(not satire – it’s the Daily Mail!)

Oh come on now, don’t look so shocked.

We all know Lord Rothermere – the original owner of the Daily Mail – was a big fan of Hitler. Not just Hitler’s fan – his friend in fact:

But that’s all usually explained away these days as a mistake on Rothermere’s part because at the time he didn’t realise how anti-semitic Hitler was.

Which is strange really considering how anti-semitism was something both Hitler and Rothermere had very much in common.

Because the Daily Mail was not only a supporter of Hitler – in the 1930s it was also openly and rabidly anti-Jewish.

A little-known fact is that the Daily Mail serialised the anti-semitic forgery ‘The Protocols of the Elders of Zion‘ – a good ten years or so after it had been revealed to be a forgery.

And here’s an article showing what the Mail thought about Jews just one year before Britain was at war with Germany:

But, hey …. that was all a long time ago. The present Lord Rothermere and Daily Mail owner probably doesn’t mind Jews half as much as his predecessors did.

So why did Lord Rothermere’s newspaper support another far-right anti-Jewish party – the Front National in last year’s French elections?

Did the present Lord Rothermere – like his predecessor – really not realise how anti-semitic they were?

Perhaps now you can see why old cynics like me are putting two and two together and starting to think that maybe the Mail’s obsession with attacking Ed Miliband so strongly is not just because he’s leader of the Labour Party – but because his father was one of those Jews “pouring into the country”.

Or to misquote Oscar Wilde: To support one anti-Jewish party may be regarded as a misfortune; to support two looks like – collaboration?

Go ahead and comment. You know you want to.
