Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather has stunned her party colleagues by vowing to continue collecting her MP salary of £66,396 pa for the next two years in protest against her own party’s immigration and welfare policies.
The ex-minister – who became the youngest MP when she secured a stunning by-election victory over Labour in Brent East almost exactly a decade ago – said her relationship with her party was so broken that she had no choice but to continue being a member of it.
A spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats said it was “disappointed” by her decision:
Of course we’re disappointed by Sarah’s decision. We were hoping we’d be shot of her much sooner. We can’t believe we’ll have to put up with her bad jokes for another two years.
