Let’s remind ourselves what the Tories used to openly say about Nelson Mandela.

OK – that was a long time ago. Most people would say the modern Conservative Party has completely changed now.
Well , maybe.
Strange then that over at the Conservative Home website – a Tory supporter calling him or herself ‘Thatcher’s Stormtrooper‘ – states that members of today’s Tory youth wing ‘Conservative Future’ were still singing “Hang Nelson Mandela” as recently as 2006 after “one too many beers“.

I’ve noticed that the comment has disappeared. I also noticed that it appeared on Harry Phibbs’ blog on Conservative Home. Phibbs is also formerly a member of the FCS.

Conservative Way Forward (who face backwards) are still singing “Hang Mandela”. It’s interesting how this particular comment appeared on Harry ‘Foghorn’ Phibbs’ blog on Conservative Home. Phibbs, as you may recall, was once a member of the Federation of Conservative Students, the former rabid right youth wing of the Tory Party. Their mantle has been assumed by the Young Britons Foundation.

Having read some of the negative comments about Nelson Mandela on the DM website, I was disgusted. Nelson Mandela will surely go down as one of the worlds greatest leaders ever, right up there with Ghandi. This fact is totally lost on the racist attitude of the DM and the Tories.

The gentle Xhosa bishop of the South African diocese of our Church thinks that the cult of Mandela in South Africa verges on idolatry. The bishop was an ANC military activist who survived capture and interrogation by the apartheid security forces. He told me that his most abiding resentment was that his interrogation was in Afrikaans.
Of course, I am sure he is praying for Mandela now.
Others with knowledge of the country think it will be open season on whites when Mandela dies. There are video clips of the president dancing and singing “Kill the Boer” to great approval at an ANC rally.

Is it any worse than the open hostility and racism expressed by many in all three mainstream parties towards Palestinians or the racist neocolonialism practiced by the government in its support and implementation of wars and sanctions against countries which resist corporate piracy by US and EU based multinationals? Or for that matter the figurative dancing on the graves of the revolutionary leaders Chavez and Gaddafi?

Mandela is quite literally our Messiah. My family ain’t like them middle-class whites that could bugger off & emigrate the moment things got tricky. If it wasn’t for Madiba, then me, my family, and several hundred thousand of other South Africans would right now be pushing up daisies. We, literally, owe him everything.

Freedom starts with Truth. When Apartheid crumbled, there was no hiding the wrongs of that system from black South Africans and the process of contrition healing could commence – producing what they have today, a Rainbow nation. It is still not perfect – but look how far they have come. Blacks in the UK however, have never actively been told the truth, nor been apologised to for their forefathers enduring 400 years of European slavery and racial suppression – therefore their healing will likely take forever and their true freedom even longer!
