(not satire – it’s the UK today!)
According to a recent report by highly respected international doctors’ organisation Medecins Du Monde – Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt’s much touted problem of so-called health tourism in the UK is a myth.
Here’s the organisation’s report in which they directly refer to health tourism in the UK as a myth:
The importance of equitable access to healthcare for people in England: a policy briefing
Don’t expect to see this reported in any of the UK press though – as it proves one of the UK government and tabloid newspapers’ main planks of anti-immigrant propaganda is actually a complete myth.
Or as I prefer to call it – a lie.

You mean MSN and politicians don’t tell the truth to the public……? Next you will be telling me the Royal Family don’t bring in more money in tourism than they take from taxes.

There was a report earlier in the week from Public Health England, part of the NHS, that TB was on the rise. http://www.hpa.org.uk/Publications/InfectiousDiseases/Tuberculosis/1308TBintheUK2013report/ According to this report 73% of TB cases were born outside the UK … The rate of TB among the non UK-born population was almost 20 times the rate in the UK-born… In the UK-born population, the incidence of TB has not declined in the past decade, with rates remaining stable at 4.1/100,000 per year. Within this population, those most at risk remain individuals from ethnic minority groups, those with social risk factors and the elderly.” I’m not sure what social risk factors actually means in this context.
This is a concrete example of what doctors of the world are saying. It’s not clear how many of the 6,300 TB sufferers born outside the UK are “health tourists” since there seems to be no actual research to determine the extent or even the existence of this “problem”, but even if they were all health tourists, does that mean we are going to let them die, and in the meantime wander around spreading TB, especially given that the BCG vaccination in schools ended in 2005, so anyone aged between 13 and 21 is unvaccinated.
Of course, Jeremy Hunt isn’t going to let a report by doctors of the world get in the way of a nice opportunity to find skapegoats, but he should
