There’s nothing wrong with expecting long-term unemployed people to get a job – provided they’re fit enough to work.
But it must be a real job with real wages.
Workfare on the other hand is just the state paying the (very meagre) wages of people who are being forced to work for big companies like McDonald’s for free.
McDonald’s does very well out of it for sure but both the taxpayer and the unemployed lose out in a big way.
And workfare actually increases unemployment because let’s face it, why on earth would companies pay more wages to employ more people when they can get staff for free courtesy of the taxpayer?
So why do Cameron and co like workfare so much?
Could it be because it’s actually a modern form of fagging:
FAGGING | WORKFARE |
A system where pupils in private schools at the bottom of the hierarchy are expected to undertake demeaning work on behalf of the pupils at the top of the hierarchy | A system where people in private companies at the bottom of the hierarchy are expected to undertake demeaning work on behalf of the people at the top of the hierarchy |
Maybe that’s why so many in the coalition cabinet love workfare so much.
Workfare probably just makes all those old Etonians or would-have-loved-to-have-been Etonians in Cameron’s cabinet feel nostalgic for their school days.
Or maybe it’s just revenge on the rest of us for all the demeaning fagging they themselves had to do all those years ago?

Interestingly, what do you do when you’ve finished with a fag? Stub it out and throw it away ….

Well observed! Fagging is also a form of bullying, which is the tone and substance of so much of this government’s “reform”. Perhaps the Labour Party should undertake to make fagging illegal in the British educational system if they get in in 2015, then we might eventually get a better type of politician coming forward.

Fagging often involved physical and sexual abuse. As I happen to be on the Work Programme at the moment I’m kind of hoping that the same won’t be true about workfare if I end up sentenced to it!
