Just what is it about political satire that seems to get up the nose of those in positions of power?
Yesterday Facebook suddenly decided to flag this blog as spam – effectively censoring it by scaring away anyone who might want to link to it or share it on Facebook.
That was obviously a surprise but I was even more surprised when a member of staff from JobCentre Plus openly boasted to me that it was she who had reported the blog to Facebook as spam after she got annoyed by this particular satirical blogpost critical of ATOS and the DWP:

It’s obvious even from the headline that the article is pure satire – not spam – but it seems Facebook automatically took the word of a member of staff from JobCentre Plus and dutifully flagged it – and indeed this whole site – as one that should be avoided.
What is it about satire they don’t like so much? Is it the fact that it not only criticises those in power but makes fun of them too? Or is it that Facebook can’t stand the fact I do it for free – so making a nonsense of any future business model they may have which charges for content?
Last year I had to fight with 3UK to stop them flagging this site as porn (believe it or not) and now I’ve got bloody Facebook treating it as spam just because someone from a government organisation doesn’t like to be criticised.
Censoring political satire is a very dangerous game for Facebook to be playing and – even if it turns out to have been a mistake – automatically blocking links to websites on the word of someone working in a government department is a real threat to freedom of expression and speech.
Satire is a very old and time-honoured method of criticising those in positions of power and we allow powerful organisations like Facebook to casually block access to it at our peril.
SECOND UPDATE – today I’ve been getting reports that other websites which have been critical of DWP, ATOS and JobCentre Plus are also being flagged as spam by Facebook too. Strange.
Someone has kindly set up a Facebook page to try to persuade Facebook to delist this site as spam – hoping that if enough people complain to Facebook they’ll change their mind.

I’ve bookmarked all the good links to popular sites such as here, Black Triangle, DPAC among many others. I have two tabs open on my browser. One is Facebook and the other is a general tab that I go to rather than clicking on something inside of facebook. Yes, it’s more long winded to get to a relevant news item, plus also, it’s one facebook can’t mark as spam. However, I’ve also realised that it’s probably just as well to click a link in facebook and hit ‘not spam’ as I’m sure every hit counts.
On the upside, it keeps tories away…

Hi Tom this has been happening to other blogs as well over the last few days. My TGirl blog on WordPress has been marked as spam as well as have those of a couple of friends despite not having anything to do with the DWP. Facebook really sucks at times.

This may not actually be Facebook’s fault, if they get enough negativity and “This is spam” on one article then the system will automatically shut the person down. It’s a system problem and one that works 95% of the time, just this time someone is targeting the blog personally.
Now I’ve heard the argument that there should be administrators and moderators scanning the logs for banned articles and such, but realistically think about it. Say that there is an easy admin page for reviewing such actions that the system takes for general spam and clean-up. Now view every single user on this system. Say just 10% are spam bots and the like. How many moderators would it take to clean the site. And where would the money come from?
When the system works 95% of the time and it is probably written into the terms and conditions that they can do this via automation, it is more likely the systems fault rather then Facebook’s personal.
On saying that, there is nothing stopping the politicians noting the blog as spam, as well as them paying a service to do this for them. Such services exist and it isn’t that difficult to get a fake account when most people have their pets up on Facebook.
So either someone is out to get them, doesn’t find them interesting, or Facebook really doesn’t like them…
Take your pick.
(EDIT: I have been posting this around a lot on Facebook today, slightly edited to match the subject but this time I can not be bothered sorry.)

NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE i think it was said. also she seems to have not wanted to name Atos instead just referred to them as ‘a disability assessor”..now i dont know why she did that..scared of being fired or legal bollocks idk..but having an employee harassed is bang out of order ..well to me it is..

No I wouldn’t be on Labours case morning etc because I’m not tribal in terms of politics and don’t believe either the left or the right have all the answers. In reality there are no easy solutions to the countries problems. Also where did I say I was in favour of political censorship, I didn’t. My post was a plea for posters to avoid personal abuse and I’m surprised it was regarded as bollocks. It’s a shame that a lot of posters here are so intolerant of any view which is not left wing.

One always has the right to respond, of course, but it can be done politely if you disagree – even if the other person was rude first. But a lot of the time, we are seeing decent comments shot down with a kneejerk reaction.
I understand you (and others) are passionate, but it helps to keep a cool head when disagreeing with people – if only to make yourself look better 🙂

It would be far better if everyone was civilised to each other and avoided phrases such as left wing loony and right wing wanker etc and worse. No doubt people are ruder on the Internet than in face to face conversation due to the distant, anonymous nature of blog dialogue.

Ok, you have a point there. Be as rude to those people, as is justified.
But if it’s just somebody who disagrees with some views on a policy/post/whatever, if they aren’t being rude, then tone it down – else you become as bad as the ones who are rude (call you lefty scum etc.)
It’s not just specific to you, of course. Don’t get me wrong. Others do it too, on both sides of an argument. I just agree with Clive’s original point – it’s a shame it happens.

This isn’t a DWP conspiracy. All that has happened here is some facebook users have flagged this blog as spam. Facebook has been asking if all wordpress links are spam, not just this one. Please don’t jump so easily to conclusions/be trolled so easily. It’s embarrassing for everyone involved.

ATOS is not a UK company but a French company based in Bezons, France. — What makes our government think ATOS should have the IT contract for the London Olympics and the Healthcare Assessment contract for disabled clients when for example the goverment’s own statistics say that 1,300 people have died shortly after being declared “fit for work” by ATOS doctors. Thus, although this is by no means a laughing matter, Tom’s satire is both relevant and entirely justified.

You’ve missed a story, curiously ignored by DWP. Concerning the one we can’t deport from this country.A Big Kat. when the police arrested him from his home he was carrying a wad of money I mean thousands of pounds. When they searched his place they found many more thousands of pounds. He gets benefits and has never worked in this country. So where did the money come from? Or maybe all the recent cuts failed to reach down his street? Since he doesn’t seem to be looking for work much, why are his benefits not sanctioned. But mostly I wonder how he has wads of money littering his home? Anyone else would be charged with benefit fraud.

it is disgusting what FB have done!!!!!!!!! They leave all sorts on FB Eg photos of dogs almost dead after bad treatment, photos of people being tortured, photos which could almost be classed as porn, photos of the way animals are raised for food…….. yet they delete WORDS!!!!!!!!!! SHAME ON THEM!

Did you get this woman’s name? Civil Servants,of any grade,who are are on duty, but also during the rest of the time are not supposed to make comments, or take public actions which can be construed as political by members of the public.There are a number of restrictions on the types of political activity in which civil servants can engage. This DWP staff member’s comments is indicative of a bias that may be offensive to you. Her behaviour may have bought the DWP into disrepute.

The lady did not boast about reporting the link, nor did she ever admit to it. She pointed out it was marked as spam, and agreed that it should be.
She says “should be marked as spam and quite right too” in a bid to insult the piece – it is not an admission to marking it as such.
Nowhere in this conversation has this lady admitted she marked it – Tom stated that, and she immediately corrected him.
Even if she HAD done this, the issue lay entirely with Facebook as I’ve said earlier, and affected many blogs. But she didn’t even do it.
Tom is a liar, and he has known from the start that he was making all of this up. If you reply to me with yet another defence after seeing this deplorable behaviour, then you really need to reassess who you trust online.

(1) claiming that the disability detector was ludicrous (twas a joke) is not as ludicrous as the actual WCA test which has resulted in wrongful assessments of thousands upon thousands some of which are dead now.
(2) why on earth did she not name ATOS but instead referred to a ‘disability assessor? loyalty to the company or afraid of sacking??
(3) ATOS is known to have ppl in place who hunt down critiscism of itself..often with dire consequences..ag After Atos site which was brough down and had a cease and desist order served on it.

My angle is the truth. Even if I were a “stooge”, I haven’t made anything up and everything I’ve shown you has been real.
So even IF I were a stooge, it doesn’t change my argument one bit. Stooge or not, I’m still in the right. But I’m not a stooge – and even if I were – I’d have bigger fish to fry than this blog, surely? It’s not exactly bringing down the system, is it?

I feel that I’m on your side completely here Tom. I have been deemed as spam many time. Apparently it’s hard to believe I’ve invented a pill that grows the penis by four inches, gives a raging erection and summons girls to your home from your local area who want sex now.
Now I can see why my own marvelous product has been confused with fallacious products by association of function but I’m at a complete loss as to why your blog should be deemed as spam. If I was a mentally deranged individual with a sniper rifle under my bed I would be screaming “government conspiracy” but of course I’m not, it’s an assault rifle. -wink-

Haha! I like it. It’s been corrected though. It was just something about facebook making the filter too strong recently after attempts to spam from some hackers.
